I knew a bloke who used to barrack for Fitzroy, then started supporting North when Fitzroy merged with Brisbane. I bet a few disgruntled Fitzroy supporters turned their backs on the merger and supported someone else.
They should have just moved to Queensland in 1987 and just called themselves "The Lions". Would have went over better I think with it being the same squad and branding, just playing interstate more. Maybe call themselves Fitzroy when playing in Victoria, that would have been better than a merger losing everything.

Yeah, supported the Swans as a kid, Plugger was my favourite player, Kelly my second.

But when the Bears became the Lions I got on their bandwagon, never looked back since.

I still like the Swans and I like Freo too, being the underdog battler little bro WA team yet to win a flag.

Also like the Crows and Port (yes even though that 2004 GF hurt).

And the Suns and Giants, pretty much prefer all non Vic teams.

I get behind the Eagles if they play finals but can never back them or Freo over Brissy. The one team I wouldn’t mind the Lions losing a GF to is them though.

Tassie will be one of my favourites if they come in, I’m sure for a lot of others, too.

On a whim I decided to go for the Eagles after watching on telly when they played their first game, where they ran down the Tigers in the last quarter at Subiaco for a famous win. I was 13. I barely got away with it. I did jump around teams when I was younger though, I even went for the NZ cricket team for a couple of years in the mid 80s.

Anyway, for some unknown reason people would ask me why I went for an interstate team. I would point out that we're Tasmanian and they're all interstate teams. No one in my neck of the woods followed Tasmanian football outside of the local stuff. So you'd have your country footy team and your VFL team. If they end up spaffing a billion dollars on that nonsensical stadium in Hobart they'll probably base the team there and that will make it very easy not to follow them, so maybe no hard choices in my future coming up.
Surely you’re loyal to Craggy Island over 75s five-a-side?

I was a dedicated RFC fan from late 60s until the recent run, a member for much of that time. I was fortunate enough to see in person most if the Hafey flags. I have now switched allegiance (mostly) to a new club, who I support financially as I believe in the national growth plan, and I like the western suburbs. I have lived abroad since 93, so I don't have such a strong parochial streak any longer. I get joy from most close games, espesh underdogs winning. I was literally off my sofa watching Hawthorn beat a premiership fave this round. Watching Giants beat Swans was incredibly satisfying. I'm looking forward to Blues Dons today, I really like the young Dons players despite despising the club...go figure.

I was pretty dark when Clarko gave our B&F winner Mitchell his marching orders. Along with 2nd placed Lewis. And what did it achieve, absolutely nothing.
but, the most successful club in the last 65 years of the game?

I was a Demons supporter by birth, because Dad barracks for them, but as soon as I could choose for myself, I went for North.

Then Nicky Winmar lifted his jumper one day at Collingwood and said how proud he was of who he was reagrdless of small minded taunting. That was it for me, whoever he played for was my team from then on.

I did as a ~14 year old. I was so tired of seeing Richmond crap that I switched to Sydney at the beginning of 2005. Richmond then started winning a lot of games so I switched back after only 10 games of “supporting” Sydney. Richmond were top 4 at the time and Sydney was out of the 8. From the time I switched back, Richmond became crap again and Sydney ended up winning the Premiership.

I haven’t switched teams again after that.

On the idea of letting children choose their own club, do you let young kids choose to eat nothing but junk food or not go to school?

My kids hate me for it, but they had to choose between Essendon or being homeless.

Surely, you want people like this to switch out if they followed your club:

Modern society is so strange...I can just see it now...

"They can choose their own gender, but I'll be damned if ny kid of mine will support another club!"

No. and have little respect for anyone who does. If youve done it once you'll do it again. Like kids who change schools. First time they're unhappy at the new one - guess what they want.

No and I would never think about switching.

I never got a choice in who I supported, mum is north so being the girl I had to go for north. Same for my brother, Dad is Collingwood so my brother goes for Collingwood.

I think when it’s family tradition, it means more to me (if that makes sense)

I do enjoy going to Collingwood games with my dad, seeing him happy is mainly why lol and they play good footy.

Even though North haven’t been successful and have been spooners for the past 2 seasons, I wouldn’t change who I support for the world.

Any South Melbourne fans here, who didn't like The Sydney move that started supporting another club?
I knew some who switched teams or said they would follow Port Melb in the VFA. My mum switched to Richmond because my dad and most of my family were Tigers fans. But later she moved to Sydney to retire and she went back to being a Swans fan.
