And I think that change was driven by a shift from the "keep the list together" philosophy to the "refresh the list" philosophy across the season. I also think that change wasn't driven by salary cap issues but rather the season we had, the final against Geelong the full stop on that.

A bit of both and maybe in Stevos case there are also other reasons.... but Giving away senior players for peanuts and subsidising their salaries doesn’t really line up with the theory of it being a simple list refreshment.

As for the prelim, I’d be hoping we didn’t make list decisions based on one game. Or on the 2020 season which was one out of the box.

We were also belted by Geelong in the 2009 prelim and our list refreshment involved bringing in two senior players to cover weaknesses. This year we couldn’t afford to bring in anybody. There’s so much evidence to suggest the majority of our issues related to salary cap and overpaying and backloading players after 2018 who for one reason or another haven’t earned their keep since then.

Sure, but would it have been so patently obvious if the club had kicked the can further down the road, by back ending Treloar another year, and then treat the issue as next year’s problem?

I think you’re raising some good points on this topic, but on this I disagree if I’m taking in your point correctly. You didn’t need to be a capologist to know we were screwed a long way out. It was inevitable as soon as Gubby walked through the door and reached its crescendo when we had Grundy, JDG and Moore all off-contract in the same year.

I also hazard a guess that with COVID induced reductions and Beams’ payout tacking another year onto Treloar’s contract would have been akin to a knife in a gun fight. Moving forward we need to be a bit smarter with our cap structure by back ending contracts of guys we don’t want to lose and front ending guys that can be replaced. Instead of just back ending all of them...

I've never suggested it was an either/or scenario, clearly both elements were in play. We'd tried to offload Treloar the previous year so he clearly wasn't seen as critical to our future needs. I think Phillips was being forced out of the side rather than allowing him to remain on a wing which seems his only real option. He was obviously seen as expendable. Stevo it appears wasn't heeding the warnings he was apparently being given and the rumoured behaviours in the hub and his on-field performances seem to have been the straws that broke the camels back. As I suggest though, IMHO the change in philosophy was the driver for ultimately reaching those decisions. We could have retained all 3 and worked out alternative options to manage the cap issues.

In terms of form contributing toward that philosophical shift, I'd have thought the 2018, 2019, and 2020 seasons all contributed. Following 2018 we identified midfield issues, recruited Beams to address those. In 2019 and 2020 our on-field performances became increasingly sporadic quarter to quarter and game to game. We never really hit top gear. No doubt the hub contributed toward that but it was just as obvious in our R1 game against the Doggies and our R2 draw against the Tigers as it was in the Cats flogging which was the low point.

In terms of who we could afford, we were 1 of the suitors for Cameron and I doubt he'd have come cheap.

Has anyone talked about this on the pie site? With a photo like this, how can we not win a premiership?

could have given him a Pies' jacket to wear instead of the old Hawks one! Are we that broke?

PS - seems a good appointment

Comment from Mark Anderson suggests we were diligent in making this appointment - be interesting to know if others made it to interview stage....

“Following a thorough recruitment process, we look forward to welcoming Graham back to the club and watching our football department develop further under his leadership.”

So, another recruitment of a person to a role that is not the role they made their name in.
Its the Collingwood way after all.
Coach who has never been a head coach, or even had other club coaching experience.
A ruck coach who was a full time full forward throughout his career.....
I could go on.
But I doubt a thousand words would alter the rusted on’s perception that the club can do no wrong....

Clarkson, Simpson, Bomber, Hardwick, Choco all flag winners and who were never head coaches prior to their appointments.
Rocca was NOT a full time FF - he also rucked and played CHF.
Your point is moot.

Wright comes from the most successful club of the past 10 years under a Coach who will go down as one of the greatests - but none of this first hand experience in a ultra successful club environment is meaningful or impressive enough for you.
That's quite strange.

He didn’t retire but at the end of 1993 he developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome and lost a lot of weight.
It took him five weeks to get over the worst - a 12kg drop in weight, short-term loss of speech, loss of feeling in his legs and nine days in a wheelchair.
Nasty little bug.
I remember being pretty concerned Wrighty might have been finished when he was diagnosed.
I knew a guy who died from it around then. Another guy I know has had it since, and took a few years to die.

Luckily he had youth and the best medical advice. Always been a fan of him.

Clarkson coached a premiership in the SANFL
