There was also a third option to this trade situation that has hardly been spoken about.


West Coast was offering their FF on draft night for our pick… we eventually went with the Dons trade and took COS + Mannagh.

If we took the West Coast deal we’d hold #3 now and be able to draft a Jagga Smith, FOS or Lalor.

So there was a few sliding door moments.

Option 1 - COS + Mannagh

Option 2 - Caddy (if we preferred him.. unsure)

Option 3 - trade with WC last year and hold #3 this draft Lalor/FOS/Smith/Draper.

Option 4 - If we took option 3 then we could have possibly done a similar trade that Carlton did with WC and snagged #12 + #14 for #3

No Caddy might bite us.
No FOS, Smith, Draper might bite us.

In the end we just gotta hope COS becomes a very good long term key position player for us… Mannagh looks a lock to have a good 4 or 5 years in him.

Funny I was thinking about Warner earlier. How he was taken late yet has emerged as one of the best mids in the game.

Wonder whether he’s a one off or there’s potential in some other WA lads that is perhaps more untapped than say the Vic boys?

At the stage we will be picking in the draft I’m quite keen on a raft of WA kids. Gerreyn, Artemis, Boxshall, Urquhart and Hayes.

Personally I don't see why WC would have traded the future pick, which #3 was probably the worst case scenario for them - would have been predicted to be #1 at that stage, for pick 10. They would have wanted something else to do it.

Oh we know it for sure.

Neale and Humphries were both underrated in their Draft classes and look at them now.
Neale was taken as the replacement pick on our matched bid on Errol Gulden (which while Errol would have been amazing, he doesn't fill a position of need like Neale does)
Humphries was taken at the absolutely dregs of the latest draft and yet if had played a full season would have been close to winning Rising Star. He looks like an elite half back for the next decade and Neale is our heir apparent Tomahawk replacement for the next decade.

In the past guys like Mitch Duncan and Harry Taylor both should have gone much earlier but fell into the late 20's and Pick 17.

Good clubs can find talent anywhere in the Draft.

There's a reason WC were offering their future first. I'm fine with not doing that deal.

People get excited by the draft number but the top 11 last year were extremely highly rated. Much more so than the top end this year which is fairly weak. It's the depth of this draft that's impressive not the top end quality. If O'Sullivan was in this year's draft his name would likely be among the group being floated as a potential pick 1.

Time will tell whether we got it right choosing O'Sullivan over Caddy. But I wouldn't be desperate to give up the choice of those two for one of Smith, FOS, Tauru, etc.

Personally I don't see why WC would have traded the future pick, which #3 was probably the worst case scenario for them - would have been predicted to be #1 at that stage, for pick 10. They would have wanted something else to do it.

No they wanted Caddy who is great mates with Reid and a very likely talent.

Nothing official about what the exact dea offered was but I’m assuming it was nothing coming back to them.

Dons also wanted Caddy. WC had to put in a strong offer to be a chance.

Is WA media WA centric? Media talk about who ever they seel their product to. For year the Hsun ..knew..tel seel papers they put a Pies player on the back page.

This year the draft seems Vic strong which probably means Wells and Geelong look in SA and WA… as he /we tend to be a bit contrarian. so we probably look at Gerryn if he there at out pick…

I'd be genuinely interested to know where the current crop would've gone last year. My guess is not that high.

We got mannagh who will either play 100 games for us or be traded for a good pick this year.

Caddy is good but I'm not sure structurally him and Henry would have worked together so I'm happy enough with that.
I'm more concerned that we have no ruck solution and no full sized kpf/r2 except neald (caddy can't ruck) and no real depth kpd coming through (which is why COS matters). De koning and neale become very important signatures this year for that reason.

Sanders is a deadset gun. There's probably no one at his level right now in this pool except jagga.

I'm not sure wce would have traded their fr1 for 10 straight up-i assume they would have wanted other pick(s) back from us.

I'm more concerned that we have no ruck solution and no full sized kpf/r2 except neald (caddy can't ruck) and no real depth kpd coming through (which is why COS matters). De koning and neale become very important signatures this year for that reason.

I'm not sure you can really say we have no depth KPD coming through, and then say "which is why COS matters" - He is the depth KPD coming through, while a combination of SDK, Kolo, JHenry, & Blicavs hold down the fort.

It's the AFL, we're not playing a video-game on ultimate team. If the aforementioned options all go down with injury, we're screwed regardless. There isn't an 18 year old or state league draftee who is going to change that.

No club has genuine AFL standard plug and play KPD just laying around in their state league side. Some clubs don't even have them in their senior side.

It's why they're in such high demand, and spuds like Ratugolea or middle of the road players like McKay get paid a fortune.

You're either going to have a highly touted youngster like COS who's not quite ready, or someone like Jeka who you'd ideally never let near the best 22.

Agree on the key forward depth though. With Neale now best 22 and no Hawkins or Foster, we're going to need somebody developing at VFL level to straighten up the list, so that'll be a point of order next week I'd assume.

I think the commentary that the top end is weak is wrong. It’s even but not weak. I rate COS super highly but I would trade him for Jagga in a heartbeat. Jagga severely underrated in my opinion and will be a future captain. Very similar player to Butters just less skilful but makes up for it by finding a lot more footy.

Also, Jhye Clark will come good. Everyone worrying shouldn’t. He basically missed the first year so he has been off the pace but what he does right he does really well. Just needs to pull it all together which I think during this next season he will.

I meant he matters in the sense that he has to be the long term replacement for kolo (who probably has 2-3 years left) but also has to be ready now if needed because otherwise if Henry or de koning are injured (or if de koning has to end up as 1st ruck) then we will be exposed. But I do agree with you that it's hard to get talls and so your depth is usually a kid who isn't ready or a D grade depth type.

Yeah the vfl forward line next year will be interesting that's for sure. I worry that neale will get a lot of afl games simply by default because we have no other option-I hope he doesn't get complacent and is still driven.

I don't know if we really need him either personally, or at least that his type shouldn't be the priority.

Zuthrie, Stewart, Humphries, Bews, Duncan, Mullin, MOC, and now potentially Burke and/or Martin.

Could even argue someone like Atkins or Cuthrie, who may need to be shifted back, or at least that they could do it in a pinch.

That's a lot of players in the general defender category, and it's one of the easiest positions to find and develop too. We've got a good history of that, as do most clubs.

Clarke excites me more out of the two with his potential in other roles if we are to go down that route, but now that he's bolting that may be a pipedream.

Admittedly, at our late picks you should probably just take whoever actually looks like they can make the grade rather than prioritising needs, so if the club believe that's Jaques then fair enough.

I'd be prioritising a key forward though, with us having quite literally nothing developing at VFL level now with Neale being best 22, and Foster delisted.

Wouldn't mind a mid either, preferably one who's above 183cm, but understand that we're likely looking at a Constable/Jansen type at our pick if we are to take that path.

Caddy would be great but I'm happy woth the way things turned out. Not trading with West Coast allowed us to better ream the Bulldogs.
