Two from many years ago:
Frank Tuck from Collingwood missed the 1953 & 1958 Magpie premierships through injury, but was in the beaten sides of 1952, 1955, 1956 & 1960.
East Perth player Derek Chadwick was the unlucky rookie to miss a place in their 1959 WAFL premiership. Chadwick then played in East Perth's losing Grand Final teams of 1960, 1961, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 & 1971. In 1972, Chadwick was injured late in the second semi final - and East Perth went on to win the Grand Final.
Many other posters nominated Derek Kickett, but he seems to receive little sympathy from Essendon fans. I tend to side with Kickett; if his form was a worry, why didn't Sheedy drop him to the Reserves for the Qualifying Final (Essendon played in the Reserves Finals in 1993) to regain some touch? Why wait until the Grand Final, where Kickett had played every game of the year to that point? The fact that Dean Wallis, who replaced Kickett in the Grand Final team, had played only 7 games for the year and none for weeks before that reflects badly on Essendon. It is not as though his place was taken by a regular senior player who had missed with a minor injury or illness the week before.
Something really bad happened to a mate of mine in amatuer football; he trained the house down all year, but was kept in the Reserves for the entire season (where he dominated). However, when the Reserves made the Grand Final, he was dropped, having played every match for the season to that stage.
