Given that he was offered a trade and there were no offers better than delist - probably says enough about our and other clubs opinion of the player.

Seems like a nice kid and great runner, just not that good at football.

If Hartung was that good, doesn't everyone think that another club would of bit during the trade period? Competition to pick him up would of guaranteed this.
....it is a contact sport and he in my view is not up it...caio, dont let the sliding door hit you on the arse on the way out..

I reckon most interested clubs would have known he was on the chopping block for us. So why waste a pick trading for him when you can pick him up for nothing as a DFA?

I don't care how good a player he is - I am glad that sooking, ducking prick isn't on our list.

I wonder whether Geelol would have won flags in 2009 & 2011 had we taken him at 6 and they took Thorp at 7.

The other thing I wonder is whether we are in the midst of some salary cap issues which started post 2015. Last year when we got rid of Mitchell and Lewis I thought maybe it was making way for the 2017 big fish. Now looking at it again and also with the retirement/trading of Hodge, delisting of Billy but keeping cheaper options like Willsmore, etc I wonder if the club is pushed to the brink on the cap and is the process of shedding to reign things back under control.

Billy’s million dollar contract would put us in the red?

.

How anyone is that surprised that Hartung got delisted baffles me. He had multiple opportunites and continuously showed glaring weaknesses. He had one trick which he never used. The real quality sides don't carry players like Hartung.

Stewart is VFL standard at most and Willsmore will never be AFL quality so I'd rather the club back in a younger rookie who has some potential.

Completely agree. I'm sorry to say he has nothing to offer except endurance, which is a complete waste if you can't make a decision or dispose the ball correctly.

Willsmore and Heatherly yes, but for whatever the faults if Miles, Vickery and Schoenmakers they still have good football brains.
Did you just claim Ty Vickery has a good football brain?

I think the Willsmore situation surprised so many bc it was widely perceived he was uncontracted for 2018.

Until two weeks ago, our stickied Contract Status thread listed him as contracted until the end of 2017 (although there was a footnote against his name:
"* Actual contract expiry unknown - expected/assumed to expire at the end of 2017.")

Similarly, AFL.com recently ran a news story about HFC's 5 uncontracted players, but edited that report the next day to make it about HFC's 4 uncontracted players. They originally included Dallas in the uncontracted group; then removed his name to correct the story.

If we'd understood he was contracted for 2018, the reaction to the delistings news would have been different.

I'm more surprised by what's happened with Stewart.

Obviously, he had a great rookie year in 2016.

Early this season, i was told by an ex-player with close club connections that the club loved how hard he went, and that they had high hopes. Sure, he didn't step up like Hardwick or Howe, when given his chances this year, but few do. He must have really disappointed the inner sanctum this season.

It wasn't really widely perceived that he was un-contracted - there have been numerous of us saying he was contracted prior to trade period and now after the delistings.

The 'why did Willsmore get kept by Hartung get delisted crowd' are obviously just used to playing sports sim games with the salary cap function turned off.

Yeah, and what about his 20 goals in under 14's?

I don't think that is very relevant to a discussion on whether he is just about endurance or has genuine pace do you? I think coming second in a decent field of AFL sprinters only 3 years ago is fairly relevant. Whether he made good use of that pace is another question, but he had quite a rare mix of top level pace and elite endurance. Given his end of year form, and the rumours hinted at in this thread, I can only believe this was about more things than just Billy the player. Reading between the lines, it sounds like he thought he was worth more than the club did, and turned down an initial contract in the hope he could get something better. Would be surprised if he isn't picked up as a DFA by a club that didn't want to give up picks for him during trade period. Given his age, and improvement trajectory in late season games, could easily look like a poor move down the track.

Seemed like he was the type of player who was great at VFL level, but didn't have enough of the attributes to make it at AFL level. You could argue he wasn't given enough opportunities to find his feet at the top level, but it looks like the right decision was probably made based on what posters who have seen a fair bit of him at Box Hill have been saying.

Tough to read into stats late into the season. often those games become quite bruise free and free flowing when there isn't as much on the line.

Dont understand all the moaning and carry on about billy tbh, he didnt want to be at the club for the future as reports have stated so guess what? See ya later champ, hawthorn want players in it for the long haul and committed to the principles of the club and if your only in it for your own self interests good luck hanging around with clarko in charge. Yes he had the mix of speed and endurance but considering we have impey now and lost 2 of the slower players on our list in hodge and gibson what have we actually lost in terms of onfield speed?. I actually think we have a better spread of players in terms of above average pace now. Lovell isnt slow and neither is JOR. Either of them could slot onto a wing or we could stick with henderson for another year in that role. Wont make 1 iota of difference to our fortunes going forward.

Billy overvalued himself, he thought he was worth more than the clubs valuation. and if he was right, he would have been traded, but other clubs weren't willing to pay what he thought he was worth either. With Morrison stepping up, Glass could easily become a handy, and speedy winger. I don't think we will miss Hartung.
