The system is fine just the values are crazy.

You'll know the values are right when clubs are only willing to do trades pretty close to what the value says and not give up twice as many points in late picks for one earlier pick.

They are changing the DVI points next year I believe (should of happened years ago).

In saying that... other clubs not making certain teams pay top value for players hasn't helped.

So some teams get a player bid on for later than they probably would go in an open draft + they can get the player with a bunch of later picks in the 40s ++ they also get a 20% discount on top of that... Bargain!

I think we'll end up with at least 3. KMF, Hofmann and Polkinghorne all look to have attributes that suit the modern game. Retschko is a good size and a machine runner already. Comes down to development when considering Pike, Molier, Ivisic and Burke, for mine. The others are much more 'ready-made', in a sense.

As you say though, Smith for 17 is absurd, and means everything else is just icing from the draft.

It just means that at least one of the picks you match the bid with have to come within the next 18 picks. i.e., if Brisbane match an Ashcroft bid at pick 5 (~1800 points), they would have had to use their original pick 18 (~1000 points) and then also make up the difference with later selections. In combination with lowering the points value of later picks, which they're bringing in next year, I think this could be a pretty viable solution.

The exception being 2016 when we took Stewart, J.Henry, Parfitt and Z.Guthrie. It's probably unlikely that we buck that trend, especially in a year where we had a very poor draft hand.

That's already 20 in 9 drafts.

There's also guys like Clark, Conway, Mullin and O'Sullivan who would be better than 50% chance to make it. Then Edwards, Knevitt, Clohesy, Stevens and Wiltshire as outside chances. So we'll probably be looking at over 2.5 per draft once everyone's finished their careers.

That's pretty close to the mark Footy Smarts, so well done there for following those names through but when you think about it, it had to be that way for us to still be a top side. Midfield class is probably still a concern albeit bringing Smith in should help. Still feel that unless Clark, Bruhn and Knevitt really go to another level then we will need to continue to add in this area. Particularly with Dangerfield in his last couple of years.

Not a concern for mine. They're a dime a dozen and can easily be picked off when needed at trade/FA time.
It'll take care of itself in time.

Now that the draft/trade period is done and dusted, where do we see our immediate list deficiencies?

We seemed to have addressed our lack of ruck depth with Mollier and Pike.

Midfield class is probably still a concern albeit bringing Smith in should help. Still feel that unless Clark, Bruhn and Knevitt really go to another level then we will need to continue to add in this area. Particularly with Dangerfield in his last couple of years.

Another key forward is probably needed if you don’t think Edwards or Mollier will play that role. Polkinghorne looks a good addition and may work with Henry and Neale. We’ll see. He looks to have a frame that can add size quickly so might get games earlier than expected.

Feel like Bruhn is almost there. Maybe not 2025, but soon. Knevitt I’m worried about.

I actually think should he have an injury free preseason next season we see him go up a gear.
If he does that, at worst he becomes a key midfielder for us and an important rotation in the middle that significantly contributes (think Cam Guthrie as Bruhn this year is tracking very closely to Cam at the same age), and at best he has a Holmes like season in a position we desperately need it.

At Deakin yesterday, the only player in training who was working separately (while I was there) was Bruhn.

Running the boundary with two staffers as pacers.

Just a glimpse, but it seems the club is working on his major deficiency.

I feel more than anything he became a victim of changing times in the AFL. Modern game is more about impact and distance gained per possession, where someone like parfitt brings very little to the table in that sort of environment.

Agree that Brendan Parfitt should have gone on a been an excellent AFL player, I was a 'big fan' but he brought it on himself with his disposal deficiency both by hand and foot. Just never improved in that area, in fact he got worse which shouldn't have happened as most players in time improve in that area. But with Brendan that was his major weakness from the get go, yet not only didn't he improve but he got worse with some of his disappointing turnovers in 2024 were so, so poor and would make you pull your hair out, even in the ressies.

In conclusion, I seen Brendan Parfitt as a Sam Mitchell type of player which initially was quite exciting with being ultra tough at ball and in tight and also elusive but unfortunately Brendan lacked Sam's polish and skills by a 'large degree' when it came to finishing off his work by hand and foot.

Good point GC26 , his greatest strength became his greatest weakness eventually.
The zip n zag became a liability when he used it too much and ignored the first option - he would get into trouble and I dare say became unpredictable to his teammates which destroyed flow to our game.
Zip n Zag might have worked as a junior or even when he first started but the game has become far more defensive and pressurised now , you need to sum things up so much quicker now and take the best option quickly.
