Has Laidley lost the players?

Ignore the work of our wonderful PR machine and the recent stories about corridor conversations (about the only time Laidley has used a corridor in recent history), and concentrate on what we're seeing on the field.

Most of our players are not playing with any conviction. We have players who almost look desperate to not have the footy, and instead of taking charge, appear to look to give off the footy (and responsibility) as soon as they can to anyone they can.

Our attitude on the field looks awful, and attitude is reflective of leadership.

Has Laidley lost the players? Or have our players seemingly forgotten how to play football?

whoever has told them over the past month to get the ball and handball it at all costs (even if the player recieving the ball has three players on him) should be taken out into the middle of Arden St and sorted out.

Ugly to watch, and destined to fail.

IMO players get to a certain point where they seem to outgrow their coach...it happened at the lions....

sheedy was blessed by having the long term support of his board and strong recruitment...

he could coach through 4 lifecyles of player development....our problem is that we missed a critical period in that cycle....

we went for established players and missed the kids that would see us peak at the right time...

hawthorn and the cats are classic examples of teams who purposely built their team to peak at a particular point...

we missed it with Hay etc...we now need to draw a line in the sand and start the cycle again...
move on those players who are average and start getting kids into their long term positions and playing them..week after week..

we now need to look at 4 to 5 years down the track

Absolutely. Been tellin' ya's for months.

You called it a long time ago, that's to be sure.

Interesting that the players Laidley's had falling out's with have come back this year and done well; Hamish, Swallow, McMahon, etc.

Jones and Harris don't count, because he had legitimate concerns with them based on form.

So it's a bit of a conundrum. But I just cannot shake the feeling whilst watching the delayed telecast now that those players out there, with a few exceptions, are not giving it their all.

Yep he has. Lost most Members to.

Time to resign Laidley, you are no longer needed here thank you for the 7 years that you put in, but we are going backwards.

Spot on!:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Interestingly on the coverage, Tim Watson was at the huddles and in the rooms and his (Laidley's) messages were pretty consistent with what we on here have been asking the side to do! Less handball, more kicking, quicker ball movement and deep into the forward line. Our skills were just so poor we had no chance.

I can tell you that Aaron Edwards was fuming when Laidley took him off in the last. I was sitting right next to our bench and he was trying to get an answer why he had been dragged and no one semed to have an answer for him. Urquhart had to tell him to come for a jog to try and cool him down. The officials on the bench seemed to be agreeing with him as they too were shrugging their shoulders.

Let's hope he resigns sooner or later before he really does some long term damage, if he hasn't already!

Superb observations. I would disagree that it has to be 4 to 5 years.
We have the talent base to build a strong team. With the right coach, I reckon we could be back 2-3 years.
Right now the Roos are playing like rabbits frozen in the headlights. No one has the speed AND run to hurt midfield zones. Losing Wells, Harvey and Cambell have really exposed our lack of depth in the speed department.
This admistration has to make this coach accept responsibility for delivering the team we've got. It's been seven years.

Anyone else follow the NBA closely? Specifically the Minnesota TWolves? They have had a coach the last few years called Randy Whittman who was apparently decent with x & o's, but he was terrible with players. He was Laidley like in that he would berate the players in public, scream at them in timeouts for no particular reason, and the game plan was terrible. Even though the team roster wasn't that great, the team shouldnt have been performing as bad as they were. After a long preseason camp in 08 that was supposed to have shown great promise (sound familiar?), the start to the season was terrible. The players did not play for the coach anymore and it showed. I think we lost 13 in a row, then the axe fell. In place of Whittman came the great Kevin McHale. The man who had made some average personnel decisions in the front office was now coach. But the players love the guy and they are willing to play for him. It was the change the team needed and proved that you don't need to be great with x&o's to be a succesful coach. Its not all tatics. There are plenty of assistants that can assist in that way. There are some things that only great basketball minds can communicate and McHale is a legend in the NBA and the players respect that and want to hear what he has to say. I think in Jan he got coach of the month, but then our star Al Jefferson had a season ending knee injury so the season was a write off in terms of reaching the playoffs. But by bringing in a new coach that was willing to play to the strengths of the young team, where the Tpups finished in the standings was not a reflexion on where the team finished in terms of development and a launching pad for next season.
Most of the players for the Roos have probably been listening to Laidley spew out the same rhetoric for the last 8 years or so and have just stopped listening. Laidley is Whittman and we need a McHale. There is no reason this season has to be a write off. It doesn't matter if we keep losing at the moment, as long as North takes steps forward and not back from here on out. A change from the top should be the first step forward North Melbourne FC takes this year because right now we only stepped back to 2006.

This is an excellent point. I too had heard that Laidley has been pleading with the players to play long and direct with quick ball movement but the players continually defy him. While the supporters are critical of the supposed game plan, Laidley is in agreement with us - the game that the players are playing is rot and we don't want it and Laidley doesn't either.

So to be clear - if we are to replace Dean Laidley, it is not because he has the players playing an indirect, horrid game plan under instruction. We are replacing Dean because he is unable to put together a team of 22 players willing and unable to play to his instructions.

Whatever the reason, it needs to happen and soon!

THE END!! Right here right now. The nail on the coffin.
