Collingwood
As a lover of this game like all of us are I would like to watch a game where the commentators do exactly that...commentate.
The bias against our club by commentators is getting really tiresome. It's unprofessional.
Can the AFL please set some standards so that I can watch my team play without having to listen to commentators blatantly support the opposition.
I want to hear the game being called. I don't want to feel like I am sitting in the middle of the opposition cheer squad.

Collingwood haters keep on hating. Wish they had an option on Fox Sports where you could just watch the game with the ambient sound. Honestly don't understand why we even need commentators to tell us what's going on in the game, I think we can fill in the blanks...

The issue goes all the way back to Ron Casey and the early days of football commentary/broadcasting

Casey employed what would otherwise be, out of work, ex-footballers
None of them were ever the sharpest tools in the shed and he only employed them because they were cheap and they were generally household names, but they couldn't commentate/call for shytte.
The "tradition" continues all the way up until today, just take a look at callers like BT, Russell, Dunstall, Brereton and compare them to the Professionals (Peter Donegan for example).

The other huge issue is that ex-footballers come with their playing days biases and most of them hated Collingwood which continues today in their calling/commentating

The final issue is that it appears that TV stations have no quality control or game day review system to fix obvious errors or failings
Every week we get callers making the the exact same mistake they made the week before....and nothing is done to fix it

It’s what makes us strong and the biggest club in the land

I don't care if they are Collingwood haters. Actually I love the fact that we are despised. But if you are commenting on a game then you have to do it professionally.
I don't ever recall listening to someone like Dennis Cometti and thinking "wow how biased is this guy".
I don't even know who he supported (I imagine it was one of the WA teams) and that's how it should be.

Hear, hear Otto! It drives me nuts as well. There are far too many ex-footballers commentating instead of professional, media trained commentators (whatever that may mean) providing a quality broadcast. Ch7 and Fox pretty much do whatever they like because it is a closed market and viewers have no choice. Consumer/customer has no voice and there is no backlash in terms of lost ratings, that’s the only thing that would make them lift their game.

Two pearlers (amongst many) last night were calling Maynard incorrectly as Crisp and my personal favourite, the old trope of “Collingwood rarely travels and plays most games at the MCG”. Let’s not get started on what gets said on free kicks either, we’ll be here all day.

I forget the game but it was a few weeks ago. We were down by 6 plus goals. Dwayne Russell was going on about how "Nathan Buckley hadn't won a premiership as a player and now it looks like he won't win one as a coach" He continued.....

He was absolutely tarnishing his name, during a match, during play when it had absolutely no relevance to what was going on. Yeah we were getting pumped but he couldn't help himself hang Buckley out to dry. I don't normally use this word to describe someone, but it came across incredibly cruel.

I knew he was always a numpty but he took it way too far in this case. The TV is now on mute when he commentates.

Snap! You’ve precisely summed up the issue.

There was one bit of play in the second qtr I think where Dunstall said something along the lines of "unfortunately" such and such a player did this or that.
He was blatantly saying that Adelaide could have got a goal but "unfortunately" something went wrong and it didn't work out.

“It’s very unfortunate Adelaide we’re not able to stop all of Collingwood’s 17 goals”

I usually like Fox (King, Reidwolt, Eddie) but then the anti-Pies brigade (Hudson, Dunstall etc) are a pain.

Dunstall is arguably the worst of the lot. Every game he focuses on our opposition and groans when they mess up play, and he jumps out of his seat to question frees that go our way - look no further than Howe’s yesterday compared to the reaction they gave for Fogarty’s dive just before HT.

Round 23 last year when we needed to beat Freo to make top 4 he was flat out cheering against us for the entire game.

Fogarty should be getting a fine this week for that dive

"Ahhhh NO! he's turned it over to Collingwood - SIGH. Collingwood will get an undeserved goal here" - Jason Dunstall

Should get that printed and framed and put in the sports museum at the G

There was a game a few years ago where Jessie White almost had his head taken off by an opposition player when he was bending over to pick up the ball and Dunstall went on and on about how it shouldn't have been a free kick. The guy almost got decapitated and according to Dunstall it was ok.
As supporters we shouldn't have to put up with this level of bias.

Yes I remember, it was against Gold Coast in 2015 - I think he was sliding down to take a mark on the lead and he wanted contact below the knees against him :$. What he did was actually perfectly allowed, the rules even explicitly say you can't give away contact below the knees when you're trying to mark or smother. But it didn't stop him going on about it for the next 10 minutes.

If you want another laugh, check out the last ten minutes against Carlton this year - he and Nick Riewoldt spend the whole time trying to pick out frees and moaning every time Carlton turn it over. Then at the end: "oh, Collingwood managed to win".

I'm glad you made this thread, this year in particular has been a joke.

Funny think they winge about Ed doing the Exact Opposite

Another example of bias on the Sunday footy show, idiot Cornes drops Pendlebury from his AA team on the back of his 34 disposals yesterday. Apparently others are “more damaging” never mind Pendlebury was arguably best on ground.

The 2 mids who came in were Yeo (26 disposals last week) and Shuey (29 last week). Yeo was named bog and Shuey got the coaches votes, but I take issue with Pendlebury being not being damaging enough.

Yeah that is true, but Eddie is not a very good caller either, he makes just as many mistakes as the others and he always calls in worn out footy cliche's
A pet peeve I have is, I've never heard Ed say any thing other than "he runs into the open goal" when someone kicks a goal, I always wondered if he has ever said "he runs into a closed goal", not that its a huge issue, its just symptomatic of the dearth of professional callers

On my way to Drums hotel to watch the game was listening to the Carlton game and one of the callers mistook Silvagni for Kruezer.

Fortunately, I didn't hear the game as sound was low and rather enjoyed the telecast.

I have been listening to the cricket on ABC at night and it is so good. You know where every fielder is, the type of ball bowled and no bias from either English or Australian commentators. There are even gaps of silence as the bowler bowls. No need to fill in silence with rubbish stats.

I have actually found that I have almost perfected the zoning out the commentators watching at home.

Kane Cornes is a Total Flog.

Think it was 2002 when he Gave us the Middle Finger after a Close Win for them

Years ago there was a Footy caller on the ABC (can't think of his name) who only called the actual play, for instance he would say it like: "Pendlebury in the middle, handballs to Treloar on the edge of the square, who short passes to Mihocek on the 50 who will take a set shot at goal"
No theatrics, no screaming, no weird names for footballers. He was so good to listen to
