Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Geelong goes out on a limb to give this fat kid a break in the AFL, and he repays the favour by heading north for $$$, only to be second ruck.

I can understand Mumford's motivation - totally $$$ focused. Do we want someone like that at Catland? NO

We'll be rapt to pick up Mumford, he is a talent, and he will get better. Been offered upwards of $1m over 3 years and in this day and age, loyalty really doesn't count so much when you have an opportunity to set yourself up financially. Geelong couldn't do that for Mumford with it's salary restrictions and we could, unfortunately for Geelong (and fortunately for us), I think he's made a smart decision.

Put yourself in the same situation. Probably his only opportunity in his life to make those sort of dollars. Hell I would do it. Clubs are quick to demand loyalty from their players but are just as quick to cut a player that doesn't fit into their plans.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Plus the fact that in his career Sydney may not even get close to winning a premiership. Surely success has to count for something too.

Maybe he's bitter about not getting selected for finals.

We need to play hardball better than what we have done...for sure. Mumford wouldn't be happy to stay i'm sure. He has just had an excellent offer put in front of him so only natural for him to be interested, but i'm positive that if it doesn't work he would be happy at the GFC!

People need to remember that this draft is slightly compromised and apparently quite shallow - we miss out on access to a bunch of 17 year olds d/t concessions to Gold Coast and if you look at Mark Williams article on the AFL website he was pointing to pick 9 being the equivalent of about pick 15 in previous drafts.... therefore Pick 14 is justified for Mumford, Pick 28 is a bargain.

I think we either organise a deal with Pick 28 and Jesse Smith or Drum....maybe looking at giving up Wojo (as much as i hate that)....or better still not trading at all!!

Still trying to understand how our team, a team with no super draft picks and a team that was built from scratch is having huge salary cap problems...and then a team like the 'Aints or the Dawks, who have massive high draft pick superstars (that must be on huge wages) can afford to make big plays for Burgoyne, Lovett, Gibson and god knows who else. Simply can't understand how the Hawks have any room in their cap to acquire Burgoyne and not dish off a player???

I think Hawthorn have a teaching/nursing style system in place where pay is based purely on how many years you're at the club. It was one of the initiatives that Clarkson implemented from memory of an article I read. Could be wrong, but that would explain how they have room in the cap.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Can't see Burgoyne going to Hawthorn anyway after the debacle yesterday. The Hawks want a premiership player from Port but wont give up a premiership player! Ha. They are a joke.
Anyway whats the big fuss over him anyway?

Think of Mumford going as a business deal. We got him for nothing from the bush, we offload him for a high draft pick. If he wants to go at least we will get something for him unlike previous years. Mumford is a required player at GFC so they will play hardball.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

A LOT of people on here were pushing for the cats to convince mummy last year that he should stay on the rookie list for another year so that we didn't have to lose any player. (many were rejoicing when it happened).

Well........ suck it up boys and girls because if he had been signed last year then he would be contracted right now.

But even then you would expect that he'd only have been given a 2 year deal and he'd be uncontracted for GC to swoop next year anyway.

There's just stuff all we can do about it.

You can cover your arse / back end contracts / convince players to accept less money. But only for so long. Eventually the dam walls burst and players have to go.

And more often than not you don't get the luxury of choosing who they are.

This is exactly what TPP is set up for. It's meant to disadvantage people who are successful. It's life, we just need to trust the club to get us through this zone without to much damage.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Swap first-round picks.

We get pick 6, them 17. Mummy heads north (as much as I don't wanna see it happen).

Far better result than another second-round pick.

If we get him, we will have him for at least 10-12 years. Are you honestly saying that for the next 10-12 years, our premiership window will be totaly closed?

