Please don’t bring Barrett’s sliding doors rubbish here. That’s not the Hawthorn footy club in the media.

That’s a desperate article, trying to get clicks every week.

We reacted with a change to the game style. That there is no doubt. We still gunned but the measured way we went forward, for the most part worked. We executed much better.
North being without LDU and Simpkin worked in our favour around the stoppages. But who knows what Maguiness would have done.
We all know we are extremely desperate for quality KP’s forward and back. That is clear. Lewis would help the forward structure immensely.
The continued form of Day and the input of Brockman, Moore, Sic, Frost (at least yesterday) CJ and MacKenzie combined with the inclusion of Scrimm made us much better.
It is only one match and it was North, but we definitely looked far better.
Don't forget Harry

Let’s not get carried away, our forward line was cobbled together (we are not going to be able to rely every week on our only forward talls in on testing ruckmen Meek and Reeves), but the ability to construct a gameplan and more importantly, stick to it and carry it out, for the most part, proved formidable. Congrats Sam and coaching squad who did not demonstrate such professionalism and preparedness to adjust in the first two weeks.

I’m not at all sure that we changed the game plan very much at all. We just executed a lot better this week.

No one develops a new game plan in a week.

Are we expected to believe that the game plan we want to develop, the one that we know will take a long time, was jettisoned, but a completely new one we decided to try this week worked immediately?

Come on now...

We played a much worse team, and tightened up a lot on things that we didn't execute well in weeks one and two.

The little run on that North got where we lost a bit of confidence looked a lot like rounds 1 and 2.

Kane really pumping up Sam’s tyres on the AFL app ‘round so far’ video.

Bit of a bromance forming.
I love it tbh. Kaneo can be a bit of a knobhead, as we know, but listening to them have a cheeky sparring session on the radio every week is always enjoyable.

Barrett on the Sunday footy show claiming we didn’t “make a compelling case” and didn’t try hard enough to keep Gunston
Barrett seems to have zero genuine sources left, as happens to journalists who get too big and burn their bridges. Don't reckon we had a snowballs chance of convincing Gunners to stay once his dad passed and any report otherwise is bs.

It's conclusion based story making.
"Gunston left as a FA, therefore Hawthorn couldn't have made a compelling case". Yeah, that will work.
"Hawthorn lost the first 2 rounds of the year, therefore they're not going to win any other games." Yeah, that will get clicks.

Literally how he writes his Sliding Doors crap.

IF... Gunston left as a FA
THEN... Hawthorn couldn't have made a compelling case

IF... Hawthorn lost the first 2 rounds of the year
THEN... they're not going to win any other games

If.... I have a beef with the Hawks, because they understand how inept I am
THEN... I must try to snipe them at every opportunity, because my self esteem really isn't that great

IF: I’m a journalist…..

THEN: I think I have the right to say or write whatever I want, without being held accountable or rebutted, regardless of whether it is incorrect or factual or if it is the result of my own jaded predisposition toward organisations or individuals.

Sad but true.

Listen to Bucks.

His analysis and knowledge i ssecond to none and he never gets personal. He always errs towards being positive too.

There is good analysis out there in all mediums. These dickheads though, they are just there for shock value. My mates needle me a bit about Hawthorn but nobody actually thinks they are tanking. They are a minority opinion given a loud voice. Its how the world works now.
He’s very good. It’s a shame he wasn’t a premiership captain or coach

I think the reason people are bothered more than usual by Barrett is that he's an AFL payrolled journalist who has spent the better part of this year petitioning that we lose draft picks for 1, the handling of the racism investigation and 2, tanking. If this is just a random journalist, who cares, but this is a guy who is head journo for AFL.com.au and is making it his specific crusade to push this narrative.

Especially when we've had Sydney finish down the bottom 2 in the COVID year with so many 'injuries' at the end of the season, and get an early pick (McDonald) AND get an academy pick in the top 5 (two top 5 picks...) and media says nothing, and acts so amazed 'WOW SYDNEY HAVE SOME GREAT YOUNG TALENT' without ever once mentioning their ridiculous competitive advantage with academies, and the fact they got basically priority picks like the old system in that year, should have highlighted how unfair it was. Also Geelong do a salary 'dump' but don't actually have to take on the salary in the same contract and split it over several years, and get gifted pick 7 when it should be their turn for rebuilding pain and again 'crickets' and no AFL investigation (could you imagine if we did that after our era..... they tried to make out we rorted the system when Vickery came over on his contract by 'rigging' it to enforce a Trigger clause... ). Yet Hawthorn just decide to rebuild with no added advantages, and they cry foul and have the audacity to say its tanking and we are doing something unfair after two games.. when we are just making a hard, brave choice that most clubs and coaches don't dare to do. AFTER TWO GAMES. I guarantee you we will never finish at the bottom the same amount that Melbourne, Carlton did or even North have just done (who also traded out many senior players when they finished bottom)... After this year (which I think will be bottom 2 or 3 and a chance to finish last), we won't be in spoon contention again. One season. But this is the one time the media bring out the tanking word, and not just a suggestion but aggressive attack the club over it after 2 games of football. Outrageous.

It has been the most pathetic reporting I've seen of the club, and that is saying something.

Real questions go unanswered because the game runs the media that covers the game. Don't tow the line? You won't get access.

The AFL controls footy media pretty much the way Putin controls Russian news, right down to running its own State TV and employing many journalists with decent public profiles.

The control has gotten tighter and tighter, and the AFL media product has gotten more and more pisseak as a result.

It is extremely poor with no accountability but that’s the world we live in for all journalism. Whoever pays the bills sets the narrative and the dancing marionettes puppet anything to serve the master. In some ways it is hard to blame them people ultimately will behave according to how their performance is measured. All we can do is not click, easier said than done.

That's my old world, but with most media outlets it's honestly more the opinions of the owners that set the narrative for what is reported and how. There is a surpring level of independence even accounting for that.

Unless the business model is cable news subscription.

The AFL is a different beast, they have their own media reporting on their own interests.

This is a level above advertising influencing editorial. It's the organization running the show telling you about the show, and cutting off access to anyone who might want to write about it in an impartial way.

Good post, I think a lot of supporters have paranoia regarding the media and our club, but these are all ver valid points.
Good post
