I was criticised on here for suggesting JUH was probably close to being dropped mid season but games like tonight happen for him.

In the home and away season he can still sneak a goal or two and fly under the radar but with the pressure on he was awful and didn’t even look like it.

It’s good he came of age a bit during the year but next year he needs to turn up every week.
My anger towards him tonight turned to embarrassment. His efforts were comical garbage and you just knew he was missing that 20m gimme. Really needed to just do the basics tonight and build from there.

Watching the second half reminded me of halfway through through the 3rd quarter of the 2021. smashed out of the middle, killed for speed, overwhelmed and couldn't stop the tide.

What kills my mind is in the mid 2000s right up til 2011, we arguably had the quickest squad in the comp and we were never as damaging as sides are now days. SPEED kills and we probably need to get some of it back.

Time will prove me wrong but I think the dogs need to bend over Tasmania and trade one of Naughton or JUH. There is no way the dogs can keep all and I'd say Darcy is the untouchable one of the 3.

Gunston kept him out of the game by sitting deep, it was 1 of a number of Hawks’ tactics that worked and we didn’t counter.

Also, the English lovers are pretty quiet tonight wouldn’t you say 3NP?
English was poor relative to Meek but not any more to their seasons in general I thought it would be fair to say, as Meek clearly had the better one.

Keep in mind that the crowd and stadium goes both ways, it can be both true that the Hawks played excellent, premiership quality footy (which I think they did) and still play that well and lose one of two interstate finals before making a GF.

It was clear right at the start of the game they were riding the wave of a passionate, home crowd in their conditions and 70,000 of their own fans. It sucks that we matched up with the literal only other MCG tenant out of 7 who made finals but on the other hand finishing top 4 was absolutely in our destiny - even we had lost to Hawks in a top 4 battle instead there would have been a next week.

Please don’t go Sydney and blame the umpires - hawks were way too good

We can blame the umps for being poor and at the same time use common sense and say it probably only favoured the Hawks a goal or two at most over the game.

Bottom line, we are a soft football side. We are weak.

That weakness extends to the coaches box where it seems all cuddles and love when what we really need is foots up arses.

Tonight was unforgivable. That was the most insipid performance of the season and how that can be rolled out in a cut throat final is beyond my grasp.

A ruthless club would just about trade Ugle Hagan after that performance, English was soft again, Naughton rarely sighted and the amount of times we were easily pushed out of the contest made my blood boil.

They spread and had (were given) acres of space. They flipped the ball around and were much harder.

Will we do anything about it? Course not. We'll drift through the trade and draft period, minimal change and expect better results next year.

We're a middling side right now and unless there's proper change, we're not going anywhere. It's crap.

Sick of the touchy feely BS, when are we going to stop accepting mediocrity?

Top 4 list bottom 4 coach that is coasting off what he did 8 years ago.
Our list is not top four by any stretch of the imagination. Our bottom 6 to 8 are poor. JUH needs massive help or trade him, Mentally weak. Our coach cannot be renewed. A new mindset is required. THE LIST CANNOT COPE WITH FINALS PRESSURE SINCE THE 2021 GF. We are not as bad as Port, but close to it!!!

Some stats

We won at clearance but were just dominated at possession and territory.
Hitouts dominated. We turned it over heaps and they just were intercepting everything.

I’ll give a shoutout to Treloar. Excellent season. He was clearly not fully fit tonight but still managed 28 disposals, 6 clearances and a goal - better than most on the ground and he couldn’t even run close to full pace. Always gives his full effort and that’s all you can ask for
Loved Treloar’s year & I think he should poll well in the Brownlow, but the raw numbers really flattered he, Libba and Richards tonight.

All three were poor imo.

They should’ve won by 10+ goals. It was an absolutely insipid performance by our side and one that everyone involved with the footy department should be ashamed of.

Absolutely this. Treloar was rubbish. Libba looks cooked and God I hope bont was injured

14.15 they kicked and had they kicked straighter they absolutely could have won by more.

1092 days since we last won a final. Just saying.
And it's going to be at least another 365 before we get another chance.

I think we are in the bottom half of the league on that stat with only the following worse than us - Essendon, North, St Kilda, Gold Coast, West Coast, Port Adelaide, Adelaide and Richmond.

So is making the finals a pass mark for 2025?

Not in my book.

Maybe we'll get a full explanation from the club and then a change to a more hard nosed, ruthless approach to trading and then a year where we come out win 8 of the first 10 and finish top 4?

😜 😜 😜

Richards in particular for mine, was unseen in that third quarter.
I can recall the last time Richards played anywhere near that poorly. Just seemed reluctant to pull the trigger in the 2nd & 3rd (as did most of his mates) & was turning it over with dinky little nothing kicks.

Just one of those nights, unfortunately.

Their game was won by their sweeping half backs and wings, not by their midfield (after all, we won the clearance count comfortably, and both teams had roughly the same amount of shots per inside 50).

People can disagree but that's the main difference in where the game was won - ability of each team to move the ball. Not the respective forward 50s or stoppages but the I50 differential.

Individual players in our forward line and defence played well and poorly and that sort of balanced each other out.

But our structural ability for our wings and small forwards to structure and pressure up was clearly poor from early in the second.

Gallagher was lost on the wing before he subbed off and left huge holes that were exploited (on top of poor in ball in hand). That was the main selection mistake on top of everything, I've posted plenty of times how silly how many games he has gotten for how poor his season has been.

McNeil was okay in efforts but didn't work well structurally off the others.

Weightman got sucked into hunting the ball once he started poorly, which let their half backs ran riot.

Vandermeer was poorish but it isn't as much his job as the others.

People have already pointed out how poor Harmes was.

This was poor by Bevo who was thoroughly outcoached. One win vs GWS and some poor form shouldn't have cost West's place in the team structurally, who would have done a disciplined role on their rebounding defenders and held his position deep forward, allowing McNeil, Weightman and the others clearer roles. West's discipline and adherence to structure and defensive stuff as allowed Weightman to hunt the ball on instinct this season, but without that for this game, Weightman's roaming left their defenders free

There was one marking contests with our big in the 3rd quarter where the ball got out the back and it would have been perfect for their smalls. Instead, two of their small defenders got behind the contest and won it vs 0 of ours. Compare that to Jones' fresh air spoil in the last where they has 2 forwards to run onto vs ours.

Other than that, Hawks played excellent footy, the kind has made them one of the best teams in the last few months, plus riding the wave of their fans and their home ground and a fearless attituse. It's entirely possible that we could have put one bad game against another top side to the side and still win against other top teams, but I guess we'll never know given we failed to finish top 4.

This has laid bare our weaknesses
