Only really came back because I had access to medallion club seats each game. We didn't come good until 2003. And when I say good, I mean Essendon 2024 good.

I was 14, I remember it well enough. We were stuffed by Geelong's lofty lofty standards, but we kept winning enough games each year for a reason.

No he's RFA. I think Carlton will match almost anything within reason. But you could offer him huge $ (like we did with curnow) and stretch their cap to match it and push someone else out (as they would probably need to lose a couple of mid tier guys in that scenario).

I understand if you or I think that 'say' west coast aren't watchable. Because they aren't our side.
But as I barrack for Geelong and didn't want to watch them, I'd classify that as 'truely unwatchable'.

For all the talk of it being a great draft it doesn't really feel like a Geelong draft. A tonne of guys with solid but not exceptional seasons and solid but not exceptional traits.

We've got a history of absolutely loading up in what end up being quality, deep drafts (2001 and 2016 for example) and taking limited picks in poor drafts. Bringing in a guy like Martin and getting Stanley, Duncan and Bews to all go around again suggests we don't rate the draft anywhere near as highly as some.

You can't load up with picks you don't have though. We're already due to use pick 93 (won't actually be that late after bids, passes etc. but the premise is the same). But If we don't keep those players you mention we have to replace them with pick 110 in the draft.

We might trade in from next year on draft day, but we're better off waiting to do that on the day like we did with Holmes. e.g., if we have our eye on someone at say pick 17, we might as well wait to see if they're still actually there before trading out our future first. Otherwise we're giving away a potential top 10 pick and might not even be able to get the player that we want in.

Mm, I see Caddy as a bit of a Josh Darling type. Really good footballer, but just not big enough to really straighten a team up.

Finishes of 12th, 9th and 12th and the lowest our % got was 89%.

The worst year we had, really, was 2003. For all the hope from a really competitive and exciting 2002, we had a bad bounce that year.

We still won 7 games.

My best mate is an Essendon fan. She would kill for a 'slump' like our 1999-2003.

I think it's a couple of things. The club thinks we are closer to a flag than I do and so they want to retain guys like Duncan and bews as backup depth to cover injuries (Stanley is about Conway getting Injured again and not much else).

But also they clearly want to spread the retirements over 2 years and when we get more retirements next year it gives us cash and list spots to target a better free agency pool than this year. I think it's more about that than the draft itself. But i do agree if we really really rated the draft someone like Duncan would have been pushed.

If we really rated the depth of this draft we could've got creative to take 6 ok picks. Traded out our future first for 3 picks 25-35 on draft night to have 4 picks before 50 and another couple of later picks.

But we haven't left the list spaces for that. I think we've only got space for 4 picks max once Martin comes in.

There are conflicting reports about this draft. Early on it was touted as being one of best in a decade but not so much as the year draws to a close. No doubt there will be a plethora of 200 gamers but another Daicos, Sheezel, Reid is very unlikely.

In the late '90s Geelong was an absolute basket case. It was realistically plausible that the club would either merge with Footscray, or at the very least, play its home games at the new Docklands Stadium.

Alas, I see many, many years of struggle at Tigerland. I believe it will be a long time before the yellow and black army will be emphasising that component of their theme song post-match on a regularly basis.

We’ve seen Gold Coast have ridiculous draft pick numbers and it didn’t come to anything. Teams need the right leadership among 100 other things. Who knows if Richmond can have success in the late 2020’s but it’s not happening before then.

Fortunately the back-end of this draft is stronger than most, and expect their picks to slide in a fair amount once rival father-son and academy bids are matched.

Geelong regularly accesses its local Geelong Falcons talent and rebounding defender Lachie Jaques, a Cats fan who models his game on Tom Stewart, is the best available from the region and could be available around their current first choice.

Light-bodied playmaker Xavier Ivisic is another Falcon who could appeal later in the piece.

Could the Cats draft their second Norm Goss medallist in as many years by taking a punt on Jack Henderson?

The 25-year-old midfielder-forward had 23 disposals and kicked two goals in a best-on-ground display in the VFL grand final, receiving his medal from former teammate Mannagh.
