Reckon they were all part of their '93 side when they won after the siren Jayco? I recall Shepp being loaded up with ex-AFL types that year. Were Scott and Rhys Langan(?) part of that side? Probably Mellington before he went to Fitzroy.
Memory is good tongue but not a game you want to think about to much 😞 Scotty Langan coached.Mellington played well and Dean Strauch picking up the medal for BOG Then Shepp blew every one away by sacking Scott who finished up at tonny the following year as coach

Spot on swoop.. Langan did his knee pretty badly early in the year and Shepp, wanting a playing coach, didn't think he'd make it back, so Tonny jumped at the chance. Rod MacPherson took over in 94, and i don't think Langan missed a game at tonny in 94 either.

Yeah not a fond memory! Thought umpire Freer might have been named Shepp's best. 🤣🤣 Jeez Shepparton had a strong lineup when you think about it. Six blokes who had been on Carlton's list plus Mellington. Strauch and the Langan's were Bendigo boys if I recall.

Trivia question Silver , who kicked the goal after the siren to win the 93 granny for Shepp ?

A trickier trivia question: who gave away the free kick to allow Houlihan a shot after the siren?

Some would say there was No Free Kick! From memory it wasn't real conclusive.

Footy different these days.

Players stay on elite lists longer cause it’s cheaper to keep a mature age player than develop a new and younger guy.

Too many teams in the AFL so overall quality ain’t what it used to be.

AFL players make enough money that at 27 yrs of age don’t need a top up out in the country like in the past.

With AFL being so professional, I would love to know the % of ex-players actually go and play on for a few yrs. so many seem to have been broken by the system.

There’s players on AFL lists that to be frank would not dominate at top country level these days unlike the guys that came here in the 80,90s.

Good coach at Locky, nutta. I remember in 96 he used to get Locky out at 3qtr time to do a proper warm up, which hasn't been seen in n&EFL before, they lost the gf by a point I think that year.

Did one of the Shepp teams get a host of willy guns one year as well, think one was shanks, also tat had Stevens, Richardson as well on the early 00s.

Didn't Antrobus win a magary over Kernahan? Derek kickett also signed at tat after sheeds dropped him from the 93gf, although the swans got him late before dekka could kick some Torps. Thorpe also played some ok footy at Footscray

No scholl Ringo in your top Echuca players?

Yes Fly. Answer: none of the Rochy boys know! Technically, Freer paid it against Daryl 'Nuta' O'Neill.

Sticks Polled 10 more Votes than the Ant in 1983 but had been reported during the year

I don’t agree Post , there is the same amount being added to AFL list per year and over the journey list have reduced .
I’ve raised before my veiw that not only has the GVL declined it’s declined significantly in stature compared to other leagues .
Some suggest it’s a result of having close ties and being somewhat under the control of the AFL, I personally think that is a difficult thing to ascertain unless someone has sat in all league meetings and can confirm it ain’t club driven .
Broadcasting , game scheduling ( including GF) all seems to have gone into a different to so Premier Leagues around the state , likewise staffing / administration models / recruitment .
As an example O&M’s last two GM’s have had a large sporting and marketing background and have a reasonably big public profile . They are well known and do a lot of PR work and seemingly also avail themselves not only to media / clubs and also others elsewhere .
The GVL model is quite the opposite and that’s not saying it is wrong without knowing clubs wishes .
The league has seemingly chosen not to chase that high profile elite space which means it’s not as attractive to high end talent .

Good PR helps but the key reason why the O & M has gone ahead of the GV is because more Clubs are spending above the Cap than in the GV IMO. Guys not connected to the Club don't generally travel further for the same or less money. That's my spin on it anyway.

What's there to keep locals in and around Shepp? Young guys have to generally move away so you're not keeping a core group of locals to play, add to the fact there's no big uni in shepp. So there's not an influx moving to the town that play footy.

I agree with roar, AFL lists are much smaller now then in 90s, the problem is vafa and metro clubs can offer good jobs on top of a good wage from playing footy, there's less incentive to travel to the country and play. Most guys out of AFL would coach in the country, when's the last time a player has come straight out of the AFL and coached in the gv?

Andrew Walker?

It's too hard to pay outside the cap, unless you want to go the deer Park extreme to cheat. The effort to do that outweighs the reward for community footy

Reckon he played in northern league for west preston first before he came back

Didn’t coach him or Guy Campbell at Echuca but they would be in Te conversation if I did

To get back to such a “premier” level, GV needs a cap at or above $150k with perhaps an additional $50k to spend on strengthening the Reserves.

Where's the money coming from grass kat?

In 2005, the leagues recruits were Anthony Stevens, porter Saad Saad, Byers, O'Brien, tranquilli, Blake Campbell, Xavier Campbell, hazelman, forys to just name a few, compare that to this year and you can see how the leagues dropped off
