Round 10

(still season 31)

By this stage of the season, we had managed to fight our way to a 5 and 5 record and we were coming up against a top 8 Wonder's outfit. The middle of the table was pure congestion with lots of teams fighting it out for the 6 remaining spots in the top 8. This was our chance to join them and to stamp our credentials that we were a top 8 worthy team.

It might have been a case of a winners hangover but we let the Wonders kick out to an early lead of 2 goals before a steadier by forward stalwart Rodney Dangerfield got us on the board. The good news ended there as the oppo kicked away again with such ease that we wondered if any of our defense had gotten off the bus?! It took until the 23rd minute before we scored our second goal but the damage had already been done. We ended the quarter down by 25!

Talk about a flurry of activity to start the second quarter. In the first minute, there were 2 goals and 2 behinds scored. This quarter, for each goal we scored, the Wonders always hit back so we were hitting the scoreboard but just not stopping the Wonders! It was a stalemate of sorts until our kicking yips spiked and we let them kick further ahead. This was turning ugly and it was only the second quarter. Wonders up by 35 at the half! Almost junk time already, or was it?? Anything can happen in this game.

The third quarter looked a little more positive as we manaegd to quell the Wonder's attacks and score a few of our own goals on the rebound. We started looking like a team again rather than allow the first half laziness to continue! It was our turn to assault the goals this time with a peppering of efforts. The 3rd quarter was a total turn-around to the first 2 as we finished only 5 down! A huge goal haul was ours and the momentum had swung in our direction. It was time to put the foot down.

It took just under 2 minutes for a BlueE goal to put us in front! It's happening folks. A Barrybran goal barely 30 seconds later signalled our intent and the Wonders were stunned. They had just coughed up their 35 point lead at the half to trail by 9 3 minutes into the 4th quarter. A massive choke was on the cards. From there it was all but done and dusted, we had momentum and the fitness to see out the game. We just had to thwart a few feeble attempts at a comeback but it was all ours with a few junk goals to Genghis Tron and Brick Loosener. Rodney Dangerfield didn't want to feel left out so he kicked a few junk goals too. This was a mammoth effort. The game had gone from us being down by 35 to us winning by 34!

Gumbies by 34 and into the top 8.

Qootiers of note: I bobbed up with one of my better performances for the year along with Barrybran, Spuddd, Jivlain.

Inidividually, I picked up the Gumbies' first beez Trophy and second Frankston Rover award and GWS Goose claimed the club's fifth Mobbs Medal. The dominant half back flank combination of Lingua Ignota and omgfridge were named as the half back flanks in the All-SFA side in recognition of a fantastic season on and off the park.
