I dislike Essendon more than any other club, but this is a big win for them if it happens. They already have the best player in the competition, adding another very good one will increase the number of such players to 2, which can only be a good thing for their future prospects.

So the AFL would determine what Saints get in return if they don't match Essendon's offer?

They would wait until the end of FA, assess St Kilda's losses and gains, and compensate them accordingly.

Good pick up for the Bombers but they are paying overs $$$'s wise. I don't think it will bite them in the back side though because unlike say Collingwood or Carlton, they don't have a number of 8-10 players who would demand really good coin - they have alot of battlers who have probably been getting paid overs like Monfries.

It's a risk, what we are doing - but we have to take a chance if we want to secure some elite talent.

Why would St Kilda match Essendon's offer on a player who clearly doesn't want to stay?

He's gone. Time to move on.

Ryan O'Keefe anyone?

(Ok, so I'm desperately still holding out that there is a glimmer of hope)

So they picked up Gary Ablett jr as well? Massive coup for them. What did the Suns get in return?

No, they have the umpires pet. He IS good, the best, no way. Ablett #1, then anyone, including Watson,
Agree, adding Goddard, and a FIT Stanton will make them top 4 candidates with Zaharakis back as well. Little luck with Ryder/Bellchambers, and this year's stunning early season form may continue to rd 20, then they can afford a few losses and peak in September. Goddard vwould like a realistic shot at a flag.

This part of the FA process is a mere formality, put in place for the very, very rare cases where a player may completely blindside his club with a rival offer.

The clubs drafted the rules, this is just a safeguard for them.

It sure has deterioriated
My main interest in originating the thread was getting the impressions of St kilda fans to Goddards likely departure. Not necessarily whether he is a good get for the Dons

Without doubt. However, there's always going to be some people who'd rather throw rocks at us. They should be giving us a BJ instead.

Oh wait..

St. Kilda can't make a counter offer, they can match the one on the table or not. If they don't he's at Essendon. If they do, he can stay at the Saints, request a trade, or enter the draft. He automatically goes to Essendon if st. Kilda don't match the offer, but he doesn't automatically stay at the Saints if they do.

'HAS EXISTING CLUB MATCHED OFFER - NO: Move to new club OR Stay with existing club'

It's a moot point as we're not going to give him anywhere near Essendon's offer, but you are just wrong.

This is a good point - if they say Saints can have 2 1st round draft picks in this very good up coming draft I would tell him to not let the door hit him on the way out. Good player but at 28 we may have seen the best of him. If they offer 1 2nd round pick then it would be worth finding the cash for him. I think the AFL need to give the Saints the full picture to look at - that includes compensation.

600k a year for 4 years (4th year conditional) with 100k a year of it outside the cap as a veteran and Wednesday's off to play Golf

Most people generally say they don't hate Essendon (that much), but it seems like we are more disliked than what is said. How a Geelong supporter could be affected by this is quite bemusing. Seems like the St Kilda supporters are less effected and more composed than some of them.
Had it have been a team like Richmond, Sydney, Collingwood or North etc, this thread would have been full of praise on what a wonderful signing it would have been. Only Carlton and Essendon would receive criticism for chasing a player like Goddard.

I think that he will be a great addition to our side. Has been a great player for St Kilda and almost single-handedly won them a premiership. Was battling injury in 2011 and didn't have a good year this year, but I can see him firing for us (or St Kilda) next year. The motivation of a premiership may drive hime to perform better in the next few years. Realistically, we should play finals regularly in the next few years (which will be the aim and expectations of the club) and contend in a few years time.
The signing of Goddard (if he comes to us) will not only have a positive impact on the field, but will also have a positive impact off the field (Memberships, crowds etc).

As for paying overs for him, I am not too fussed really. Haven't signed much players of note for a very long time so it is quite refreshing to gain a player like Goddard. It may also clear some list cloggers.

Yes it is a risk signing him to a 4 year deal, but that is what we have been missing. Every club makes risk. Some pay off and others do not. Plus his finals experience is invaluable to us as well, so he knows what it takes to be there.

That would be lower then what Essendon is offering, so it wouldn't work. St Kilda MUST match Essendon's offer if they want to keep him.

Saints could offer less than Essendon and Goodard can decided to accpet the lesser offer. It is incorrect to say MUST.

If they do match he will have to be traded to get to Essendon - maybe Hooker and 2nd rounder:rolleyes:

or enter the draft although I doubt he would last until Essendons 1st pick

I think the Form 41 dictates that it is now "must".
