Greg Inglis is seriously considering switch

Wouldn't AFL wanna pull the breaks now. If they get too many stars coming through wouldn't it have a diminishing effect, especially if one comes to Melb.

Well the only real positive buzz that it's creating is in melbourne. Sure there is talk in Sydney but it's not the same. It's not like every person wants to chat about, every local personality wants to have a say about it. In Sydney as much as there is this train of though these days that any publicity is good publicity there is more a feeling of hate towards the code than curiosity.

So really the result has been good from a marketing POV in melbourne where it's created this big hype..all good if melbourne was the critical market.

If anything they need to use a current day player who has switched in his junior days from league to afl and made a successful transition. Who better than to be an ambassador up north for cross code promotion than Kieren Jack? It might be seen as promoting the swans in a way BUT with some clever marketing and spin it can be done without having to mention the swans once. And he is the son of a former great!!

His story and who he is and what he is becoming at the swans would be so logical. But i don't expect logic to come out of the AFL.

Doesn't ring true.

One week out of the world cup, and the nationwide sports coverage for Folau is ten times what the Socceroos are getting.

What would the Bombers have to pay him per year?

Vlad is happy to have Essendon approach inglis to promote AFL in NSW im sure a little extra money incentive in the cap will suffice, The AFL are keen to talk to the Eagles about NICNAT promoting AFL in the Pacific as well, what about Port, Rodan is from the Pacific islands. all the clubs can recruit a player from any where to recieve extra salary cap incentives Carlton has 2 Tasmanian recruits does this Suffice. Man im confused.

Update for you.

Where I thought it would be only if the Storm had to cut Greg that he would then seek out AFL, it seems Greg's camp is offering to leave the Storm for AFL to free up their cap.

So instead of it being the Storm advising Greg they can't keep him, Greg is prepared to potentially offer to leave to alleviate the cap issue.

A lot of smoke here.

Very, very interesting if true.

If essendon get him for free i'd be very pissed simply because I don't like them, he has the potential to be a superstar in our game which I doubt the other 2 will be close 2.

Please oh please let it be Richmond or north that picks him up.

I think the NRL experiment is greedy but good at the same time.

Greedy because the precident has been set with Karmichael and Izzy... so all clubs will expect to beable to recruit a NRL player for 300,000 a year and the AFL throw in 800,000 a year like they are now...

but I think it is good because in 10 years time, when there are 30 NRL players on AFL lists and it is costing the AFL upwards of 20m a year... finally that will be enough to get rid of Dimwitreo!

Kerry Packer once famously said of Alan Bond when the latter massively paid over the odds for acquiring Ch 9 and then resold the network back to Packer for a pittance - “You only get one Alan Bond in your lifetime. And I've had mine.”

I think a few NRL player agents are saying to themselves "You only get one Andrew Demetriou in your lifetime. We better make hay while the sun shines."

Actually, I think that their player managers have struck gold. It is more a case of Andy D being their second John O'Neill. For years The Daily Terror's back pages are filled with "Player X will now go and play Rugby unless he gets $X00,000". Now Player X will play Rugby or Aussie Rules unless he gets $X00,000 * 2.

Such is the quality of the DT that these speculative stories get eight times as much coverage as substantive Swans stories, for instance, but that is a whinge for another day.

Doubt it will happen even if he is forced to leave the Storm. Are Essendon really gonna chew up $300,000 in there salary cap on a player who has not even proved he can play the game.

You're kidng yeah? 300k to a club who has the strongest book base in terms of financials and assets in the league, and without wasting a vital draft pick. Its a no brainer. Dare I say it, IF the opportunity came up, it would be completely negligent for the EFC not to go down that path.

What im more interested in is how other clubs are allowing Essendon to toot its horn out there, with the AFL saying theyd hand us a gift of cash for the experiment. Wouldnt poorer clubs be saying: "hang on a minute.. why should they be getting their foot in the door first""..

Im not a fool I understand the marketing concept behind it. Take a player from the NRL who will actually have NRL followers eyes on him when hes in the AFL, work it so he plays for a club with big sponsorship deals (Samsung) big games & big crowds, adds to the glory perception of others watching from the outside, with the view to strengthen particularly Western Sydney but also the Gold Coast. Its quite a genius move really when you think about it. Either way, IF it happened, and IF it failed, and IF Essendon did recruit him, we'd lose nothing from the venture anyway. Big tick.

typical BF mentality. Maybe those clubs should have, you know, actually come up with the idea, rather than trying to ride the coat-tails of the innovative thinkers.

We get this every single year around Anzac day time for example...

Can the Bombers field 21 AFL standard players plus Inglis?

Will you want to be allowed to field 23?

Can see what the Bombers want out of an Inglis deal, but what are you prepared to put up ... nothing methinks !!

I not questioning whether you can pay the money. It's the $300,000 off the salary cap that is the huge risk. That is one player who you know is capable playing that you now can't fit in your salary cap.

Irish experiments and other non pro sports people come at a base salary cost under the cap. The risk is no higher than a rookie draft selection. Inglis isn't gonna leave league for a rookie salary. Even if the AFL are going to pay promotional money it won't be the amount Hunt and Folou are getting without other clubs kicking up a huge stink.
