Was watching WCE v GC last night and he really made so some stupid errors , during one passage of play when all the GC players manned up on the WCE players in defense he kicked backwards and almost cost us a goal.

He needs to get some confidence in his kicking as there were a few long options but it was like he was scared to take it. Glass used to have this problem and has managed to work his way around it. But this is something that can be fixed and can a see a big future for EMAC.

Emac is better 1 on 1, but glass is the better back man. if i had to pick one to have it would be glass.

i prefer him floating through defense and giving leadership than playing on a franklin/pavlich

glass was AA captain last year wasnt he? what does that mean in this question

i always think they are given their best matchup on a game day and if they start getting on top they get switched, kinda logical really.

always liked e-mac even when he first started and gave away a lot of turnovers, i always thought he reminded me of a young glass that was learning the trade when mcintosh was still around. if he turns out to be like glass with his career and leadership that can be passed onto the next young key back i would be more than happy

A few people have said something to this effect but I'm not sure it's true.

Glass doesn't lose too many 1 on 1 battles. Is Mackenzie really better in that regard?

Against the likes of Franklin, Hawkins and Cloke i would say undoubtedly.

I wouldn't.

Do you think Glass has lost something in recent years?

I still rate him as an outstanding one-on-one defender.

He's lost size for one?

Perhaps if those players all played deep all the time, but 1 on 1 contests occur all over the ground in all sorts of situations and Mackenzie's size and reach advantages are hard to ignore.

Mackenzie is much better suited to 196cm+ mobile forwards.

Really?

I don't know. I reckon I've been watching a different player.

Glass is still a brick shithouse and would be one of the strongest defenders in the comp.

Sure. I agree that it makes sense for Mackenzie to take those taller, uber-athletic roaming key forwards, particularly when they are further from goal. Franklin, for example. But that only proves that Mackenzie is taller and probably has a bigger tank, not that he is better one-on-one. And a big part of that is our desire to keep Glass on the last line, where his decision-making and rebounding is so valuable, whereas Mackenzie can still be a bit of a liability.

One-out under a high ball in the goal-square, I would still prefer Glass. Not even close in my mind. His body-work is exceptional, the way he protects the drop zone and denies his opponent front position. We've always backed Glass one-on-one in that scenario and I don't think he has lost anything in that regard.

If you reckon Glass simply isn't tall enough to take the tallest forwards, how did we manage back in 2005-2008 when the only other option was Hunter, who was even shorter?

Darren Glass was interviewed last year and he mentioned he had dropped about 7kgs of muscle mass to make him a more agile and versatile defender. It also meant he was less equipped (though hardly a nuffy) to take the big strong forwards anymore.

He still has the subtlety of body work, just enough to get someone off balance, but ultimately against a guy like Drew Petrie or Travis Cloke - Mackenzie is the better bet.

Still - Glass is a better footballer.

Jaymie Graham was an option in that period as well.

I've been having a discussion with another Eagles fan and would be interested in the consensus on this board.

Based on performances rather than potential, has Mackenzie surpassed Glass as our best key defender? Who was better and more important in 2012?

**** no mackenzie still has his panic moments still needs a year or so to settle.

Good question! I've been having this discussion with my brother recently. The way I see it is while Mackenzie does take the best forward, Glass is more important to the team, just in his presence in the backline, the way he organizes our defenders and his leadership on field is outstanding. I had glass ahead of Mackenzie, just.

As far as taking the best forward goes than arguably EMac has passed Glass yes.

Darren's taken a more back seat role this year and still cleaning up. As has been mentioned previously we can afford to take some pressure off Darren nowadays and play him more on the second or third best tall after EMac and maybe Schofield. All about lengthening his career

Firstly, that's not what he was saying. So you just sound like a jackass, chiming in without a clue. As usual.

Secondly, it's not even true. Mackenzie is likely to take the CHF while Glass still takes whoever plays deep. It just so happens that most of the best key forwards these days line up further from goal because they have that mobility and athleticism, meaning Mackenzie takes them.

If the best key forward plays deep, I'd expect Glass to take them. So it's not about Mackenzie taking the best forward and Glass getting an easy ride. It's about the way we want to organise our defence, with Glass on the last line and Mackenzie further afield.

I could sweat this guy starts threads just to pick fights.
Might be time to go outside and kick the footy

Good question!
Thanks!

Would you believe that some people consider Glass to be a third tall?

Thanks!

I can see their point of view, in some games he has played as a third tall, he's also played as a loose defender, as a full back, as a running back...the list goes on. I see him now as a bit of a wirrapunda type that mops up our defense.

Pretty much still a FB, champ.
