Not much love for Cyril. I thought he was outstanding and our greatest contested ballwinner. Gunston was probably BOG for us in one of his best games for the brown and gold. The final quarter compensated for a very lacklustre first three. We have to do a lot of work on winning more contested ball. Tigers killed us for 3 quarters and it is a pretty ordinary outfit.
Nevertheless a win is a win.
Gunstons work rate is phenomenal. Reminds me of NRoo.

That was a huge win for us, the opposition were poor and we were by no means great but the win itself was important. I'd go as far as to say it was probably our most important win of the year. No Mitchell, Hodge, Frawley and Roughead in the side is arguably like having 4 of our top 6 players in the team out and to top it all off, they were replaced by Lovell (2nd game), Howe (8th game), Brand (1st game) and O'Brien (8th game). Once I heard Mitchell out I must admit I was excited because over the past few weeks he has pretty much been our only midfielder who was creating play and with him out you knew that the onus would be on both the senior guys in Lewis and Shiels as well as the young guys. The final quarter was a strange one, we suddenly were able to win almost all centre clearances and piled on 9 goals but it was the first 3 quarters that allowed us to do that. The grind was always going to fall away, we at one stage in the third term looked like we were going to be the first to break but responded and really went into the final term with momentum.

Some player observations:

Hartung
Was really impressed with his game tonight, his work off the ball was great and I remember in one piece of play where the ball went end to end a few times without any score and Hartung was at every contest working over his opponent to create an option and free up space. A smart footballer as he knows when to take his opponent out of the play and create a decoy lead or break away to free up space. His disposal was much improved, did do a couple of handballs that weren't on but he'll learn from it no doubt. His goal at the end was well deserved for the gut running he had put in without being rewarded. Another year in the gym strengthening his core will really elevate his game to the next level
Lewis
Been scrutinized a lot on here and understandably so. Has had a poor start to the season by his own admission and up until half time he was serviceable without being great. At one stage he had the ball around 70 from goal and Sicily was 20m in the clear but he chose to kick to Poppy who was outnumbered. The other strange kick he did to Breust in the pocket was a helicopter kick. That said, his tackling was good from the outset which was something he had lacked in previous weeks so I knew he was ready to find his best form. Come the second half he was instrumental and he found a lot of the pill. He started to do a lot more directional work with the young guys at stoppages and really led by example. Really pleased to see him bounce back and play a really good game for us.
Brand
Watched him closely just to get an idea on his style and how comfortable he was down back. First thing that stood out is how good his disposal is. Not afraid to kick a bullet pass and doesn't hesitate under pressure which is something Duryea has been doing a lot this year. I'm expecting a lot more from him in the coming games if he keeps his spot as tonight whilst he was impressive I did notice a few things that were more than likely out of character for the young man. On a few occasions he wasn't sure if he should go third man up or if he should hang back. More often than not he chose to stay down and I'd say 75% of the time he made the correct call as we had no spare behind the play. The only issue was he'd find himself in no mans land if he hesitated to go up to the contest and this gave his opponent space. Again, nitpicking and obviously this will be ironed out as he becomes more accustomed to his teammates. Solid debut and I hope we get to see him line up with Chip next weekend.
Lovell
Was really pleased with his game, built upon last week and got more time playing on ball which was good. One noticeable thing was that as the game went on he found confidence and really improved in both his attack on the ball and his positioning. He runs to the right spots and works incredibly hard which is really impressive for a first year player. Will be a gun.
Howe
Had a great first half and was probably one of our best for mine to half time. First time this year that I've seen him really look as though he belongs. He's lightly built but he's not afraid to put his body on the line, seems to read the flight pretty well and also reads the play. Did get caught out ball watching a little at one stage but as with any youngster it'll be reviewed and he'll learn plenty from it.
O'Brien
Didn't impact the scoreboard at all but what he did do was attack the footy and provide some really good pressure in both the forward and defensive halves. I didn't realise how agile he was to be honest, no one was game to take him on and he was able to apply a lot of pressure and force a quick kick out of defense. Probably could have had a shot or 2 at goal but missed a relatively easy mark (from where I was sitting, may look different on replay) and dished off the free kick he won with the tackle on the boundary line. His disposal is also very good and assured. The coaches may want him to hit the scoreboard (then again they may not care) and I think that'll come with a few more games under the belt and a 2 tall defense to free up Gibson and settle the structure down back.
Langford
His stats weren't impressive but his impact cannot be denied. What he does so well is that if he thinks he can get his hands on the ball he goes and does exactly that. He flings himself at the ball, rips it out of opposition hands and flails around in a pack with 3 guys hanging off him in a desperate bid to win the ball. He's the kind of inside midfielder that gives his all and leaves the ground without anything left in the tank. His disposal was poor but I'd say 50% of his disposals were just quick kicks from a congested area where we'd otherwise see another stoppage or rolling maul. I agree that he needs to work on his disposal but at the same time I think at this stage he makes us a better side.
Shiels
The tackle machine, 9 in the last quarter and he stood out like a sore thumb. The tiges supporter sitting next to me couldn't believe how many times he was involved in a strong tackle. Ended with 16 tackles but when the game was on the line he was like a fly on dogshit. He really worked his way into the game also and probably played his best game for the year for us.

