Hahaha. 2 actually mate. Hitting into a fierce breeze from that end.

Helmets aren't very flattering headwear when you have a giant oversized melon, are they?

What are you wearing a body guard for against the toads? The Wriggler must have been bowling heat!

Looks like the cones are in a fair way????

Yeah, they put the cones on the wicket square to try and make it a high scoring game. Thats how slow the outfield is!!!

Yeah, full body armour. I have had it permanently attached in the form of 47 kgs of body fat. It has served me beautifully in recent years. Yet to have a broken bone, except fingers, which they found it hard to surgically attach any more fat to.

I'm not sure how the form of a guy batting at 6 is an indictment on the form of the top order?? Adam Gilchrist was a great player, does that mean that Haydos, Alfie and Punter were no good? I don't really understand what you are getting at.

I mean that if a guy batting at 6 is making hundreds, and he is in long enough to make hundreds then there is a fair chance that his top order are failing to allow him to be there long enough to make one. Lets face it, if he comes in at 4-350, with the condition of New Zealand Cricket, they are already well into the 2nd session on the 2nd day. For him to then enter the crease and make a ton, it would be fair to say they have made it to the third day for the first innings and there would likely be no result.

I dont think Dan Vettori is the kind to take his team's first innings into a third day with the exception being perhaps a dead rubber. Hope thats clearer, Johnny.

I reckon that went for six...

Mate, lose the helmet. Are they that fast? Only ever wore a helmet for 1 ball because I thought Brett Sherriff was scary. Then I faced him and got rid of it.

I actually agree with Plugger for once, vetorri batting mainly at 8 should not have had a chance to score so many runs if the top order wasnt so crap.

Playing on a junior ground there mayhem? Cones are in half way by the looks of it. Cant be many blokes using gm bats anymore, havent seen one for years.

You obviously don't watch much test cricket. As shane watson is using one.

Mayhems GM is from one of the englishmen who plays for sale, he has a contract with GM.

Locally not many people use them...not sure why maybe lack of stock, quality or price are factors.

Its at the Sale oval, the ground is notoriously slow due to the fact the shire are reluctant to cut the grass below three inches. They bring in the cones to up the runs, but still hardly any fours are hit totally along the carpet.

I am actually playing at the Sale Main Oval. The cones are in approx. 5 metres. The picture is probably deceptive because of the camber of the outfield I guess.

I watch a heap of test cricket, was talking about local cricket, apart from some guys with really old ones i havent seen a new one i years.

Yeah watson does, a few poms do as well. Gibbs might have used one too for a while I think.

I see the point on Vettori, don't necessarilly agree with it. Gilchrist batted at 7 and made plenty of 100s, I understand that he is a more agressive player than Vettori, but, there are just as many Gilchrist 100s off 170 balls as there are Gilchrist 100s off 120. Same story with Hussey batting at 5, he has had plenty of chances to make 100s over the years.

I'll stick with the helmet on mate. When you open the batting on the fastest, bounciest wicket in Gippsland, in the best competition in Gippsland, I'll wear the helmet every day of the week. Plus, I hook and pull at every opportunity, so, I'd rather be able to do that without fear that worry about having a few more teeth knocked out (already have 3 fake teeth after colliding with a team mate in the outfield taking a catch).

As explained by Nugget, one of my mates has a GM contract, so, I was using his bat. I had been using a Kookaburra, but, some guy from Stratty stole it off me, so, I started using the GM. It's a very light bat, with a pretty good hitting zone.

I think locally they don't get used alot because they are fairly expensive. The top of the range GM's can be approx. $100-150 more than the top of the range Gray Nic/Kookas, so, they are not widely marketted over here anymore.

The size of the man swinging the bat doesn't help too...:)

Sorry mayhem had to say it..

I know Sale Maffra has been the strongest comp in the past but is that still the case?

Sale-Maffra still play div 1 country week?

I think leongatha, warragul and west gippy are all in div 2. I think west gippy would have the greatest depth but the top sides are probably similar to leongatha and warragul from what i have seen and heard.

Yes I think we are. Consistently our teams are more even and have really good players in every aspect of the game. Yes other leagues might have brilliant players but consistently our league produces better teams than what anyone else can. Oh and Steve Nicholls grew up in the SMCA….

Outside of our top ten we probaly have 10-20 players that could easily fill a void left by someone not playing GCL. On last sunday our three best cricketers arguably in King, Stuart Anderson and Burgiel didn't play. Add Andrew Tatterson too who has not played due to work commitments, who would be a shoe in to open the batting for SMCA.

We have three players that have played/playing first class cricket in Nathan King, Steve Parry and Ian Wrigglesworth. Plus Stuart Anderson who played for Australia's Under Nineteen side before choosing football, he was also considered Melbournes "marquee" player when returning to cricket and would have played one day cricket for victoria, if he had chosen to play another year at melbourne..

We have the best batsmen in Gippsland in Adrian Burgiel, the two best keeper/batsmens in Nathan Massey and Brett Lanigan. The best off spinner this side of melbourne plays at Maffra in Ben Durrant, who played district cricket in the firsts for Casey South Melbourne. Another player in Nat Campbell, who was a firsts player at Prahran can't get a match in our GCL.

Richard Gleeson is leading the wickets for GCL. Luke Henderson who posts on this site, can't get near the GCL side at the moment even though he was a member of the team of the year for Gippsland and won the bowling average for the league last year.

Currently our A grade is as even as it has been for years and the standard of cricket has improved dramatically from last year (probably due to having eight teams).

A one off loss to Traralgon is not the be all, end all. As I am told half the team were extremely hungover and very arrogant. Yes you can argue that Bairnsdale beat SMCA in the GCL final. But it was fairly obvious that the wicket was prepared to suit Bairnsdale and not SMCA. The fact we play provincial country week and do well probably shows that we are a stronger competition too.

How can you say you have the best everything in gippsland, you ever seen anyone from the west gippy league? or cos we dont play GCL do we not count? I am not saying we have better players or not but you have made a lot of big statements there considering ya havent seen everyone.

I played against Wets Gippsland in Div 4 country week with calendonia....sorry but they weren't up to the standard of our senior side probably indicating a weaker competition.

I just had a look and Sale Maffra won the GCL final every year from 02/03 to 06/07 - 5 in a row. They have lost the last 2 finals. 7 finals in a row is a great record and it might be more thats as far back as I could find the records.

That was when a country week was run buy the same idiots each year who just picked there mates to play and other guns wouldnt play with them. Could have picked 2 sides better than the ones that we used to send away.

Since Mark Cooper and now Shane Dole are running things we have won div 4 and div 3 GF's and most of the to players now make themselves available.

West Gippy has beaten very strong DDCA sides the last 2 years in 20/20, i know its a different game but the DDCA is a bloody good standard.

West Gippy used to be in GCL but pulled out a few years ago. Any idea if they are considering coming back into GCL or are they happy playing against the suburban leagues?

I think we will stay where we are, we are in region 8 (i think) with Yarra Valley, Ferntree Gully and Mornington. They are very strong leagues and they have a good junior and U/21 programs which really helps the good kids playing more cricket in a good standard. I dont think the best kids get a lot out of turning up and making 50 every week in local leagues.
