Because he has been at War with the AFL over it

It’s yet another indication of Ed overreaching as President. The football department tax is an operational responsibility not board. The only involvement the board should have is rubber stamping a decision by the CEO and CFO to pay the tax. IMO, a lot of people are in for a shock when he steps down and we come to know what a real president is like.

Operationally I’m neither here nor there over Wright’s appointment. It’s a win over the Maxwell/ Wagner combo, but Hawthorn’s football department hasn’t exactly been firing on all cylinders for the better part of 5 years.

Where I think we’ll see a significant improvement is fan engagement with the football department. Walsh would probably have preferred having teeth pulled over being honest with us whereas Wright has always been forthcoming in a Hine sort of way. Given that was our biggest failure during the 2020 off-season this is a step forward.

That all said if he can eke out an improvement in our rehab and coaching programs (ball movement specifically) then I’ll very quickly be as glowing as the majority on here. With that it’s a collaborative effort so any improvements will be a shared responsibility, but a new perspective on things can bring about positive change.

Yep, Wright featured on a regular Hawk Trade podcast with a journalist, which is much more than we became accustomed to. Even though he was probably lying through his teeth some of the time (saying "it isn't likely" they'd be landing Phillips "at this time" etc.) it would definitely be refreshing if we get some more transparency as fans next trade period.

Having had your bitch how about getting back on subject??

I follow the Lions fairly closely, as a former SEQ resident. Fagan is a beauty. His side plays great attacking footy and they genuinely love their coach. It's hard to quantify it, but there's no doubt he played a role in Hawthorn's success.
No doubt about it. He and the current leadership at the club have turn the Lions around. Great credit too them.

Probably should have won the Brownlow in 1990

Was a seriously good player. Without checking, must have lost a lot of votes to Brown Millane Daicos Shaw Russell McGuane and Francis.
Still, Libba did his knee, so it was a great effort for him to win it.

Winners didn't get many votes in those days. The votes were always much more shared around. I think Libba won with 18 Wright second with 17 .

talking football department spend and who should be deciding on it is pretty relevant to the appointment of a footy boss if you ask me...

We don't yet know if this was a good, poor or indifferent appointment. And we won't for some time.

Good luck to him, though. At least he's spent a significant period of his professional life outside of the Collingwood 'bubble'.

Looking forward to seeing what a new voice/pair of eyes (who has been a part of serious success) brings to the table.

Wright was an amazing player. Fast, skillful, with a freaky vertical leap. He owned the wing.

I too had heard that he wasn't a great fan of Buckley when he first arrived at the club from Brisbane. Clearly, it's not a big issue even if true.

Change for the sake of it isn't great but we need a reboot. This could work very well for the club just don't expect miracles to occur overnight.

Ahh the smell of organised governance, nnnffff............... smells wonderful doesn't it. Finally the cleaners are coming in and ridding the place of that stale 'same as always' odor.

The club has a look of a revamp from the top down, it may not guarantee success, but it may give us a better chance and at least if there is change where there was none then....... nothing would've changed.

From the outside it looks like it wants to match the administration to the club profile. I likey!

My hope now is for a fresh smell in the coaches box.................. whether the likes of Harves, Sando and Bucks change / improve their ways or are replaced by those who will. Probably asking for a bit much now............... I'll see myself out.

In this role he sits above Bucks in the hierarchy. It may have been a different story if he was to sit below him.

And what a leap. I still remember him when he first played forward, taking off from two feet and still getting much higher than everyone.

So many are so desperate to see the back of Buckley they will snatch at any straw . . .

Pathetic really.

On face value it may seem that way, many are just frustrated and want success and being head coach is part of the gig, being scrutinised by the fan base.

I'm going to dare to dream and hope like hell this pushes Bucks to flag success this year. Of course this is fantasy (even though possible) and I doubt ANY Pie fan would begrudge that fantasy.

I honestly can't remember, but I wonder if Gubby Allen's arrival was greeted with similar enthusiasm before it all came crashing down?
His success at Hawthorn was as a recruiter and then list manager. God knows if he'll be a top football manager. To me the best news about the appointment is that he chose us and what that says about his view of our list. I don't think he'd head anywhere with a list that he didn't think was going to go well over the next 5 years.

This is Cwood - we do thank you sir!

Some of the theories I have read today (that Wright has only agreed to come back to Collingwood because Eddie is leaving, or that Wright is coming on condition that Bucks is gone by the end of the season so Clarkson can replace him)....are bordering on the ridiculous.

The Eddie one would not surprise me.

2 I can think of is Hawks and Richmond

Wasn't aware they'd exceeded it. Thought the only clubs to do that were the WA clubs in the 1st year or 2.
