. . . so any update on when he's coming to Geelong?
My oh my. Seems like Harley didn't spend Christmas or holidays back in country Vic with his family.

Very unusual behaviour for a fella who was home sick during the season last year. Seems to me like Harley Reid grew up.

He's no longer home sick. He's just obsessed with Yaz. Whatever happens it will be Yaz/Harley making the decision together. Harley will go wherever Yaz goes

You should be deeply troubled going into 2025 if Harley doesn't once mention he was a Geelong supporter. He mentioned it all the time in 2024.

Why would you scrap the Academies? They're good for jnr pathways into AFL, particularly in remote areas.

You dont scrap them.

You just make access to the talent for all clubs and the AFL funds them. Which it does anyway along with sponsors who identify AFL junior develipment as a good space to invest sponsorship dollars.

Clubs can get paid for any support they provide.

Not a difficult change to make. Would end the shenanagins compromising the draft.

Problem is clubs seem too selfinterested to agree to that system. Development without access to clubs knowledge and staff just seems infinitely harder.

The other way to make it fair is every club gets an academy. All get access to any player they develop and there is a better points curve to keep talent levels balanced

Personally I like an auction system.
Set it as teams get an amount of points based on their dominance that year.

Ie if you finish with a point differential of 0 and win 1/2 your games you get 2000 points. If you win 20 games with a point differential of say 15 you get 700 points and if win 1 game with a with a poor differential you get say 3500 points.

Teams have to draft 4 players. Clubs can’t re rookie players and teams can match academy bids with equal points.

From what I've heard, we are heavily into Reid. I think he will come to us for 2 top 5 picks and a young player and we'll get a second round pick in return.
Picks could also include future pick.
West Coast can use one of the picks to get Warner.
Love your positivity AP but I'm pretty sure every club will be heavily into him if his management puts the feelers out. Hope he stays

If you want fair compensation then Richmond has draft picks so Richmond are front runners at this stage.

That’s not how it works. Players pick the team they want to get traded too and the club losing them takes unders.

He might go Melbourne. If he wants to win he might ask to go to Brisbane. There’s still a lot to play out but teams having assets doesn’t matter all that much

No, but has he signed a contract extension?
He's not going to say he wants to leave when he has to spend 2 more years there.
Cool.

So with that in mind, why would he sign a contract extension with 2 years to run?

Please try using your brain before the hopium consumes it.

Just FYI none or almost none of the top 20 from the 2023 draft have signed longer contracts either.
This is just something managers get them to do to try to maximise their deal.
Likely has nothing to do with Harley still thinking about where he wants to play.

So you're confident he'll stay?
Who knows? I'm not privy to pretty much anything, considering I live in Qld and get news pretty much just from here but people with ties to the club say he's happy there, it's just the attention he was getting last year was somewhat off-putting.

That appears to have died down this preseason, so it should allow him to settle in properly.

Looks like a concerted effort from the club to shield him from the media attention, considering he was doing lots of interviews early and it all stopped around halfway through the season, mainly after the Talking Footy interview, where Watson kept banging on about him being homesick(which he's denied multiple times) and that he'd look great in a Geelong jumper.

He wouldn't get any less attention in Vic anyway.

The point is, of the top 10 taken in his draft, only Windsor and Read have extended.

Him not extending his contract, with 2 more years to run, isn't exactly strange.

Simpson himself, after being sacked, said he was confident Reid would re-sign, as did Witherden, who has the same manager.

Of course, things can change but he seems settled enough.

Obviously if he were to want out, then yes, Richmond would be the best option for WCE if they're willing to pony up 2x top 5 picks.

I feel that would be a mistake on Richmond's behalf though, because they have many list needs that simply won't have been addressed in last year's draft.

Also, if Reid himself has expressed a desire to be a part of a competitive team as quickly as possible, requesting a trade to Richmond, of all clubs, would go against that philosophy because they're going to be down for quite some time.

The Dons will be absolutely up to their necks in this trade.

Harley trained at Essendon and played in the VFL team prior to being drafted so knows the players already and also has the close connection with Duursma clan.

We will also have the draft capital (two first rounders plus 26 and 27 firsts) and the salary cap to facilitate.

I think a lot will hinge on if Warner nominates WC as it's an easier sell to the fan base.