That's about it, plenty of others I could mention but bed awaits.
Fremantle next week, interesting to see who is unlucky to get dropped.
Agree with all of that other than the comment about Duryea.

Think he has been super composed this year and one of our most consistent players.

watching the replay - think lewis may be working his way back in to some form
brand - what a fantastic debut - could easily keep shoey out
TOB- did some really nice things, seems to have great clean hands, and composure, play him all year
hartung was fantastic, he is a gem
howe was very good, can see him becoming a real solid player
mccevoy definitely plays his role, better than some on here give him credit for....may lose in the hitouts but his marking has been great this year...i think very important for our structure
lovell was really impressive too, especially in close....
gee gunston is a great player....

can not wait for Rough to come back in....!!! will make a massive difference

Thought Hartung had a really good game. Stepped up when Richmond got their 2 goal break in the 3rd quarter. He was one of the players who lifted their intensity.

Big upside for TOB, Brand, Howell and Lovell. Sicily will need to do more to keep his place but is at least providing a relief marking option on wing/halfback. We have to give all of these guys more games, Box Hill minutes just won't bring them up to speed.

We gave away 3 consecutive goals in the 3rd coming out of defence with poor kicks by Gibbo, Stratts and Dureya, kicks were to the disadvantage of smaller/outnumbered Hawks. Better options were either not there or not spotted. For whatever reason we're not yet able to move the ball as fluidly out of D50 as we have in the past.

Hawks a work in progress thus far, with better things to come I hope. Roughie may make a difference but he'll be coming from a long way back, would rather back better performances on further improvement and integration of the next generation players.

Watched the game today as I was on a plane when it was on.

Agree on sentiments re Langford. Stats painted a picture but he was good. His intensity and agression is needed.

Yep, TOB clearly ahead of schoey on 2016 output. Was impressed by his quick hands and composure in the clinches last night.

I thought he was ok.

He doesn't panic like Schoey does down back.

Not sure what the team looks like with all injuries back.

I'd prefer Brand down back than the other two folks down back or up front.

Last night, they all had to be a major part of the engine.

This experience is invaluable. INVALUABLE. They all would have come off the ground feeling as though they truly contributed in a major way, and a game like that is worth 10 games in terms of development.
Bob Murphy commented on nearly that exact same thing on the ABC yesterday. Team building is fine, but if you'e being thrashed by ten goals each week it instils mediocrity. Winning, like the Hawks did, with significant numbers of youngsters, will do more for their development than a half dozen losses.

Was disappointed with TO. No use being amazing below your knees if you cant contest over head. Sicily was great. Presented strongly and more than once he was our only forward contesting the high ball. TO is 193cms and could not out mark Morris. He is miles off it.

He's a smart man, Bob Murphy... well, so long as he keeps agreeing with me. ;)

I don't know if it's been mentioned in here or the game day thread, but did any notice what seemed to be a concerted effort to get stuck into Daniel Rioli whenever he was at the bottom of the pack?
On probably half a dozen occasions he was wrapped up and one or two of our tacklers would be in his ear for an extra few seconds before getting up for the ball up.
Im sure some people won't like it, but I think it's a great sign of the unsociable Hawks returning, targeting the weak links.

They may have been suggesting he's too good for that crap club :) plenty of hair ruffling going on after the final siren

Gibbo ignored Birchall wide open on the wing and went to the other more congested side (favoring his left side) turning it over and costing us a goal.

And "Janitor" the mess cleaner upper Mitchell sitting in the coaches box. maybe a stroke of genius to the the architect stand back and anylise the process a bit

Maybe something like "You've got a long way to go to be the best Rioli on this park, mate"
