So the coaches don't have Buddy in the top 10, have Danger 2nd, yet they vote Buddy above Danger.
Do you think that's a little hypocritical?
Different criteria I think. One is tracking performances on a week to week basis. The other is a gut feel "which player is the most valuable to have on your team". Bud certainly not the best player this year but still handy in the eyes of the coaches.

Still doesn't make sense though, because when asked which sort of player most needed, most voted inside mids.

You're kidding, right?

Carey pushed on ball and into defence with aplomb. He was a natural footballer in every sense of the word, as good with the ball on the deck as he was with it coming at him in the air. Dual sided too and murdered it in the wet (pun intend ed?).

Not saying Carey isnt an all time great but there is no way he covered as much ground as Franklin does or would go anywhere near him athletically. Franklin would have him covered confortably for pace over any distance you care to name and is around 7cm taller and over 10kg heavier.

Carey had several huge games at CHB- I remember he had 32 possessions against Geelong at CHB one game, could have been a great CHB. Was good on the ball when moved there as well.

I can see Buddy dropping off a lot over the next 12 months. He's starting to lose that athleticism that's crucial to his ability to find space - space and a long kick that previously gave him the insane ability to generate shots from anywhere.

One thing buddy has over carey is durability.
Carey was cooked by the end of 2001. All those contested grabs must have ****** his shoulders ;)

I think that will be the deciding factor once it's all said and done. Buddy will just have a larger body of quality work.

Carey was declining heavily during 2001, obviously spent all of 2002 on the sidelines, and was a shadow of his best in two seasons in Adelaide.

Fitness pending, you can foresee Buddy ageing a fair bit more gracefully, and comfortably end up a 300 game/900 goal player. Buddy will begin to decline due to age, but current form suggests the fall won't nearly be as steep as it was for Duck. Buddy is of course reliant on his physical gifts like Duck was, but not in as much of a physically taxing, wear-and-tear kind of way, so you would assume the physical decline won't happen as sharply either.

Gee good thread.

Buddy and Carey are hard to separate.
What i love about both of them is their onfield presence. A bit arrogance in both of them which is fantastic, with the godlike ability to back it up, i think it adds character to the game. Something that is sorely missing generally.

I have no conclusion, both are greats of the game.
