Ok, before I start, let me begin and tell you that I am a huge fan of NRL, and am not meaning this to be NRL bashing or anything...

I'm not sure if this is because I am in Victoria, or not, but whenever I read the newspaper, the stories seem to be 50-50 in regards to good news/controversal stories. I go online and it seems that the NSW based media are also around the same(ie foxsports, sportal, etc). I think over the past 2-3 years or so, I have spent more time trying to defend the sport, than showing its highlights.

This week has seen the Rabbitohs in trouble with player vs coach in a punchup, that story has seen more media airtime than the positives of 2 sydney clubs finishing top of the table, the all-QLD final, etc.

All I want is the NRL to have a week or two, without controversy of some sort, and how I am able to talk AFL, Union or Soccer fans into atleast watching the NRL on tv and giving it a chance. Then after its been 2 weeks without controversy, lets try to get a month, then a season.

The Dally M hardly got a mention, like it has in previous years, I don't know if that was the case in NSW or QLD. But the State of origin games had alot of airtime and most of it was positive.

Sorry if this seems to be dribble, but I want to be able to talk about NRL with my mates etc and not have to defend its negatives that get shown up in the media every week. Anyone got ideas of what I could say etc?

Don't worry about the dickwads who are insecure.
I am an AFl and football (soccer) fan as well.
If we can actually get a a TV deal that shows rugby league at a decent hour in Melbourne, then a lot of our troubles will begin to evaporate.
The game remains strong in its heartland and I laugh at the AFL's insistance to introduc a team into West Sydney, whcih will be met with such a resounding no.

David Gallop is not 100% in favour of this.

On offsiders this morning he said it is often better not to show the game than cop bad ratings.

AFL get bad ratings in sydney and to a lesser extent brisbane but they always get shown live or at a pretty decent time. Even the AFL games this weekend got shown at around 9.30pm and 8.30pm in sydney and there was no swans in there. What he said on the offsiders made no sense

they raised that specific point exactly, said he didn't necessarily want the NRL to go down the same path of being belted in the ratings compared to other codes when they are in good timeslots

Whats the Warren Ryan quote
"They dont report the thousands of safe plane landings, its only the ones that crash"

David Gallop to me seems to be like a horse with its blinkers on, he seems to have his mind set on one thing, and anything else that happens 'did not really happen' in his eyes and 'can not be changed or fixed'. He has had a number of times to give the green light to showing some storm games live or within a reasonable time into victoria when there is no AFL on, and has not taken that opportunity. Storm used to play a lot of sunday games and were shown live into melbourne on ch9 most of the time, now as it comes to being a final against 'rivals' manly, foxtel shows the game at 10:30 and ch9 at 11. Against a game of Western Bulldogs vs Brisbane (which is not a high rating game, but due to it being the only sport on it got some ratings). Melbourne have been a dominant team of the past few years, and this could've been a perfect opportunity for gallop and his henchmen to benifet from it. Telstra and other major sponsors have all said that they want a team in Melbourne for aslong as they sponsor, as they want it to be a truely national comp, that and the fact that 1/5th of the population lives in victoria. One thing that has come from Storms success is they are no longer getting the lowest crowd numbers, and other then the qld sides are up there with the sydney teams etc.

I also remember how they used to advertise NRL as being the number 1 tv sport in the country, I don't know how they would be able to say that now with ch9 not even showing storm games live or close too live into victoria. I do however applaud them for showing the state of origin games live into victoria, even if neither state is victoria...

I find it odd that a Storm fan would write this.

Im split on whether any publicity is good publicity..that only would be a good thing in NSW and QLD where the code is number 1.

No doubt in Victoria the media jump on the bad stories and we saw this with Origin 3 fight, gloating with Hunt signing and the scandals..

Gallop on the offsiders was pretty good, he said the game on the field was never better which is true..and for NRL standards we got the biggest ever crowds, ratings are up, memberships are up, the sponsors are staying and corporates are staying.

Yeah we dont want scandels, but the media overplays it with 'another nail in the coffin'

No doubt too news ltd is loving the WS18 by writing a anti afl story every week..which then gets them more hits on the website and talk back radio heats up.

But gotta say the Swans, Waratahs and Sydney fc would probably kill for some of the attention and media space Rugby League has got this year...Rugby League more than any seems to be able to pick itself up..and simple thing too...

People generally dont care ie:crowds and ratings at a all time high..sure some over protective mothers will keep kids away from playing, but if the kid him or herself likes the game and wants to play..they simply will

I have never seen a soccer player say my mum made me soccer but rugby league was the sport I wanted to play.

Why?
Western Sydney is the very stronghold of RL in Sydney. Parramatta, Penrith, Balmain. The Sydney Swans are struggling with profits and have a coach who says they can't bottom out the way that other AFL clubs can.
I believe the AFL needs to get Sydney Swans right first, and after 30 years, they are only marginally stronger now than they were all that time ago.
I am well aware that Storm face similar problems to the Sydney Swans.
Bringing in another club into Melbourne while the Storm still struggle in certain areas would be a fiasco. Just like West Sydney will be.
I don't find my comment strange at all. Just realistic.

the confusion arised from the fact that your initial assertion made no reference to qualifying that you meant 'as a second team'. Moreso i think you may have adapted your argument.

Nevertheless the Storm are going for their 4th grand final in a row so good luck to them

I think when Victoria gets the domestic/super16's rugby team, the storm may struggle abit then, as a lot of storm fans aren't just league fans, but union aswell. Some moreso union, than league. Melbourne as a city always sells well with international games in both union and league, but I think if you have both clubs playing at a similar time, it will be hard for people to go to both. I know the union only goes for around 16 weeks or whatever and ends half way thru the nrl season, but that is still a fair chunk... I, myself am a huge fan of league and a huge rugby union fan, although atm I follow ACT brumbies, and I will find it hard to choose which games I will choose to go too if they decide to play both at home on the same weekend.

Got a good solution for you.....just go and watch the Brumbies in Melbourne and watch the Storm in all the other games:D

gallops an idiot and makes me shake my head that he is head of our game. you may have to put up with bad ratings for a while but they will get better with time, this is just normal business
