Getting your girlfriend to lose weight?

Portion control is a big thing and before my girlfriend learnt about calories and counting she used to eat a similar sized meal to me. Girls need 1200 calories a day, men need 1800. 300 calories per meal plus snacks and men can beef up meals or add extra snacks.

This is the big one!!!

Anyone suggesting leaving her over the weight issue clearly as no idea.

Your fighting an uphill battle if the parents and family are overweight, genetics plays a huge role in weight gain and retention. She's always going to be big, but doesn't have to be obese.

Lead by example, set the bar high for yourself and it will have a positive impact on her, she might not hit your standards but will improve her own.

I'd recommend the following

1. Work out regularly and don't allot her to break your plans. If you guys are mean't to be she wants to spend time with you and if that means going for a long walk with you Sunday morning she will do it.

2. Cook dinners in the house, you can at least control the food she eats there.

3. Make it clear that all unhealthy food in the fridge is hers, never touch it yourself.

4. Order healthy food while out and opt for salad as a side. When the waiter goes to give her meal with the salad on the side and she has to point to the meal with fries, she will think twice.

5. Don't harass her about her weight, but bring it up when she raises her personal grievences with you

There is hope!

Kinda touched on this in a thread elsewhere but i'll post again here as it's relevant.

My wife isn't fat and i have no problem with the way she looks, she's a size 14. Anyways, it's basically the same situation as the OP. When clothes shopping it's a roller coaster of emotions. When we met she was a size 10 and she's slowly (6 years) progressed to a size 14. We're not gym people and we eat a bit of everything but one day she just snapped, admitted she wasn't happy with herself, didn't like any of her clothes and wanted to drop 10kg. I told her if that's what she wanted then i'd help her a long.

The first thing we done was throw out EVERYTHING in the fridge and cupboards. Most of it was just shit anyway, so it was good to have a clean out. Then we went shopping and re-filled the place with healthier foods, fruit, veg, tea's, healthy snacks etc. We bought a juicer, a glass of homemade juice is good to replace a meal. We cut out bread and most wheat and have decided to eat mostly gluten free. The meal portions have also dropped in size and this is what has hit me the hardest and i have been eating secretly in between meals to fill the void.

Another good rule is no food after 7pm, I don't bide by this but my wife does and she says she has been sleeping better because of it. We used to sit and eat chocolate, lollies or chips every night until bed, which was a really bad habit.

I do a lot of walking at work so i tend to avoid most exercise, i crave my couch at the end of the day. The wife walks the dog in the morning before work, she's been getting up early and doing a couple laps of the lake and has even started jogging, which is a credit to her.

She's dropped 4kg's since we've been doing this (around 2 months) and i actually feel healthier too despite my secret eating.

My tip would be to reduce the bad food in the house, but never throw out everything that is bad. You will lapse and you need to have food in the house that will satisfy the cravings otherwise you'll end up at McDonald's buying a large sundae with a flake and double topping.

I keep redskins, individually wrapped dark milk chocolates, and lemon slice at hand. I love something sweet after dinner and either a redskin or two or a single chocolate piece hit the spot. Then I have a green tea, piece of lemon slice, and half an apple for dessert.

Very impressed by this. Some people simply have no idea how to lose weight- at least you guys know what healthy eating is. Personally, I cut bread and pastas out from my diet and have shredded the flab. I wasn't over-weight, but you notice how bloated you are when you eat bread and pasta every day.

Are you suggesting you can't lose weight eating bread and pasta?

Losing weight is calories in vs calories out.

My guess is the theory of Bread & Pasta making it harder to lose weight is the fact that both a higher in sodium then most other foods, thus causing fluid retention/bloating.

Prob the best ways is to do what Thistle's said but take it futher and plan your meals for both of you lean meats and vegies etc.Cut out surgar drinks and sweets do it together whats good for the goose is good for the gander if you want her to eat/drink right you have to do it aswell.Or take it futher and throw out (or hide) all the shite food in the house.

Dude! Your looking at this the wrong way.
Size 16 is the perfect size for a woman. Size 12 is waaaay too skinny.
Its only since fashion designers started hanging their clothes on stick figures that size 8-12 has been considered to be desirable.
A woman SHOULD be curvy. Its the factory finish.

I think he's more concerned at what she will end up like, based on family history and her current situation. Not looks necessarily, but health in general.

Trolling?
Size 16 is well over weight. It's ridiculous to suggest that we have been brainwashed into thinking something else is attractive.
From the moment you are born you know whats attractive and what is not.
Size zeros and 16s are not.
Somewhere in the middle (exactly the middle) is about right.

Stating the obvious but curvy doesn't mean a bigger dress size. A size 12 girl could be really curvy and a size 16 may be built like a brick wall ... this is often the case actually.

Sounds like you ain't gonna change things and even if she moderates things, once you get married she will let it go and once she get preggers… boy you are in trouble. Seen it with a few mates although also had one go the other way after kids. I'm lucky to have a Mrs (mother of 3y and 12wk old) that is into high intensity exercise like Kickboxing/boxing (proper gym not boxercise) and running and we tend argue over getting training time rather than losing weight

Now I love this girl, have since day 1, but this is driving me nuts. I go for a walk with the dog I get "you only do it to make me feel bad".

The 'it's all about me' syndrome.

You're in trouble after kid number one, in more ways than one.

one of the issues with my girlfriend is I don't think she knows whats good or bad for you because of her mother.

I've never known any other family to eat ice cream because dinner is taking a little longer.
She always has cake here, she'll eat half of it, leave it in the lounge room and give me a dirty look when I say I don't want any.
Add to that, the laziness.

The thing is she used to be really fit, she played for Victoria in Soccer right up to 18, her whole family talks about how fit she used to be and I just can't see it because of what she's like now.

Don't keep junk food in your house. Ice-cream before dinner is an absurd habbit. Maybe you should go on a health kick and see if it rubs off on her (lead by example). Otherwise, you're facing an uphill battle. Trying to make someone lose weight when they have no interest in doing so is nigh impossible. At best they'll go along with it and behind your back eat cakes etc. If the motivation isn't coming from her then your efforts will be futile.

Lead by example :)

Has to be her 'decision'. How you go about geting her to make it is the hard part.

Just boot off to the gym yourself, see if that works.

Usually people in denile don't act well to ultermatums or straight facts. It's 'not their fault' after all so it feels wrong for them to hear it is.

A modern size 16 is vastly different to a size 16 of yesteryear.

Laziness seems to be the problem, its all about changing lifestyle. Start small, go for walks, get a dog?. Find a sport she is into?

best advice.

the OP should start hitting the gym every night, going for a run in the morning. She'll get the message when he is never at home because he is working out all the time. It will also create the perception that he is going to "upgrade" and she'll probably get off her arse.

another suggestion is a self defense course is a good one "want you to be safe". These courses are almost always high intensity after the first couple of weeks.
