Kg and Cornes (senior) have a Saturday morning show here in Adelaide and I just caught the back end of a caller, a local who said that the cats had done it again and picked up up a steal in the draft, I think it was about Polkinghorne. Said the kid was a gun but had experienced an interrupted previous few years.

He looks athletic as hell and as you said, had gone through some injuries which affected his Draft stock.

According to SA talent scouts had he not missed soo much time with injury he most likely would have been a genuine first rounder.

I'm surprised how good he looks defensively. More the Guthrie or even Kolo mould than a Jordan Clark type.

Aerially that is really strong, good rebound, propped up by talls that are all solid at moving the ball by their position.
Still vulnerable to smalls and the lead up kick(but so is everyone who doesn't play with the flood). Like always up the ground pressure is paramount

By DVI, our draft spend this year was our the 2nd weakest in the last 17 years. Or the 6th percentile compared to everyone else in that time.

If we get 1 b22 player out of this draft i will call it a win.

Having b smith b22 with pick 17 is already a win from the draft

Once they took Patrick said they had no list spot. What they should have done was taken Hoffman with that pick instead, concluded the draft and tried to get said as a rookie.

What year was our weakest by DVI?

2015 because we traded out our 1st 2 picks for danger and our 3rd for Smith plus futures for henderson. Had one awesome late pick in menegola and some other dross (although buzza has been OK at state level, Gardner is somehow on a list still and hayball is doing well at college football).

I know there's always chat around the academy and F&S bidding process - coming up shortly will be the first fully national AFLW draft and this is the rules they've implemented for their academy and F&D bidding process

Is this something that would work in the AFL?

"Under AFLW rules, a side must have a pick within 18 selections of where a bid is placed to match it and gain access to their Academy and/or father-daughter product."

It would stop teams having a series of picks in the 30s & 40s to match bids they know will come in the top 5 or 10 selections

What if it's that they have to use pick that within the 18 selection limit and any required subsequent picks to match the points?

So if bid on at pick 1, they have to use at least one pick within the first 19 picks of the draft to match?

Yeah should be within 10 places. The gap in talent in a draft between Pick 1 and Pick 19 can be a gulf.

IMO, 10 Places of the bid is enough to keep teams honest without going overboard to de-incentivise it.

So if Levi Ashcroft was bid on at Pick 5 like he was, Lions would have had to come up with a Pick from Pick 6-15 to satisfy the bid match.

I think the idea behind the bid matching points system is right. I just think that the pricing is too low.

The system is fine just the values are crazy.

You'll know the values are right when clubs are only willing to do trades pretty close to what the value says and not give up twice as many points in late picks for one earlier pick.

Brisbane would have used their first to move up and not down in the first place to make it happen.

If you need to trade future picks to get it done then so be it, that's the price of moving up to get a top talent as a team who finished as Premiers.

It has no basis in any trade standing outside Father/Son picks currently.

And I think that's where the AFLW have thought about things and gone with, "within 18 picks" - the idea being each club starts with 1 pick per round of the draft, if you decide to trade out of that round knowing you hav an academy player or F&D pick that's likely to be bid upon earlier than later, that's on you for not having an available pick

Making it within 10 picks would also freeze teams out of being able to match unless the overpaid to jump up to a required pick as part of live trading

Yeah, but that involves anticipating other club's picking a la Essendon with Kako.

This happened to Fremantle in 2019 when Carlton put a bid on Liam Henry with pick 9 - that forced Fremantle to scramble for a live trade to at least cover some points, but they still finished with a deficit of 265 points from the bid going into the 2020 draft:

“We also have a deficit on that 2020 first round pick which will mean it will slide back. As to how far, that depends on where we finish next year.

“For example, a number one pick would slide to pick two, while a pick 18 would slide to pick 26.”

So in theory you could probably get away with two no1 picks going into a trade defecit b2b and end up with a really bad hand the third season.

Whichever way you look at it, the AFL has got the academy bidding system way out of wack.
