Good and natural idea...for whom? Not for the serious fans, just for networks and occasional viewers. The whole stretch of Grand Final Day (when your team is competing, and especially when you have a ticket), from the early morning breakfast, getting to the ground early, enjoying the festivities at the ground, the game itself, then starting the party in earnest once the game is done - that's possibly unique in the world, and to sell it all out for TV networks wanting to squeeze in some more uninterested TV audience? Dud idea.
Couldn't have written it better myself. Here here. After experiencing my first GF this year there's no way it'd be fair to the fans of the competing sides to wait an extra 5-6 hours; then have less time to celebrate if your team is victorious. Also a big fan of the post game concert, adds to the event even more for the victor, that'd be something that'd possibly go if there was a night GF.

Interested to see if it takes off in 2017 at AFL level after being talked about for many years.

I'm a religious person myself but not someone who has ever wanted to ram the idea of no Good Friday Footy on people. In fact on the contrary I normally go to the local WAFL game on Good Friday afternoon, great chance to support the local footy ans the game itself is often well supported in terms of people through the gates,

You know, now that I've given it some thought.

We should have someone say a few words about what the day is all about before the game.

Something like this perhaps....

Good Friday is a public holiday originally based on the primitive and misguided belief in the fictional scriptures of uneducated desert dwellers written thousands of years ago.

These writings, amongst other things, promote the hatred and murder of homosexuals, the oppression of women, slavery, racism and genocide.

The fundamental cornerstone of this belief is the utterly abhorrent notion that anyone (including children) that doesn't "believe in these stories, will be burnt and tortured for all eternity in "hell".

This threat of "hell"
has been used over the years by many regimes as a method of controlling the masses, and due to to ignorance and the method of indoctrination of the young, has previously been largely successful in convincing the vast majority to follow these beliefs.

This was the case until very recently, when breakthroughs in science exposed many inconsistencies in these claims, such as the Earth not being 8000 years old and created in 6 days and all humans are the direct product of incest.

This, combined with the Western worlds intellectual evolution against many of the horrific teachings of the bible, has led to the day becoming little more than a commercial arrangement between employers and employees based on a now debunked tradition.

Yeah I'd be happy with something like that before the game

Im with you 100% Bring on GF football!
If the rapidly declining numbers of christians that actually go to church dont like it so be it - the majority rules!

Not for the serious fans? :) What does that even mean?
You don't watch night games through the year and through the finals?
Only people that watch day games should be deemed as serious fans?

It will happen and Gil is even open to a twilight GF....just to whet the appetite of the serious fans....to groom them to the inevitable....a night GF.
Being unique doesn't make it right. Maybe most other 'serious' sports just got it right a long time ago and we're the dinosaurs here.

............and you can't party after 10pm on a Saturday night. Is this Melbourne we're talking about and not North Korea?
Better game spectacle, better pre-game spectacle, more people able to watch the game nationally, more revenue etc etc

Get used to it........it's coming.

The other two most important games the PL Finals are played at night and no one bitches.
You could argue its also hard on the players when most of the finals are played at night to force them to play the most important game during the day.

Not everyone watches prelim finals, but a lot of people watch the grand final. Moving it to the evenings would remove the need for the public holiday in melbourne, and make grand final barbeques less of a thing imo

We all know that it's going to happen and for the reasons it will happen and in the same way as for Easter Friday games, the AFL just can't position themselves on the front foot and just go ahead and get things done.

Instead we'll talk about it one year.....maybe a twilight game the next year.....followed by a few polls and throwing it to everybody to see what they think.....and that useless word (tradition) will come up so many times that we'll just finally want to get it over and done with......and then we'll never look back and wonder why we didn't do it earlier.

Just put it front and square on the agenda AFL, and do it.

Oh....the barbecues.
Don't people eat in the evening any more? :)

How about this:

People go about their business during the course of the day and retail doesn't get interrupted.
Other than restaurants and bars, we'll have a possible larger audience....and even there, bring a TV into the restaurant or bar, if it's a casual place.

Everyone has finished work around the country and can get their BBQ's up and running.
6pm - 7pm dinner and a few drinks.....Everyone in a good mood.....Game ends and it's only 10.30....plenty of time to go out if you want to....Remember Melbourne not North Korea....everybody happy.....OK not everybody because it will cut across some peoples evenings, but the larger population get to watch the game in a civilised manner as people do, all over the world.
