Wasn't sure where to put this but huge news coming out of Salk Oval with our very own VFL coach James Frawley signing on to play for the mighty Palm Beach Currumbin Lions in this year's QAFL season. I'm guessing this means he will no longer be playing any VFL games for us in 2023...

Chip should get the chance to play alongside our two academy boys Walter and Read in a few QAFL games this year. David Armitage has also signed on to play for PBC this year so the Lions could very well be on their way to a QAFL flag this year and perhaps Walter and Read will take part in a senior premiership before we draft them.

Unless it's like..

How it's done in vic is that players at afl/vfl clubs is that you also have a local club you sign at for when you aren't playing VFL you play for your local club.
Do you guys do that too?

I think he would have signed for Southport if that was the case. I'm fairly sure the fringe players from Southport are sent down to the QAFL clubs when they aren't picked but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

That's how we do it at the Lions with our VFL top ups. If they aren't playing for the VFL team, they play for their QAFL team.

I'm assuming if Frawley is your VFL coach, he'll be coaching your VFL team most weekends. It wouldn't make sense for Southport to sign a player who won't be available to them every weekend.

When he's not coaching the VFL team, home or away, he can run out for the local QAFL team.

Ok cheers.

We’ll it baffles me that ginnivan had a ‘4 week suspension’

And Andrew has a ‘2 week suspension’ yet they’ll miss the exact same number of games.

Missed a trick there.

Our leadership group decided the punishment which was ticked off by the club. Obviously, they went with 2 AFL games and all practice and VFL games (I doubt he plays next week in VFL). Considering Andrew circumstances, I would be dish out harsher penalty.

IMO, Ginnivan has nothing to do with it.

Technically they both got the same "AFL Ban which was 2 weeks" both clubs just added on the practice games to make it 4.

Their suspensions are completely different. Andrew could have killed himself or other people. His is a go to court type offence.

Ginnivan’s is not. Now, if he went and drove after then it would be a different story.

Good to see Rosas get a run through the guts. Now get him in the 1’s.

As an aside, the VFL boys were sitting in amongst the top stand forward pocket on the weekend, and I’m about 190cm and 95kg-ish (pure muscle obviously :drunk:) and it felt like young Wil Powell was towering over me. Seriously solid unit he has become. No wonder Dew mentioned the possibility of running him through the middle. Can’t wait to see him back out there.

Reserves smacked them good. My goodness.

So Sexton is an option if we want small forward firepower, or Rosas to return (replace Casboult)

Faulkner maybe a chance if we want some outside run until Powell/Weller/Ellis return.

Anderson or Tsitas if we want inside support and some grunt (replace a Davies type).

But someone should be rewarded. Maybe multiple someones…

Wil Powell would be getting those Jack Bowes midfield mins we all wanted if that happened. If Will Day is playing inside, would love to see Powell inside

Anyone gonna head down to Carrara at midday on Saturday to watch our R1 VFL clash against Williamstown? They finished 20th last year so I would think our ressies should secure a solid win and start the VFL season right the way. Obviously all eyes will be on Powell in his return and Humphrey should be interesting to watch as well. It's starting to look like Chol might even end up playing in this game so there are plenty of reasons to watch.

Funny how Southport are hosting Sandringham just down the road about an hour later. Should be a good start to the VFL season for both GC teams.

Drummond on Moyle
“We’ll be giving him some experience and time up forward to continue working on his forward craft, so hopefully sometime in the future Moyley is capable enough up forward that we can play Wittsy and himself in the same team.”
Drummond on Johnston
“He’s come in and really fit in well with the program, he’s a smart young kid who knows his footy. He’s come along leaps and bounds in his first pre-season at the club.”

PRESEASON SNAPSHOT
Head coach Drummond breaks down who has impressed him across the pre-season.
Fastest and fittest: Oscar Faulkhead and Sandy Brock
Most dedicated: Oscar Faulkhead, Sandy Brock, and James Tsitas
Most leadership (outside of captains): Ned Moyle
Most reliable: Jed Anderson, Connor Blakley, James Tsitas
Most exciting up-and-coming player: Lloyd Johnson
Greatest ball winner: Connor Blakely
Best ball user: Rory Atkins
X-factor: Lloyd Johnston

Super keen to watch Johnstone this year, aswell as Humphrey but think he won't be in the vfl long. Interesting that they are keen for a Moyle/ witts combination in the afl, obviously casboult is nearing the end but wonder where that leaves chol.
