Have you ever switched footy teams? Or have you always barracked for the same team?

I used to barrack for Collingwood in the AFL/VFL and Port Adelaide in the SANFL. The year before Port came into the AFL I contemplated switching to them and thought that technically it wouldn't make me a turncoat because I'd barracked for them in the SANFL. But when it came to the crunch I couldn't leave my beloved Pies.
Know a guy that grew up following Fitzroy then switched to West Coast when they merged with Brisbane. No, he had no ties to WA. Find that odd. If gonna support interstate team why not just support Brisbane Lions after all?

Was he down the beach, groping sand a lot?

Twice, sort of.

Being a Central District supporter in the SANFL, John Platten was my childhood hero. When he went to Hawthorn I started a loose following of them.
When the Crows entered the AFL I decided that as there was now a South Australian team I'd get behind them.
I never really considered myself a supporter as such but wanted them to win and watched them occasionally.

Then Port entered in 97 and I finally felt like I had a team, that Adelaide won the 97 and 98 flags made me question my decision and whilst I was happy for their success, I knew Port was where my allegiances should be.
It helps that I didnt follow the Port Magpies as I never got drawn into the controversy over the Crows entry so I can still appreciate a crows win, unless its a showdown.
I like that we're a small club steeped in tradition and success from the SANFL that earnt its spot in the big league.
That didnt need to be created from scratch for that purpose and have reached the pinnacle.
A true underdog that can trouble the best clubs on a regular basis.

What percentage of the Port AFL side's support base would consist of non Port Adelaide Magpies fans? I assumed it was a very small percentage but it seems like there's a few others around here.

I switch teams every year.

I usually follow 2-3 different teams each season.

AFL no.
NRL. I grew up a North Sydney Bears supporter. Which is why I am an Essendon supporter. The Bears were red and black so when I became interested in AFL as a kid I jumped on the red and black. The Bears merged with Manly in 2000 to become the Northern Eagles (A few years later the Northern Eagles reverted to just Manly). I could never support such a monstrosity so decided to follow Canterbury as they had always been my second team but I've never felt as passionately about them as I did the Bears. There has a been a lot of talk recently about the Bears being given the green light to re-enter the NRL and I would have no hesitation in supporting them again.

no, im genuinely curious. I must have completely missed reasons unbeknown to me

pm me if you want

Without going into massive detail whilst everyone assumes it was purely for the ASADA thing it wasn’t. At the time my sister was quite ill and the Swans did heaps for her during her time of need it was actually more this than the other factor. Luckily she’s fine now but at the time she was quite unwell

Hawks are my team. But doing some part time work for the AFL and my wife going for Carlton I do go to alot of non-Hawthorn games.

Lived in Adelaide for 3 years. Port were my 'liked' team when living over there.

If Gold Coast make the finals they would be one that I or many others that support bottom 10 sides would hope they do well.

They didn't switch teams, but I know a couple of ex-bombers fans who just became neutral fans of the game after the drug saga.

Yea I know a couple too, but they were interstate supporters. They’ve kinda switched to clubs of their home state. I can understand it and there’s probably a number of former Bomber supporters who have switched.
