I reckon we were competitive up until the Ky game. Unfortunately Euroa got a sniff and can be very hard to beat down there and our performance was ordinary. The lack of experience is evident at times; 12 players aged 16-20, captain is 21 and only 2 players over 25 in the line -up. the side was also missing L Wilkinson, J Wilkinson, A Evans( Pioneers) and B Welch and lost Joyner( knee) during the game. Some believed that we would struggle to win a game and we won three in a row before coming back to earth. The side can beat teams above it and we knew that some of the younger players would struggle at times. Hubbard,Ismail,Reid, Evans,Costello,Childs,Herrick and Walton are eligible for u/18 and Morris,J Wilkinson,Pearson,Joyner,Male are all 1st year senior players so there will be some ups and downs. If there is some patience shown these boys will develop into excellent footballers. Nearly all players have commited to next year which is great!:thumbsu:
Nice work on the weekend Echuca boys, can't work your results out but happy to see you have a win...Obviously with the young kids you get the yo-yo results...Well done

Does anyone know anything about Shepp Swans and Shepp United having discussions about merging?

Not too sure what United's angle would be on a merger. The story is that the Swans have issues with Shepp Council about Princes Park and the facilities there. Also the finances of the club are widely rumoured to be not too flash.

And how would you know?

Yeah do you? What facts have you got to back up this comment?
If you read my original post on the topic you'll see that I was asking if anyone had any info on the merger story. The facts that I have got to back up the comment are that the general football public are starting to talk about the topic and ask questions.

i have also heard this along the grape vine, and i stress that it is only rumour(which means there are no facts to back it up.)
It has been said that both clubs are struggling financially and that this outcome would be a logical result for both parties.
With the current economic times, coupled with the fact football in the Shepparton area seems to be dropping off, minimising the Shepparton sides from 3 to 2, would be a boom for not only the Shepparton Area, but also the GVFL.

Haven't heard about this yet but you would think it may be something to think about.I keep hearing about the injuries at the Bears, and to their credit it isn't them talking about them they just seem to be getting on with it the best they can.I stopped on the way to Bendigo last week and had a look at them against Rochy and although easily beaten they had a crack and have obviously improved vastly on the last couple of years.Does anyone know how many are missing and are they long term injuries because I reckon if they can get back to full strength they may well have a big say in the makeup of the finals sides.

yeah was a great game, seymour looked out of it at half time, struggling to score and then as seymour always do they fought their way back into. reshuffled their team around a bit at half time with colbert going into the ruck. worked a treat with colbert best on ground.

I was sure Seymour would lose. Not manning up to half time and the team was full of kids. But, wow, they stuck to their jobs and in the end outplayed Rochester who, are still playing their short style of footy which in the end backfired on them. The umpiring was absolutely shocking, one umpire (fatter one) was a disgrace and should not be allowed to umpire again in the GVFL, he was an embarrassment to the league. Well done to Seymour, you stuck it up the best and that will prove invaluable for the remainder of the season. Well done to Jim Kelly for mixing it up with Guy Campbell who was pretty rough on a couple of Seymour's young blokes and thought he could get away with it, he was quiet after that and crawled back into his shell. Did I mention the umpiring was pathetic!!! It's a hard job, but bloody hell, how biased can you get. I would bet the plump one has never played a game of footy in his life. Or he doesn't know the rules!!! Enough said.

Great win by the Lions, they are definitely starting tp look like the real sleeper in the pack. Another big game this week against Ky.
Whats the go with Scanlon, are Seymour qualifying him for the finals? If so they are definitely in the mix. This is possibly one one of the most wide open years In GVFL footy for a long time. Should be a cracking finals series.

Can anyone either confirm or deny rumours that Mansfield have signed Shane Crawford, Nick Holland and Tony Woods?

Tony Woods( Finished Hawks 2002) just turned 40, Nick Holland (finished Hawks 2005) was playing in the VAFA up until last year about 34?(younger than I thought) and Crawford is managed by Kelly but who knows.
Crawford would be the only one you want and is this forking out on the premise they can win a flag? Good for the juniors at Mansfield if true but wouldnt they have had to b cleared to the club before 1st July?

There seems to be a clearance lodged for Nick Holland on the GV website which is still pending. No sign of the other two. Would not imagine that Woods would need a clearance after not playing for so long. Crawford retired, i'm not sure whether he needs a clearance either as he would not be registered with Hawthorn.

I'm pretty sure ex-AFL players don't need a clearance when they retire and go back to local leagues.

I'm not sure he would have the time though, considering his media commitments on Thursday night and on the weekends with MMM.

hows young matt pollock going at echuca

Matt is playing consistent football each week. He is a popular member of the team and has the ability to be a top range GV footballer. More importantly he has committed for 2010. On the subject of Mansfield enticing AFL players mid year-is this good for the league?? No doubt Kelly has a huge advantage through his contacts and are we going to see this happen every year???

Confirmed in todays Shepp News that Crawford and Nick Holland have signed with Mansfield. No details as to how often or when the two will play. Also talk of Nicks brother Ben playing. Huge gets for the Mansfield footy club, Crawford would surely have to be the biggest name to have ever played in the GVFL. Interesting to see how his body holds up.

Well, bugger me. That's massive news.

Eagles to unveil big guns
Alison O'Connor
Mansfield has pulled out the big guns as it prepares for its clash against reigning Goulburn Valley Football League premier Rochester.
While Eagles coach Craig Kelly was remaining tight-lipped yesterday when quizzed about his side's latest recruits, he did let slip on a few hints.
``You might want to look up the name Crawford (in VCFL player registrations),'' Kelly said yesterday.
When pushed on rumours that brothers and former AFL stars Nick and Ben Holland would be joining the club, Kelly was playing it low key.
``I can't tell you that,'' he said with a chuckle.
Nick Holland has been cleared to Mansfield from the Victorian Amateur Football Association, while former Brownlow Medallist and Hawks premiership player Shane Crawford registered with the Eagles during the week.
Even without the big name recruits, Mansfield has been in fine touch this season.
Having dropped three games for the year, the Eagles are looking good for the second half of the season.
``I think we're playing the better footy,'' Kelly said.
``We've jelled together a bit better.
``They won the premiership last year so they're the ones to beat. It will be good to get a gauge of where we are at.''
Rochester coach Daniel Schmidt has given his side a reality check ahead of the match.
Despite sitting atop of the ladder, the premiership coach said his side needed to regroup after it let last week's game against Seymour slip through its fingers in the dying minutes of the game.
``The boys need to smarten their ways,'' Schmidt said. ``I don't know whether the players are getting ahead of themselves or what it is.
``We could have had a five goal win last week, but we threw it away. It was very disappointing.''
Seymour kicked the last four goals of the match to overrun the Tigers by four points last week.
Ash Watson (injury) and Jack Givney (suspension) will come back in to the fold for Rochester this week, while Matt Letcher is expected to miss the crucial clash.
Mansfield hopes to welcome back forward David Mensch and Fraser Stevenson for the game.
Mansfield trails the Tigers by one game on the ladder.
Rochester had the better of the Eagles when the sides last met in round one this year, claiming the win by 11 points.
