Autopsy Has the game gone past certain coaches like Alistar Clarkson and John Longmire?

Last year the same question was asked about Fagan by some. If the game has gone past coaches they aren't getting their team competitive enough to be flogged in grand finals, Sydney might need a tweak or two - or just some luck - but a major overhaul of playing or coaching staff just means a step backward for a team not that far off. Sometimes you get almost everything right, but don't get the prize. That's sport.

As for Clarkson, maybe it has, maybe not. From where North were, and are, making finals within his contract would be a minor miracle.

I assume “the game going past” a coach means they have not kept up with the tactics and strategies and technologies and complexities of the modern game.

Longmire is fine with them. They might just need a better sports psych one week a year.

Yeahhh well past them. Longmire only coached the Swans to first on the ladder. Absolutely washed

It’s as though coaching has inexplicably been something he has under control all season but for two hours he forgets completely and the whole concept and industry has left him in its wake because of one match

Pretty much, that's how the not so intelligent see it anyway

'Game has gone past him' is one of those great football cliches which sounds deep but means absolutely nothing

Hasn't taken a wooden spoon team out of the bottom 4 in two years? 'Game had gone past him'.

70% winning record, 4 finals campaigns and 2 grand finals appearancea over the past 4 years, but no flag? 'I reckon the game has gone past him'

If you look at Sydney's record over that time they don't so much have a grand final problem as a MCG problem, but thats understandable given they are optimised to play games at the vastly different looking SCG. And if the game has gone past Longmire, **** knows what that means for the multitude of coaches who have nothing like his record in recent years.

That last bit is easy to answer , the AFL isn’t a zero sum game advantages and disadvantages vary wildly from team to team

So with a nice run on the advantage side and minimal impact from the disadvantage side the worst coach in the comp could easily win the flag in the AFL

EASILY

Longmire not old school enough imo.
Got carried away in modern corporate culture and corporate speak. Managing reputation and PR. Look how he carried on when Heeney got suspended for just one week. It was weird. It all went pear shaped after that really.

Yes we want professional training standards BUT I think player culture needs to be still local footy grass roots. Nothing wrong with some mongrel.

I also think the idea the game is super complicated with ever changing strategies is a myth and just marketing spin. Most game plans are the same.

Some teams have better players, some teams have better conditioning, some teams have better motivation, some teams have better training methods.

I'm not convinced that anyone has some genius strategy and even if they do it wouldn't take many weeks for others to copy it.

Longmire, No, Poor record in GF's, but he gets there and has developed the likes of Warner, Mills, Heeney, Florent, Rowbottam and Gulden.

Clarkson, Undecided, North were poo when he got there, and are poo still with a few young gems Sheezel and Wardlaw.
He has also had to contend with the racism investigation from Hawthorn. Then again so did Chris convo...rough teddy
