My partner and I have made the big decision to go to this year's Grand Final... we figure that him being a Crows Supporter and myself being an Eagles supporter, at least one of our teams should be playing in it. It's also his 21st birthday two days after the game so I thought a stay in Melbourne - even if neither of our teams are in the grand final - would be fun.

Basically I wanted to make a thread where we can all exchage advice on the best places to stay, cheapest ways to travel, best method of getting hold of tickets etc.

Here's some stuff that I've found that may be of value:

For those wanting to take the train, it seems like the Indian Pacific is the way to go... I have done the Adelaide-Perth journey on the Indian Pacific and it wasn't great (gotta love having gastro on a 2.5 day train trip!).

The Indian Pacific leaves every Sunday at 11. 55am from Perth, and arrives in Melbourne on the Wednesday (early evening). I wouldn't recommend going back on the train, it only leaves Melbourne for Perth on Saturday mornings, and that would mean spending at extra week in Melbourne.

The cost of a student trip (just in the seats, not in the cabins) is $220. Adults are a fair bit more $410. There are also concession prices (these are all one-way tickets btw). If you want a cabin, this will pretty much cost you big-bucks - the cheapest cabin is $636 student price, or over a grand adult price.

I'm taking the Overland train as I live in Adelaide, only costs us $49 ea as we're students.

As for flying, there are still quite a few flights available it seems... Adelaide to Perth (the crappy red-eye flights) are going for about $168 at the cheapest (one-way) which isn't too bad, although I'd recommend booking quickly...

Perth - Melbourne flights: expect to pay around 400 bucks one-way minimum. If you leave on the Monday or Tuesday of the week before the grand final, there are still tickets left for $333, however, closer to the day (eg Thurs, Fri) they're between $500-700 one-way. Ironic that Perth-Melbourne flights suddenly get a lot cheaper ($270) after the 30th Sept ;)

Of course there's always the bus - if you want to go through days and days of hell.

As for accommodation, you could either find a Melbourne buddy from Bigfooty and stay with them (absolutely not recommended). However, most of us have some sense about us and will prefer to fork out a few hundred quid rather than live with some of the queer folk that reside on this site.

I haven't really looked much at accommodation yet, I think the MCG is pretty much in the heart of Melbourne so I'll definately be choosing a hotel/motel in the CBD. www.wotif.com is pretty good at finding the best-priced hotels but it can only tell you the prices and availability of them if you're planning to go there in 28 days or under time. I'm a bit scared at leaving it till the last minute, so I'm going to keep looking around on the net.

I'd also recommend booking on the net as it tends to be a fair bit cheaper.

As for purchasing tickets - I'm still working on that one. Every club is allocated a certain number of tickets for it's members, regardless of who's playing, so one idea is that if you know a (eg.) western bulldogs member, they may be able to get you some tickets without too much hassle.

If you're not a member of a competing team, you have ZERO chance of getting two tickets, let alone one! The only option would be to buy an expensive GF package!

I went last year and i think the eagles were allocated around 14,000 tickets. So as you can see 42,000 members into 14,000 doesn't go. If the eagles make it the only way you can be guaranteed a ticket is if you are a noteholder. As for all clubs receiving tickets they get 1000 each and usually on sell these to travel agents for sale as Grand Final packages.

So what kind of membership do you have to have? Would silver suffice or do you need captains club?

I have a normal membership but bought an unsecured note a few years ago. So when tickets go on sale for finals you'll see that noteholders are the only people that can buy tickets for the first hour, then all other members can buy tickets after that. Its got to do with a legal agreement with Indian Pacific Limited who used to own the Eagles. My advice is to find someone who is a noteholder and use thier membership to get your tickets... I Think around 10,000 members are noteholders... This also gives you the best chance of getting good seats...:thumbsu: :thumbsu:

aah yes the perks of noteholding...the satisfaction my mum got when she walked through the line at 9am past the all night campers

Ahh yes, I was one of those all night campers.... The final insult was when one of my mates was trying to get through on the phone from sydney and got thru on the first attempt whilst we were almost at the front of the line...

Anyhoo, *pats noteholder ticket* I won't be doing that again! :)

Cat_flying_high if you don't have a noteholder membership your only option is to camp out. Last year people starting leaving the adelaide game at half time to start queing....

Danm... the first year since 1996 that I haven't had a membership and I'm off to the Grand final... oh well. Camping out it is, I guess... unless I can find someone with a membership who can help me out!

You need a membership to buy the tickets, so even camping out wont help you, I could be wrong but I am sure thats how it was last year.

Yep thats right, no membership no ticket...as I said unless you're a member of a competing team you WILL NOT GET A TICKET!

Yeah, it's alright though cos I've got access to my Dad's eagles memberships and my boyfriend's uncle's crows memberships so hopefully we'll get tickets somehow. are premium eagles tickets enough to secure grand final tickets?

Ummm... Dont know if you've noticed but its August...

All that has to happen in September is to have 1 bad day and there is no accommodation, ticket ot travel tips happening!

Fingers crossed though.

Of course I know it's august... I know it's a gamble to take, but if you leave it till the last minute you've got no hope of finding accommodation unless you want to pay $400 a night plus.

There's no rank order of who gets access to grand finals tickets once the note holders have theirs. Basically the note holders have their own line and get the opportunity to buy tickets 1 hour or so before all other members. After that it doesn't matter if you've got a premium, standard or budget membership, it's whoever is first in the line.

The fact that I live in adelaide now might hinder my lining up for eagles tickets... so I'll probably have to try and call and pray that I get through!

I may sound simple, but what the hell is a note holder? And how does one go about holding one of these notes?

I might not be spot on, but I think notes are kind of like shares, because when Indian Pacific used to own the Eagles it was like, you could buy into the company... Something like that.
There were only a few thousand available I think, and somehow we got hold of 4, but I think they're slightly more valuable now than they were when we got them.
Like somebody has already said, being a noteholder just gives you priority when trying to get finals tickets.
How would you get one? I dunno, maybe E-Bay?

I went to the Grand Final last year and these were the steps i took (providing your a member)

Step 1 "Get Tickets"

Couldn't be bothered lining up, took a chance on the phone, Got through about 11.00 am after 2 hours of redial.

Step 2 "Find reasonably priced Plane Flight"

Scoured the net and eventually found a return flight ($700 return) to Adelaide leaving Wednesday and returning on the Thursday after. Had a hire car waiting at the airport and did some great sightseeing on the way back from Melbourne to Adelaide

Step 3 "Accomadation"

Scoured the net again, Found a cheap hotel about 15km out of Melbourne CBD for $50 a night.

BTW

Friday parade day is a must. The Young & Jackson (think thats the name) across from Victoria station was a hoot that afternoon/evening as well. Hic

Young & Jackson is across the road from Flinders Street and opposite Federation Square is that where you meant?

I lined up in Melbourne, the queues weren't too bad but I managed to get through on the phone right on the dot of 9am! Then I passed my phone around to some other people we had met in line and they all purchased tickets and gave me cash for using my phone :D
