I'd offer him 3-4 years at 500 with incentives to 750k but compo only takes into account the base salary so that probably only gets them band 2/3 and they probably match so there's the issue. Might need to offer over the odds to get them not to match.

Id call their bluff.. cause I'm not trading for him. He has given them an out by saying he is happy to stay ... thats leverage.

Caldwell linked to us again in FoxFooty. I watched him closely last week and he looks really handy. Quick, good over head, great kick and just tall enough.

I’d definitely be keen if we could organise something with GWS. He’d be a fine get with the latest of our 1st round selections. Given the Giants have none they would be keen.

He and Witherden would be shrewd recruiting.

I'd happily trade our R1 or WCEs for caldwell (probably not P11)..im keen on witherden but I doubt Brisbane trade him.

Firstly you can forget about Jenkins. He was brought in ultra cheap as depth and he's played a grand total of 1 game. He's not in our best 22 and not keeping anyone out of the side.

Your whole thought process comes down to your opinion that guys like Steven, Tuohy and Henderson are no better than Narkle, Clark and Esava right now. Frankly I think that's crazy. Tuohy has been excellent and he's probably played 4 or 5 games this year better than Clark has ever played. Henderson against Esava is a choice based on structure but given their respective form again I think it's crazy to think Esava is the better option right now. Jack Steven is a 4x B&F winner who's now starting to work to fitness and show that form. Again the idea that Narkle is even comparable to Steven in a final is I think madness. If you want to go for a premiership now then playing these older players is just the better choice. Playing the young guys instead would be prioritising the future over our premiership chances now.

As for Brad Crouch I find it funny that so many people who are worried about losing Constable or Narkle hate the idea of getting Crouch. He's a dominant inside midfielder. Isn't he exactly the type of player we hope those guys become? I don't really like the system but it allows you to bring in gun mature players very cheap or free. If the choice is Constable vs Crouch why the hell would you choose the guy who maybe might become a gun over the guy who already is a gun if we get him free or cheap and his wages fit our structure?
Not doubting at all that Crouch is a quality footballer.

The issue is cap though. I don't see how we can give out large contracts to secure free agents when cap is dropping. It will be slashed over the next 2-4 years and we knee cap ourselves for any other future free agents or player retention. If its a cheap contract then sure but I think things could get out of hand here real quick.

Crouch... I wouldn’t do it as mentioned previously in a long post. Main reason is he’s not different to what we have and it stifles development of younger mids whom we need to develop post selwood Duncan era. Also lacks class. Menegola/Guthrie provides what crouch would. Plus, the reason Guthrie Duncan and Menegola are having such good years is they have more mid time post TK. Crouch would disrupt this cohesion.

Caldwell... I do want. Because Caldwell, Fogarty, Parfitt and hopefully CS can rise up together, along with another R1 this year. A group to build our entire midfield around after this era. If GWS play the hard hand, they’d push Caldwell to us (rather than Essendon or saints) as we have better currency, a late R1 will do it. Essendon won’t trade their R1 and I don’t think saints have one?

Cameron... 100% yes

XOH... If we lost Constable or Narkle I’d trade the comp we get for XOH. A pretty much like for like replacement.

My ideal scenario is:

1. Sign Cameron as FA
2. Trade our last R1 for Caldwell
3. Take 11 to the draft
4. Upgrade our WC R1 with another pick (eg 16 + R3 for 10 or something.. or otherwise trade it for a 2021 R1... or at worst, just use it this year

Edit : just us linked with Viney. Highly doubt that. But would prefer over crouch

While I’d be very surprised if it happened I’d love to get Viney as a free agent. Would happily give him a long term deal. I don’t mind Crouch but Viney is a better player and doesn’t have the same injury issues.

I don't think we'd get anything for Constable and Narkle. A round 3 pick that we would wouldn't have the list spots to use maybe.

Not that they're not great players, but they're developing propositions on lists that may not be able to afford many developing propositions.

They add more value to keep but if they're getting a better deal elsewhere then we should thank them for their contribution

Our history suggests we only pay what we're willing to pay. If he doesn't want to come for that then so be it and we'll walk away just like we did with Frawley.

But the reason we can afford all the free agents and trades is because a lot of our players have accepted way less than what they could've got elsewhere. There's absolutely no doubt that Danger, Hawkins, Selwood and Taylor could've all earned at least $1M extra over their careers if they'd played elsewhere. Steven and Jenkins are having a chunk of salary paid by StKilda and Adelaide. From what I've heard we don't pay Rohan, Tuohy or Dahlhaus big bucks for clear best 22 players either.

That's what it takes to build success. Hopefully Crouch is willing to come and I'm confident we won't break the bank for him. But we'll see. Lack of opportunity is a far bigger limitation on player retention than salary cap. But then if we're bringing in top end players losing fringe guys who may or may not make it isn't really a major problem.

All 4 of those together would be around 8-900k so maybe 7% of salary cap at best.

If it's a 16% cut over the next 2 years (bringing us back to 2017 cap) we'll need more than double that gone.

I'd be banking on a bigger hit than that

If the salary cap is cut significantly everyone's wage will drop somewhat which will be the big impact. There's no way anyone remains at 100% of their prior wage if the cap drops by over 10%. Also I think those 4 would be on at least $1m (pre-covid) between them after match payments. Narkle and Constable are off their draft wages which means they'd be on ~$350k combined after match payments maybe even a bit more. And there's no way Ablett and Taylor are on less than $300k each. Overall they'd have to be >$1m combined.

If the cap drops some of our existing guys will lose money which covers some of it.

By 2023 all of Taylor Ablett Henderson Steven Jenkins will be gone and all of Tuohy Rohan Dahl will be gone or on minimum chips and Guthrie and Menegola will be on lower deals as they will be post 30. And obviously by 2024 ish the big 3 (Hawkins danger sel) will be gone or on much lower $. So we definitely have cap room to bring in a few guys particularly if we backend deals (which is why we are chasing Cameron on a 5-6 year backended deal imo).

I don't think we will take extra picks beyond the 4 we have. Any guys we trade will be for 2021 picks or appropriate player swaps.

We are the new Collingwood for the player agents on their leaks to the media.

The story is probably rubbish but Melbourne have too many inside mids and they don't have a R1. If they get round 1 compo for viney as FA they probably are willing to let him go.

Ablett, Taylor gone - maybe Constable + Narkle too?

We will lose some depth guys and replace them with draftees which saves cash and allows us cap room to bring in best 22 players which is a win for us imo.

I agree only offer what we are willing to pay no more. I'd prefer viney to crouch if it comes to it anyway.
