The onus is on Clarko to allow the boys to attack and play some corridor footy, Clarko in his old age has become Ross Lyon like in creating density on the field and playing safe in order to stop oppo scoring. We are so bad at hitting the scoreboard, hard to believe it's our footy club tbh.

It’s interesting how defensively strong this team has become. At about the midpoint of the year it was obvious that the defense could play a special game. The fact that Hawthorn is the leader by about half a track in preventing opposition backline chains to a goal is the stat which really highlights this for me. According to the squiggle Hawthorn is the clear defensive standout, approaching swans 2005 quality.

What I particularly like, however, is that this outcome is achieved not through mindless flooding, as per Roos/Lyon, but by a really effective zone, especially though the midfield, and Sicily able to float in the defense as per Gibbo in the days of old.

Since the season’s midpoint the quality of f50 entries has improved as well. We’re still kicking for shit but are getting much more dangerous entries. I was never sure if the issue was poor entries or poor forward line patterns (I leaned toward the forward line not running/positioning well instead of the mids delivering poorly) but whatever the reason it’s improved. Entries are far more dangerous now.

If/when the forwards start converting 60% of their shots for goal (as opposed to the current 48%) then the hawks will be both smothering and high scoring. Hawthorn will go from averaging 10.8 goals and 11.15 behinds a game to 13.17 goals and 8.78 behinds. That takes the average points scored from 75.95 to 87.77 with no further change to gameplay needed. Average score against is 74.35, giving us a comfortable two goal margin with just a little straighter kicking.

And kicking for goal is contagious. Everyone seems to lift at the same time. Poppy just kicked a few. Breust was looking dangerous. There’s a real chance that this team can still be dangerous this year and definitely so next year.

okay so I have been away over the weekend, have stepped back in with absolutely no clue the last post I saw but was a couple of days ago. Anything new or more updated? or is it 6 pages of the same? Will save me a lot of time at work looking through it all if anyone can assist with a brief run down

Clarko's gone from Pep to Mou.

We are a bit of a shittruck side at the moment. Lack polish and class so I don't mind bringing sides down to our level and grinding them down. At the very least it helps to instill a hard edge and team defence mentality in the young kids growing up.

Hopefully it doesn't kill any natural flair in these obviously talented youngsters.

Last year was very similar... Not having a crack at Clarko, whatever wins us games, just stating some facts. Hopefully with a stronger mid group and another key forward we will see scores increase.
Last year was a bit different in that we could play 7 defenders & seek to rebound from there + we had Tom Mitchell, but I agree - Clarko favours a dour defensive style that supports a measly defensive 6 more than a flamboyant attacking midfield

I like TOB down back also and he’s developing into a genuine swingman. That said he’s looked pretty good up forward this year too. He ripped Geelong a few new arseholes and was very solid in s**t conditions against GWS. Wouldn’t hate seeing him in the same forward line with Lewis and Patton. We did fairly well with Buddy, Roughy and Hale pinch hitting in the forwards. It would be fun to see opposition defences have to figure out where they send their defenders if we had Lewis, Patton, TOB and Gunston all there.
Timmy O has gone from boy-to-man in the space of about 5 weeks. Think it coincides with the facial hair.

Yep. They got fresh mail today too.
That mail is exactly the same as last years from the same poster.

"If Shiel leave GWS, it will be to Carlton.".

Lets wait and see.

If Carlton give Coniglio a deal at the money they've been throwing around, it will be identical to what happened with Judd. An overestimation of where their list is at that will decimate their list profile and leave them at the bottom of the ladder again. I have no qualms with that being the reason we miss out on a player.

Also, on Patton, he is a better fit with McEvoy than Ceglar is. Patton is a more natural forward and can play the resting and marking forward and occasional ruckman role very well. I don't necessarily think that it will be a full time displacement of Lewis from FF as others do.

If we put Patton in a centre bounce as ruck relief we would have rocks in our heads. Stay at home full forward is the way with him imo

Look at how that turned out. They were played.
If this was the case again, I think the blues board would hold the record for the greatest melt of all time, with their supposed ITK posters dragged out into the street and lynched

I think that is a large part due to the circumstances we have found ourselves in this year.

Once we are more competitive (hopefully dominant) out of the middle it will allow Clarko to loosen the reigns a little.

Clarko had the boys playing similar unattractive safe football in 05 / 06 to stem the flow,
whilst giving the young guys exposure, similar to our game style, doesn't look that great
at present, but he will release the shackles at some point, when he feels we are ready.

Why would you leave a Cameron coached GWS to go to a Voss coached Carlton????

Promising lists yes, but an inferior coach. I don't get this decision making.

For all the promise in their list they have as many concerns with older players as we do, and their kids have shown no more than ours in reality.

That’s 7 that are 30+ for season 2020, how is it that different to us? By start of 2020 our list dynamic may be younger than theirs and we would be outperforming them, as has been the case for decades upon decades now.

Cogs decision should be easy if it’s winning flags he’s in the game for.

If Cogs was happy to go to Carlton with Teague as coach, then Carlton would have already have given Teague the senior job. He's winning games and has A LOT of public support. They were CHANTING his name at the function last week.

The way they're stalling on Teague and the senior appointment is interesting
