Missed a year with a range of niggling injuries (hamstrings and back). Then last year after Mumford went down he was named to play against North the following week after tearing it up in the NEAFL all year, but had to pull out on the Friday with another niggling back. Only missed a week, but in that week Downie did enough in the NEAFL to get the call up for the following week and then did enough at seniors to keep his spot.

So a small injury at the absolute worst possible time stuffed him. Otherwise he would have been the number 1 ruck for the second half of the year.

Always been very bullish on the big Sauce. Better than a lot of people think. Will be very good if he can get a clear run at it.

Agree 100%, was not happy we gave him away

Thanks Ichabod Noodle :thumbsu:

It's not often you see someone you didn't know much of, make such an impression from the get-go.
Hasn't missed a beat yet and does just about everything well.............very well, actually. May be another 'Sauce' type of story.
Early days but he's been by far the most impressive of the ex-GWS boys..........doesn't help that Plowman & Sumner are in the rehab group, I guess. :)

Hi guys and a quick question:

Been watching Phillips at training and he looks to be the real deal athletically and through general play.
Is there anything that held him back other than Mumford? In other words, was there a knock on Phillips or just opportunity that held him back?
Mostly just opportunity. He lost a year of development in 2013 to a hamstring tendon injury, and this year injured his back at training the week after Mumford went down, thus losing the first shot at the ruck role for the remainder of the season (that's not to say he's injury prone). Certainly a solid prospect, just hadn't set himself apart from Downie and Lobb up here and could take advantage of a fresh challenge.

If you can access it, have a look at our game this season just gone against the bombers. Was has best game for us and will give you a glimpse of his potential.

I'm bummed that we lost him, and hope he makes a go of it at the blues.

While I don't rate the NEAFL as the best indicator, a few weeks after Goldstein had his 80 hit-out record against us, Sauce pulled a similar feat in the NEAFL.

Realistically he was going to be in the situation of competing with Downie for the second spot when both are ruckmen not true ruck-forwards or forwards who can ruck. While Mummy won't last forever, one of those two would have missed out on the top gig and both are too good for NEAFL and are likely to have gone elsewhere.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sauce initiated the question of being traded because he has more of an opportunity to get clear air at this point in time and a decent crack at a regular first 22 spot.

Just curious if you think GWS would entertain the idea of say #1 & #19 for your #8(coll), #10(gws) & #13(geel)
Gee that would be dumb on your part.... Why the bloody hell would you pass up another number 1 to rebuild around? U got a franchise player this year.... U might get one next as well

We did that last rebuild and took kru, gibbs and murph and never anyone around them. id rather have 3 in the top 13-14 than pick 1. We've got Cripps and Weits and hopefully either mckay or curnow can hold up a forward post. just need to build around them
We won't want 1 for those picks because we have more academy options next year than we did this year. Those picks are more valuable to us as points then having the number 1
Yeah i was hoping there would be less academy players this year, ahwell good to know the view from your side. with so much talent i thought a pick 1 may have been more valuable.
