The media have to produce stories every week, they have to produce content, they have to give their opinions. If you are going to be offended by anything negative written about your club you are not going to have a good time.

I would rather media personalities make big claims or predictions than them trying to play it safe, stay on the fence and end up not having any opinions at all.

Ok. Kane Cornes typically baits so cant be taken seriously but Kingy genuinely believes his b.s. he really mad an ass of himself over that segment.

Underdogs most of the year. Written off and disrespected game after game.

Then we have ridiculous articles like this.

Chris Fagan would quietly be thinking F. You to David King right now

💯

Media were harsh against Fagan due to age and because he didn't play AFL footy.

Absolutely certain.

Kingy is not as astute as many think he is, he's been wrong on plenty, hates criticism of himself which he deflects very quickly, usually through attack and has blind spots for clubs not from Victoria as he spends all of season watching vic clubs only.

He's a poor commentator but can have good half time and post game analysis.

I mean, to an extent?

A problem with footy is that when it comes specifically to QLD and NSW, footy is not the only thing. It can't dominate the media landscape the way it does in Perth, Adelaide or Melbourne, because there's a lot of old establishment types that prevent it from happening. Then, add in that Victorian - and Adelaide, and Perth - media only really like to talk about themselves and what you've got is a media landscape that absolutely doesn't really look at Brisbane properly.

This is not always a bad thing, though. In 2015, Brisbane came second last to Carlton on percentage and then second last again to Essendon on percentage during the player suspension, coming dead last in 2017. Did you see them really cop it in the media akin to how North Melbourne have copped it over the last few years, or how Carlton were reported between 2017-2020? Instead of the nigh wall to wall talkback chat and blistering denunciations - if you remember, in 2013 Melbourne started a conversation that continued when Carlton were poor concerning the 'right' to play Friday night footy or marquee fixtures - you do still get some negative coverage but significantly less.

While you want a certain amount of attention, some clubs will always slip under the radar in the footy landscape, for good or ill.

and if Lions lose a couple in a row next year he'll be back to the subject...unfortunate cause his passion for the game is great and draws attention, just lets himself down by often being dismissive of others and relying heavily on his 'numbers'

Preseason belongs to Essendon
Home and away season belongs to Geelong
Sometimes Port or the Swans get their nose in

But it is a rinse and repeat cycle of teams the media loves talking about as 'the best' during the season. Some clubs and some fanbases just enjoy being talked about as a good team every week of the journey rather than worrying about being the best at the destination.

Every journalist and commentator now has to look at clicks and socials. An article or a hot take on Brisbane won't get them the clicks they need to get paid.

The media often don't even send anyone to their press conferences, or if they do it's one journo with a phone on voice record and the club does the filming.

You are going to bring up articles from a month ago?

This is hindsight bs at its finest.

Brisbane underperformed in the regular season - who could dispute that?

They performed in the finals and won the day.

You want to go and punish everyone who didnt declare the premier the victors ahead of time?

More nuanced than that, Lions were a basket case when Fagan took over. Not only bottom of the ladder but bleeding talent (Crisp, Yeo, Polac). Fagan has built a sustained run of success and created an environment that not only retains talent but also draw it (Dunkley, Daniher, Doedee). No hindsight there.

King goes hard it him for being a spud coach. North, Crows and Hawks can only hope our rebuilds look like what Fagan has achieved.

I wonder if King will turn the blowtorch on his old team mate for playing like millionaires in July only to give up in GFs? Longmire hasn't won a cracker since 2012, chokes on the biggest stage, yet King lauds him as a great coach. Double standard?

Its a performance industry. Fagan has had the best list for a long time now and has finally achieved success with it. Of course he was going to get scrutiny until he delivered.

Yeah ok King might not rate him specifically but many in the footy world were no doubt thinking that if Fagan lost again yesterday it would be time to pass the torch.
Many are saying that of Longmire now.

It's results-based.

If you see articles written from now on not giving Fagan/Lions credit then sure, bring it up, but piling on people's articles from a month or more ago is the realm of the coward.

They are the best team of the last 5 years, and by some way.

Anyone who thinks they wont win another flag with this list is kidding themselves. Smashed with injury all year and still peaked at the right time.

They will be better in 2025 and 2026 than they were in 2024.
Im more confident about a back to back than any other year. Although I thought this about richmond.

Without serious list changes, or injuries, I cant see any team matchng them in finals. They will grow in confidence and likely fix poor performances.

And before anyone says Hawks..

Will get a reality check in 25

Agree on the Hawks. I dont think they make the finals.

Im not questioning the critique of his performance up to date during the year. It was the insane segment calling on Brisbane to dump him for Chris Scott. King has no credibility. There are media personalities who can be critical but yet respectful.

Its Kane Cornes attack on Richmond vibes.

No they're just reactionary, they don't consider things changing the next week ahead. The only look at the last result and judge off that week to week. It's why Carlton are flag favourites during the season. I also think they take Champion Data's stats too seriously. Dogs and Hawks were the two best teams going into finals apparently. I think after seeing the results they need to re look at the formula to judge success. It's not on the stat sheet, it's between players ears. Which is Sydney's problem, but that's another story.

He was bullish on Sydney before the start of the season when most weren't. He likely tipped Sydney yesterday out of pure stubbornness, not sure how the best analyst in the game could be so far off the mark.

Crisp isn’t a good example. He was nothing at the time and was part of the trade for getting in Beams.

But yes, Fagan has done an excellent job fixing the issues at the club, and creating a great environment. I think the criticism has been with him tactically in the coaches box given the talent he has at his disposal.

I doubt anyone will doubt him now.
