Greatest Player not to go number 1......and worst to have been.

When Gibbs is delisted in two years he will go down as the worst number 1 pick ever (well most overated anyway).

Combine the courage of bryce gibbs with the skills of michael wilson and you'd have a champion footballer. Like combining the loyalty of a cat with the cleanliness of a dog.

waterhouse is a legend! Best docker ever! If he didnt play for freo imagine how good he could of been

Besides Ablett, i haven't seen a more freakier footballer. Clive did some amazing things in games and was awesome to watch. Too bad it was only ever in small bursts whereas Ablett did it every week!

1999 saw the recruiting of Adelaide Crows star full forward, Tony Modra to Fremantle. Modra and Waterhouse would make a dangerous pairing for the following two seasons, combining for over 100 goals each year. Waterhouse played all bar one game and finished 3rd in the best and fairest award in those two seasons before injuries took their toll from 2001 onwards. He also represented Australia in the International rules series against Ireland in 1999. Round 21, 2000 would be Waterhouse's greatest on-field moment. In the infamous Demolition Derby against West Coast, Waterhouse sparked a last half comeback from being 42 points behind 6 minutes into the 3rd quarter. His career high 7 goals earned him 3 Brownlow Medal votes and helped Fremantle to their greatest ever comeback to win by 1 point.

Wearing Guernsey number 26 from throughout his AFL career, he was the first player to score 100 goals for Fremantle. He retired with 178 goals, a then-club record (until Matthew Pavlich surpassed this in 2006).

the reason why james hird wasnt picked until 75odd is the fact he missed both u18's carnivals with injury and being from canberra it was a big thing to see how he would compete against decent opposition

That still doesn't change the fact that he is the greatest non-number 1 pick!

I think you can dismiss every draft prior to about 1993 (or a bit earlier) as it was a lotto. It wasn't until about 1998 or so when the draft became the #1 source of players and became so heavily scruitinised.

Agree with this. In the early nineties the draft was still in it's infancy and clubs hadn't as yet cottoned on how to utilise it. Also needs to be remembered in those days there was no U/18 competition and clubs could and did spot players and hide them, something thats much harder to achieve these days. So it's not as though in those days the draft was the complete mecca for all the top end talent anyway.

I also think it's a bit rude to be potting players simply because they didn't go on to play 400 games and kick 1000 goals.. Banik was a very skillful player who was forced to retire at a young age due to illness. By the time he was over CFS he was too old to make a come back. Hutton was also a very gifetd player but he was an Adrian McAdam type, not a KPP. Unfortunately dut to the Bears lack of any decent forwards back then bar Merrett, he was forced to play out of position and it hindered him.

Peter Matera went pick 4 in the 1988 Draft before him were three players I never heard of!

Dean Kemp and Brett Heady went in the 100's in the 89' draft as well I remember.

Matera could be considered the best not to go number one, but listing Dean Kemp and Brett Heady in the same sentence as him is a joke.
Kemp was solid for many years but should not be mentioned in the same bracket as Matera.

Matera was the better player, but Dean Kemp was an out and out superstar in his own right.

- WCE Rookie of the Year in 1990 (same year Matera debuted)
- 1992 Premiership
- 1992 Club Champion
- 1994 Premiership
- 1994 Norm Smith
- Eagles tem of the decade.
- AFL Hall of Fame.

Not a flashy ball carrier like Peter Matera but an outstanding ball winner.

This is me mentioning Dean kemp in the same bracket as Peter Matera.

Im understandig what you're saying.
What I said was Matera >> Kemp >>>>>>>>>Heady.

To me, Matera = Judd, Kerr, Cousins (insert other freakishly skilled players)
Kemp = Braun, Stenglein (insert other consistent, solid players)

Matera nearly won the Brownlow twice, and he also won a Norm Smith, kicking 5 goals off the WING.

If i was making a team and i needed to choose between Matera and Kemp, I know who I would pick.

lofl at Freo's draft that year. Had about 4 top 30 picks, 2 of them didnt get a game and one got about 8, Waterhouse was a gun, but didn't have a very long career.

Goddard will prove a few doubters wrong this season, would have last year if he didnt do his knee.
