They met in two consecutive grand finals in the 1980s and I can expect the Hawks and Blues to form the next rivalry in footy

After the '86 and '87 grand finals, I definitely see Hawthorn and Carlton emerging as the next great rivalry of the '80s. Kernahan kicking goals down one end of the ground, Dermie the other, premierships on the line...

In the 2020's? Meh, not so much...

The rivalry is still there it's merely dormant, similar to our rivalry with Hawthorn which was dormant from 1990 to 2007.
All it takes is meeting in a big final.
Richmond and Collingwood is another example, went dormant after 1980 and reignited in 2018 when they met in the preliminary final.

We'll see at the end of the season i guess. Hawthorn exceeded a lot of peoples expectations, and had a very good season in 2024.

Was it a flash in the pan though? There will be a bit more expectation surrounding Hawthorn this year as well.

Think we'll see a lot more flash in the pan seasons and finals campaigns, the comp is v even.
