Has Malthouse Been A Failure?

Well I guess the board felt the time was right. I'm not sure why so many from outside Carlton are now rating the list above where it currently sits. Hawthorn supporters have been talking us down for years, yet you now want to blame Malthouse?

Very confusing comment. What are you talking about? You mention something about Hawthorn supporters (irrelevant), and then blame Malthouse. Bringing Malthouse meant you had to take two steps back in the hope you will take further steps forward. It would've been interesting to see what Ratten would've done this year with another year. Maybe no better or maybe no worse, but now we will never know for sure.

he's a grumpy old bloke, but MM still has the football and management smarts.

Process, process, process.

This season is very much laying down the foundation for the next couple of seasons IMO. He's trying to get them competitive, but he's also teaching him how to operate his way. i'm sure MM would've warned the CAR top brass prior to taking the job that change doesn't happen overnight, or in the football cycle, one season. and they'd understand that too.

give them another off-season and see if they improve again next year. that's when the Blues boardroom will really begin to factor in the wins in there analysis.

Problem is a few of their best players are starting to get the wrong side of 30.

2014:

Scotland -34
Waite - 31
Judd - 31
Carrazzo - 31
Simpson -30

I'm not sure why you are confused. You claim the club is back-peddling for allowing Malthouse time to influence the make-up of the list. Ratten had 5 years and was largely responsible for the current list, true we may have been a little higher this year under Ratten, but still nowhere near it against the better sides. I don't see how Giving Malthouse time is the cop-out you're making it out to be.

So we go to the draft instead of watching the clock tick and worrying about it. Tried and true method amongst the better sides.

Spose we will find out in the next couple of seasons in answer to the op.

But this week MM complained about some birds on the field of one of the best stadiums in the world - a stadium that has hardly had anywhere near the kind of issues its brother Etihad has had. MM has always taken the press as an opportunity to winge - but this season he has really really been showing his age. It is irritating to listen to.

So don't listen. Head to the nearest birdwatching group of a weekend, with binoculars and thermos handy. You may be the next Bill Oddie.

He doesn't whinge to whinge so much as deflect IMO

So have you consigned to a full or partial rebuild?

The problem is that the better sides have a strong record in both drafting and development. Carlton's recent history in this area has been pathetic.

I'm consigned to several Northern Blues stalwarts not receiving new contracts and being replaced by draftees, as well as the possibility of 1 or 2 trades and maybe acquiring a free agent.

Hard to argue with this, we need to improve and have strengthened this area recently. Development needs to get better as well.

Two serious questions for Carlton supporters here.

First, if you stumble into finals this season will this make the season a success?

Second, will stumbling into the finals this season alter your perception on the state of the playing (I'm basing this on the reasonable assumption that most Carlton supporters do not think much of the short term ability of their playing list)

Serious question needs a serious answer..

Stumbling into finals may give us the chance of a final against the Tigers or Pies and an unexpected reward for what has been a so-so season. After dispatching either of these minnows the year would likely end the next week.

The Northern Blues will still be severely depleted for next year come final list lodgement however.

I personally hoped to see certain thing this year that tells me we are improving as a side collectively, more than making finals or not.

For example, before losing to Collingwood in round 15, I thought we had shown something in each game and never gave up on a contest.

I thought at that period, all we have to learn is to avoid the lapses and we'd be a top team next year.

If that trend had continued and we didn't make finals, I would have classified the season as a success.

However, performances against Collingwood Rd 15, Fremantle Rd 19 and Dogs Rd 20 tells me this season cannot be classified as a success, however a par.

Whilst showing certain things in our game that is obvious improvement, at the same time, it showed the weak mental performances evident from the previous year that has me worried that there is more than lapses involved... however still need team adjustment.

If we do make the finals, I won't be surprised if we win week 1 (against any of Pies, Tigers, Dons or Port)... however I would still see our season as par.

What I wanted to see this year is Fremantle 2012 style of playing your role. It does not matter who it is, you play your role. That is what Mick is trying to instill and that is where we still need massive improvement.

Saying that, should we get this part of our game right, then we should be among the better teams next year.

In summary: Make the finals/win a final/fail to make the finals, I would still rate our season as Par.

Only at Carlton could not making the finals be considered a par.

Seems there's always "next season" down at Princess Park.
Oh really? Do the Dogs think they've had a par season or better? Should Port not make final, what would their season be labelled?

Carlton has marginally been better than last year, hence it's a par season. Last year we went backwards, hence a failed season. Next year should we fail to make the finals, will be a failed season.

Oh so "next year" finals is the target? Before this season started, top 4 was being talked up.

At what point next year will the goal posts be shifted should finals not look likely?

You clearly find it hard to comprehend what you read. Should I repeat myself?

If we don't make the finals next year, it's a failed season.

Our aim was to make top 4 in 2012 (as you would, when you finish 5th the previous year). The formula didn't work and therefore changes were made. Now we need to let the formula take shape. It doesn't happen over night, especially when all the ingredients were inherited.

Now, if you weren't a Collingwood fan with obvious distaste for both club and coach, you might be able to comprehend the concept better.

1/. Definitely not. Much work to do particularly in recruiting and development.

2/. See 1

So in other words, when it appears you won't make finals next year the goal posts will be shifted again and 2015* will be the year in which a measly finals appearance will be considered a grand success?

*unless half way through the year it becomes clear the forecast should have been for 2016.

Why are you getting so worked up? It's his opinion on a pass or fail..

I'm not sure what you mean by getting worked up? Typing some words on a computer never really takes that much out of me. Are you suggesting posting on bigfooty is an emotionally challenging affair? Maybe you should take a week off mate, there are bigger things in life than the forums, take it from someone with a yacht and 6 girl friends.
