First thing's first, Inglis would prefer to retire a League player, more to the point a Storm player.

But.

- Inglis's manager Alan Gainey has contacted people involved with AFL this week after the Israel Folau news broke, just to feel out what interest there would be in his player (relevant to my final dot point). There were reports of managers of NRL players contacting the AFL regarding 12 players during the week, mainly due to scarmongering for renewing their own NRL deals. Either way, Inglis we're lead to believe was one of those 12 players.

- Israel Folau talked about getting involved with AFL living in Melbourne for two years being one of the motivations for the switch. Greg Inglis has become a much bigger AFL fan than Folau ever was, really embracing the code, he had a kick of the Sherrin almost every week at Visy Park after training. His youtube video is just scraping the surface.

- At this point let's remind ourselves of some of Greg's quotes from just under 12 months ago:

“To be honest, I wouldn't mind having a crack (at AFL), I played a few games when I was in high school but that was about it.

“You never know what happens in the future, look at what happened to Karmichael, he signed and that was a shock.

“You don't know what the future brings, you know if the opportunity's there then we'll definitely have a look but I can't promise anything at the moment.

“All I can say now is I'm still with Melbourne until 2012.''

- The interesting thing regarding that last quote is that Inglis and his team are now seriously considering the switch if the Storm team requires dismantling at season's end. If the Storm never rorted the cap, this would be less of a story. But because they did, the AFL has come into the picture big time for Greg.

The option from camp Inglis is that if the Storm need to lose Inglis, or if Inglis going would go a long way to ammending their cap situation 2011 on, Greg will heavily weigh up the AFL offers which by then will be concrete and deadly serious. Essendon for one have already had semi-serious internal meetings re: Inglis and had informal conversations with Gainey too.

These will ramp up now there has been some communication between the AFL and Gainey. Remember, Greg would be singed to Hunt/Folau kind deals, he'd be a rookie, with a lot of promotional money, and a relatively manageable capable cap hit (300kish, pure estimate).

- The unconfirmed theory, and the real interesting one for mine, the reason for this thread, is that the preliminary thoughts from Camp Inglis is that if next year Inglis can't be a Storm player, he wants to play AFL in Melbourne. I concede I can't confirm that, so take it for what it's worth.

Inglis is close to the best player in the NRL. I think recent polls voted him the best.

He and Billy Slater are the two players I think could be A grade in AFL. He would be a huge signing and an even bigger slap in the face to the NRL.

He would have to slim down a bit though. He carries a little bit.

Just a couple of points:
  • Why if he signed with a Melbourne club would he receive any promotional money FROM THE AFL...surely promotion of the game in Victoria is going along just fine
  • All of those league players lining up for a piece of the pie should realise that there is going to be a law of diminishing marginal returns from each additional league player that switches (economist jargon for the first one is the most valuable, others decreasingly so)

Therefore I just can't see clubs being able to pay over the odds to the extent that has occurred for Hunt & Folau when the cost is not being heavily subsidised by the AFL under the guise of marketing budget.

When this is stripped away all that will be left will be normal player payments and it will really cause a player revolt if an Essendon (for instance) paid big bucks for GI leaving other current players out in the cold.

How old is he?
That was my first thought as well.

Turns out he's about 23 now (same age as Hunt), but if he made the switch in 2012 he's going to be 24 and would then need time in the reserves before playing, making it likely he wouldn't be able to play at AFL level until around age 25.

Compared to Hunt, just started his training and may be able to debut at about 24.

In all honesty, it probably comes down to how easily Hunt and Folau make the transition than how old he is. If they can make the change in < 6 months (unlikely but possible) then I'd say it's possible for Inglis to make the transition. If they take more than a year, I'd be inclined to think Inglis is better off sticking to League or making the transition to Union.

Talking completely out of my arse here though.

EDIT: Turns out the two were only born 2 months apart, that's what I get for only looking at the year of birth and not the month as well.

Glad to see you're so interested in the superior athletes of the NRL
Inferior complex much?

The simple facts are that there are elite athletes across both codes. there'd be more in the AFL simply due to different skill sets in each game. A lot of front rowers are average athletes whereas in AFL you need to be an athlete.

At the top end it's a muchness of a muchness. For every Hayne, Inglis, Slater there is a Natanui, Franklin, Judd.

You are spot on with your comment about diminishing returns for future players BUT the rule won't apply for three players- Inglis, Slater and Hayne. One of these players jumping ship will rock the NRL more than Folau and Hunt combined. It hurts the league and it affects their precious State Of Origin.

Demetriou would pay the millions, no doubt- and is the only reason I will pay any attention to Brad Scotts comments of yesterday. If North could lure Inglis (on the AFL's coin) for example, things just change for my club, positively obviously.

Spot on!!!! If 1 of those 3 came over, the NRL will be rocked to its core. The amount of media would double IMO what has been generated through Hunt and Folau...combined. Getting Hayne will lead to mass riots as he is Sydney based but irrespective, any of the 3 will lead to Gallop at the very least getting the boot for his inaction to do anything.

i think hayne is the key for the afl trying to **** the nrl

slater and inglis just turn it into an us v them mentality which they love

but if one of their beloved home grown superstars leaves shit will go crazy

Personally, it would be awesome to see all these great NRL superstars such as GI, Slater, Smith, Heyne etc at AFL level, however, as a Storm fan, I would love to see GI stay there and become an all-time great.

Whilst Izzy will always be remembered as a Storm premiership superstar, he switched code as a Broncos player so his defection is more acceptable for mine, being a Storm fan.

It would be a bitter blow to the Melbourne Storm brand moreso than the NRL, if players such as GI, Slater, Smith etc switched codes at the most important period in the club's history.

My first thouht was too old adn my second was that he wouldn't get near the salary he get at an NRL club. I was surprised to read that he's only 23 though. The only big issue with a club giving him a crack would be the salary cap space he'd soak up becasue I couldn't see him taking much of a pay cut - if any. That said, a club like Richmond or Melbourne might fit him in the cap if the rest of their list got market salaries. A lot of poorer performing clubs over pay players because the cap gives managers a baseis for leverage whereas it gives clubs a basis for leverage at better performed clubs.

Aside from that, I would think the AFL would have to allow some sort of rookie list option for players recruited from other professional sports and offer some sort of cap discount for their continuing salaries for at least 3 or 4 years.

Could you imagine the NRL angst if the AFL introduced a professional sport switch rookie list and cap concessions?

They could call it a Competitive Upgrade like McAfee or Norton. Chage antivirus, you get a 50% discount. Change code and you get a 50% discount of your salary going onto your club's cap.

Sounds like a great idea.

Inglis would be good at the Dees.

Wouldn't most of his salary be outside the salary cap anyway, given the same loophole that GC signed Karmichael Hunt under - unsure of the precise ruling, but something about him being a elite level athlete being poached from outside the AFL system?

i.e. I thought they already had a rule like MarkT2 suggests for poached players.

You are correct in that, that's what many people are failing to grasp.
