Next season we will need to expose more fringe players to the line up without effecting performance. Come this time next year we will need to cash in on some players in the trade period.
No chance players earn their spot we are full steam ahead.

Who are you thinking of?
It doesn't matter who it is players earn their spot
Wont be easy. Competition for spots is off the chain.
Exactly we are not doing that.

Someone who was borderline 22 or depth this year - but then spends all season at Box Hill in 2025 - will NOT be "depth" anymore. They might step in and be able to cope physically, but they will be on a different plane to the rest of the team.

They won't have that intrinsic understanding of the system, their team-mates, etc. The advantage of training and playing together every week is that you start to "predict" what your team-mate is going to do. That fraction of a second is barely noticeable, but is the difference between breaking clear into space, or having your opponent close enough to slow you down.

I'd hope even without injuries we manage to run another half-dozen players through the 22. It's not "gifting" a spot - we're still picking the next best available, but we are keeping a larger list 'ready' for finals.

Ideally, every player in our 22 can be rested for any niggle, we have replacements ready to step up. Individually, players would be reluctant to step out for "one week" - if their replacement has a great game, they may get relegated to Box Hill!

And exactly what we needed to do in the finals this year when Finn, Morrison and Ward all got a chance to step up, and arguably all performed well. Serong to a lesser extent also.

I just can't see how North Melbourne and West Coast wouldn't match any free agency bid! They can't afford not to. Losing those two players would be catastrophic for there rebuilds.

True, but if they finish bottom 3, then the FA compo would be better than any trade.
All we need to do is convince the player.

Anyone under 10 games. We need to somehow drive up some value . Excluding McCabe
We are trying to win the flag. We can’t select players based on increasing their trade value. Idiotic to gift games to players who the clubs plans to trade.

Yeah - that's not how team selection works if you want to contend for a flag.

Feel the game is moving away from the beast forward.

You really need a running agile forward that can lay defensive pressure. Hogan does a mountain of running but is also strong in a 1v1 strength battle. Not many like him tbh.
Carlton go okay when McKay and Curnow are clunking them.

Neither are particularly agile nor are they tackle machines.

Totally disagree. It’s up to the coaching staff and the players themselves to ensure the game style and strategy is known by each and every player (whether they’re playing AFL week in/out or not).

Harry Morrison and Finn both spent extended periods at Box Hill in the winter months, and had no issues “getting on the plane” once called up to the side.

The strongest side is a club where players 1 - 38 all know what is required of them in either side at any time.

We don’t earmark 6 players to get a sneaky run. That’s just silly.

We pick our best 22 from the list each week and everyone is expected to know their role.

Hopefully, we don’t start the year 1-6 so that rotations and rests as the season progresses are more in the coach’s control. They pretty much had no luxury to rest the sore or reward effort in the twos after that start. Every game required the best 22 every time and injury was the only way in, almost finals-like selection the entire last 2/3’s of the season. Not quite that dramatic, but approaching it.

O'Sullivan's body appeared to always be letting him down. Talent wise I absolutely thought there was a player there.

He tackled to hurt and could seemed to hit the scoreboard or create chances pretty consistently at VFL level.

All the best the delisted trio. I anticipate we'll see Phillips and DGB in other colours next season.

During our premiership years and periods of success our depth was a common factor ……. our 27th/28th best player on the list was a good player that could step in at anytime. Watching Finn and Harry playing their roles during the finals highlights that our playing list has reached this stage.

FB Frost Barrass Hardwick
HB Scrim Battle Impey
C Amon Worps Mass
HF Croc Chol Siss
FF Watson Dear Moore
RR Meek Newcombe Day

Inter: Weddle, Nash, Ginni, Frenchie, Gunners/Bruest

Depth: Lewis, CJ, Ward, Finn, Harry, Reeves, Blanck, Serong noting a few of these guys recovering from significant injuries.

This is quite insane! Our biggest problem is keeping this list together but what a great problem to have 😊

Coach has confidence in the playing group …… no wonder when he spoke at the B&F his famous last words “We’re just getting started”!
Gezz we looking good if Weddle is on the bench!

Shame for Phillips, DGB and JOS. Really feel for the former especially, who was given 6 months to show his worth. Hopefully another side picks all three up.

It's great to see that we have kept all of our fringe best 22 players and viable depth / backups (Maginess, Serong, Morrison, CJ, Ward, Ramsden, Reeves, Blanck). Any of these guys could have requested a trade in order to seek more game time.

We are in the perfect spot depth wise going into next season.

Though I think we will lose some decent players like those named above at the end of next season, as some good players will be struggling to get games.
