Time to support our giraffes I guess. West may have eaten that one doughnut this year but he IS a good footy player. I'm sure if he strings a few games together he will be much more effective around the ground ... since that is one of if not his biggest his strength in the VFL. He can ruck fine enough as well.

After this stressful season and ultimate GF win I decided to try to take footy less personal all the time, but I ****ing flipped out the last few days when it was obvious Mumford was gone. I am back to a state of okayness since we threw a late pick on Drum and spun the multi pick trade which I think are good moves.

Bloody footy. Fingers crossed Dermie isn't a complete dumbass and his 'Blake will peak at 27/28' call is right.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Didn't you guys have high rapts on this bloke, would you rather have traded Blake?

Personally, i would have rather traded Blake as Mumford is already a better footballer than Blake (by a long shot) and IMO will eventually become a better tap ruckmen too. But many GFC fans feel differently, and would rather hold on to Blake.

But the fact is both players have contracts that have expired and opposition clubs showed no interest in Blake but plenty of interest in Mumford. Given our salary cap problems players have to go, and we can't match other clubs deals (as we have seen with Sydney's offer versus Geelongs offer on Mumford).

But whatever. You have an excellent prospect in Mummy. He has had only one real season to show his wares and has looked great. And that is saying something, as ruckmen usually show nothing until 2 or 3 seasons into their tenure. Enjoy your mummy - you are certainly paying plenty for the privilege.

About 39 out of every 40 people on this forum would have preferred to trade Blake. This is however how the cookie crumbled and we will now have to live with it.

Sydney obviously wanted more success in the future rather than now or they would have gone with Blake. Mumford will still get shown up with his ruckwork by majority of the other teams but his ability around the ground should keep him as a valuable player until he improves in the near future. My suggestion would be to play him in the forward line a bit to add that ability in as well. He is a talent and Geelong football club did very well nurturing it however now it comes down to whether Sydney can continue that. Sydney's ability will now be the difference between him becoming a really good player and him not advancing anymore than he already has.

Yes

But clearly no one bit at Blake...and the Mummy was offered a lot :(

Not angry, just disappointed. But not in the way my parents used to tell me the same thing.

Gonna miss you big fella, all the best at the Swans :thumbsu:

Agreed...:(to see you go, but all the best Mummy

I hope we smash the Swans whenever we play them, and win the flag in 2010, but I hope you have a long and successful career. Farewell.

Very disappointing to loose Mummy, he's streets ahead of Blake imo.

What worries me is that if Otto as a long injury again next year, we are very short on experienced ruckmen, and Blake is so one dimensional, I cant see him playing a senior role.

At 22...how will Mummy develop without the likes of Otto and Egan to help him develop?

That is a huge amount of responsibility and pressure.....how many people will be expecting him to come out of the blocks in 2010 as a star ruckman?

I wish him luck at Sydney...but to be honest I am more worried about the GC, as I think Sydney have handled this like teh GC will next year.....lots of media pressure and throw some more money at it.....

The Abletts and the Selwood's of the world may not be turned by it....but what is to say some of our other Star's won't be.....what if Simpson shows half the promise next year.....will he get 1.2mill thrown at him???

See Ya Mummy! Enjoy the Harbour Town.....I don't blame ya, but I am dissappointed as without Geelong you wouldn't have had this chance!

God, some of you Geelong supporters are amazing. You really want your cake and eat it too. We have this thing in the AFL called the 'salary cap', its there to stop Dynasties being created. If we didnt have it, we would have the same situation as what the premier league has, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are always dominationg there. Here, if we didnt have the salary cap, we would have Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and possibly richmond constantly fighting it out for the premiership and the rest of the league fighting for the scraps. Unfortunately when you are as succesful as Geelong has been, be prepaired to start losing players. This Mumford deal is the start of many to come in the coming years, get used to it....and no, this is not a troll.

I've got mixed feelings.
On one hand i'm really disappointed to see him go because i loved watching him play and was so excited about the prospect of watching develop further, but on the other hand i don't blame him for going because when you combine the coin, the job security and the guaranteed game time it's the deal of a lifetime for an unproven rookie and one that very few would be able to refuse.

I wish him all the best.

The GFC fiddling around with good players on rookie lists was bound to hurt us at some stage, hopefully doesn't happen with Ranga as well.

Balme said on SEN this morning that Ranga's contracted for another year, is very happy at Geelong and the club hopes he will play a bit of senior football next year :thumbsu:

Sorry JSSwan you are a troll. We have a right to be disappointed because the way that footy, well victorian real ffoty works, is that you get kids, develop them, get to know them and become loyal to them. Real supporters are not just interested in going to the footy as a social outing to keep up with a trend, we actually look at the whole picture of a club and its team.
And winning premierships actually disadvantages a team if you don't have Sydneys bottomless pit of money and don't even get into the comparison with the draft as Carlton showed the way around that when it drafted Judd.

Bolded is rubbish. If you create the player ie draft him as a junior and make him a superstar, you should not be penalised for great coaching and recruiting. Whats the problem with dynasties? Imagine the AFL without the dynasties of hawthorn 80's, Richmond 60's - 70's, Melbourne 50's. What a crap competition it would be, without historical tales of champion teams.

We would not have the "English Situation" because they have a transfer system. The big 4 did not recruit players at a young age and make them into guns. They bought the guns from other clubs. So your argument is hogwash, misinformed, poorly calculated and shows a complete lack of any knowledge about English football/transfer markets in general.

If you create the player you should be able to pay them market value, and go over the salary cap. But inturn you can’t trade in any big guns in while you are over the salary cap. The NBA works this way.

You should not be penalised for being smart and successful it’s ludicrous.

I'm sorry that you see me as a troll, honestly I'm not trying to come across as one. I'm just trying to state that that is how the salary cap works. also, I could give many examples of teams including the swans, who have picked up young 'stars' and have only been able to keep them for a short period of time because they left for money or other reason like wanting to return home...A. Rocca, S. Grant, D. Gaspar, just off the top of my head.

On the matter of a bigger salary cap, as has been mentioned a couple of times here already, living in Sydney is an expensive exercise. I dont, I live in Melbourne, I do love coming to Geelong for the 1 game of the year at kardinia park, there is a Roast(s) and chips shop opposite the ground on the main road that honestly still sells its food at genuine 1070's prices. I fly up to Sydney for 2-3 games a year and the prices up there for anything are an absolute rip off, from the taxis to the drinks to the food, to publc transport. My friend , who's been up there for 4 years now, after originally living in Melbouren his whole life is convinced that everyone is out to rip off everyone in Sydney. Understand now why we have a larger salary cap.

All of this post is utter garbage.

All of the dynasties you quote occurred prior to the introduction of the draft. The only "dynasty" of recent times was the Lions, which occurred due to excessive salary cap concessions, which have since been removed.

The English situation occurs purely due to the availability of financial resources. See Chelsea and Man City's progress in recent times.

Geelong's reward for great drafting, trading and coaching is three grand final appearances and two premierships. Now the pressure is on for us to keep the team together, and the system as designed is working to ensure we don't play in 5-10 GFs in succession.

I saw a stat somewhere that said that every one of the 16 AFL teams have played in a Prelim this decade. The system is working as designed, and so it should.

The challenge for Geelong now is how to maximise our chances while our window is open. Once it closes, we go throught the cycle of good drafting, trading and coaching all over again to create our next opportunity.

Just because the club has managed itself well over the past decade does not automatically entitle it to maintain a list full of superstars at market value.
