Has the media disrespected Brisbane?

Nup. It’s been an even season. They almost didn’t make the gf. Good on them - happy they won. A couple of journos talked them up all year- said they had the best list and were the team to beat. Can’t recall who it was though sorry- must be sen team people.

The media disrespects itself. I'm a mug punter, as little idea as anyone but I never wrote off Brisbane, obvious quality.

Lives and dies on Champion Data stats. Then when they failed at North Kingy said that “Luffy is still a star”.

Lions beat GWS and he said that Kingsley out coached Fagan.
Yep King peddles this snake oil system against all evidence. Did they bomb out again this year? Hoynie tipped against the pies 3/3 last year.

[edit]To his credit Hoyne tipped Brisbane.

Every journalist and commentator now has to look at clicks and socials. An article or a hot take on Brisbane won't get them the clicks they need to get paid.

The media often don't even send anyone to their press conferences, or if they do it's one journo with a phone on voice record and the club does the filming.
I've seen this quite a bit at multiple clubs. Goodwin had like one journo at his pressers for half the season until the Petracca story came up then it was packed.

More nuanced than that, Lions were a basket case when Fagan took over. Not only bottom of the ladder but bleeding talent (Crisp, Yeo, Polac). Fagan has built a sustained run of success and created an environment that not only retains talent but also draw it (Dunkley, Daniher, Doedee). No hindsight there.

King goes hard it him for being a spud coach. North, Crows and Hawks can only hope our rebuilds look like what Fagan has achieved.

I wonder if King will turn the blowtorch on his old team mate for playing like millionaires in July only to give up in GFs? Longmire hasn't won a cracker since 2012, chokes on the biggest stage, yet King lauds him as a great coach. Double standard?
King isn’t alone though, Longmire seems like a terrific fella and is obviously very popular in the media. They are loath to talk him down. There is also a perception it is better to contend every 2nd year and not win it than win a few and drop away. Look at the way Hardwick is compared to Scott and Longmire, both are always talked about as the best coaches in the comp while Dimma is barely mentioned. Premierships have to be the ultimate measurement not just “putting yourself in the ring.”

Crisp isn’t a good example. He was nothing at the time and was part of the trade for getting in Beams.

But yes, Fagan has done an excellent job fixing the issues at the club, and creating a great environment. I think the criticism has been with him tactically in the coaches box given the talent he has at his disposal.

I doubt anyone will doubt him now.
I call Crisp 'Steak Knives' as he was the add on that nobody rated.

Don't get the age thing myself. They were saying he was too old when he was late 50s. I know late 50s people who are sprighlier and sharper than 20yos. When did they become geriatric? Do you need to be able to run around with the boys to coach? We have 80 year olds as presidents of the US and 60 is too old for a coach? Cos that's how it is? That's funny haha.

Underdogs most of the year. Written off and disrespected game after game.

Then we have ridiculous articles like this.

Chris Fagan would quietly be thinking F. You to David King right now

You need to divide anything Dickhead King has written by at least 2. He has written off my team every year since 2011, so I treat everything he writes with a grain of salt

I'd argue the quality player Crisp became at the pies, including playing 22 games in his first season (6 in his last at the lions) suggests something was seriously amiss while he was in Brisbane. Players who can't wait to get out probably aren't giving themselves the best chance to display their talent.

That fact he was "nothing at time" of the trade arguably says more about the environment he was leaving (and the culture of the club he joined) than it does about Crisp, particularly when you consider how quickly he turned it around at the pies.

I bloody rated him. Was furious when we gave him up as an afterthought, and my Pies-supporting broze-in-law have never let me forget. Still, I suppose we would have had to let him go to Collingwood once he started getting covered in tattoos 😃