I guess you're one of those cats supporters that thinks Geelong will play in every grand final, year after year huh? I felt a bit like that too, after 2006, I have a news flash for you, teams go up and down throughout decades. In 5 years time, Melbourne could be fighting it out for a premieship and Geelong could fighting off a wooden spoon.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

It would be a shame to see Mummy go however I trust that those in charge of the team that have brought 2 premierships to the club in the past 3 years know a thing or two about what they are doing and will again make the tough decisions for the best of the club. If he goes good luck to him. If he stays even better.

You think he's going to play until he's 35?

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Swans want picks right, for a young rebuilding list? How many picks do we need to use in the draft? Why don't we package in some later, 3rd and 4th+ round picks, and try and get a better deal?

He's 23, that'll make him 33-35, not likely. I'm not saying the Swans won't make it, there will be a window, correct. Geelong may fail next year, who knows. Maybe he thinks Geelong are not going to be able to get better, but looking at things at the moment, Geelong look more likely than Sydney.

OK, I apologise, not 10-12 years then, 7-9 years. Still plenty of time for a 'premiership window' to open up. I actually hate using that term "premieship window', I dont really believe they exist. No one was saying we were in our 'premiership window' in 03-07, everyone was predicting us to miss finals, take out wooden spoons etc etc. Its only after we achieved what we achieved that those same journos have come out and in hindsight and have said the swans 'premiership window' has now closed.

very true
Premiership window is a crock of s#!+

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Shame to see him go but if it results in Gazza and Selwood being one club players I dont have a problem with it.

I hope they get something like pick 28 and an upgrade of 17 to 14. Time will tell.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

disappointing, but seems to be the reality of our situation. Hopefully West can step up as the third ruckman. We relied heavily on Mummy this year when Ottens was out, shame he couldnt be there for the GF.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

I most certainly agree with the majority of Cats fans in that we need to play hard ball this time and request a first round pick or a early 2nd round pick or simply let me go in the PSD.

As another member suggested, Mumford appears to have choose the money over the loyalty, therefore unlike the Steve King situation, we owe him nothing. Lets let Melbourne have him for free as opposed to him getting to the club of his choice and us getting walked all over at the draft table..... AGAIN!

First round pick, you are kidding. This is a bloke that wasn't in your best 22 come grand final day. You just dont get a first round pick for a player outside your best 22. As for leaving for money, how about maybe he might leave for better opportunities. Playing every week would be pretty important to him. He is obviously behind Blake in Geelong's thinking now (god knows why). You guys need to concede that the only downside of winning a flag is that it gets hard to keep everyone together. If Geelong play hard ball with the trade its poor form, especially if can't offer him anywhere near the money or the number of games that Sydney are.

Depends what the buyer needs...Mummy was not in our best 22 because of Ottens and the fact that he was a shade behind Blake in experience. His upside looks good enough to be offered 900k over 3 years straight off our rookie list!
Sydney desperately need ruckmen with Jolly gone. Plus big bodied ruckmen with ball skills are hard to come by.
Make no mistake, the only reason Mummy is gone from us is salary cap.

You speak like we havent been in this position before. Just remember we did it in 2007 too moron, we know there are sacrifices. We had to give up King and prismall in the past 2 years and got a couple of late picks for it.

Mumford has value, of course the club is going to stretch for the best deal possible. if we can get a 2nd round pick or a prospect why wouldnt we play hard ball to get it..

You know whats poor form, lieing to another club to get a deal done like you did by telling port brown was available, go troll elsewhere

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

I missed a couple of pages here so sorry if someone has already touched on it: but wouldn't it worth our while to offer Mumford and someone like Tenace in exchange for Jolly?? (assuming clearing two players will fit Jolly into the TPP).
unlike some others here I believe in premiership windows to a certain extent and Jolly would certainly help us further the glory. Afterall Geelong isnt' that far from Melbourne and if Collingwood can't offer the right deal then perhaps we can.
Jolly and Ottens rotating forward / ruck and Blake rotating Ruck / bench would be pretty formidable.

From a Hawks supporter, Hawks never play hardball
