Don't blame the messenger, we've got form for this s**t.

For sure. We even had administrators in the past ban Aboriginal players from being recruited. The club had a very poor attitude until Bateman, really.

But the stories we have heard about Clarko have been him travelling to remote parts of Australia to visit families and learn about the players' culture so this is a very different read.

If what is claimed is true then for sure these people need to be booted. Fagan included.

But at the moment they are claims. Not evidence. And the accused havent said their part.

What’s happened basically mirrors the stolen generation. Separating families, destroying relationships, isolating indigenous people. Yes there’s no slur calling, Adelaide/Collingwood level stuff but this form of racism is more institutional and arguably far more insidious.
I moreso just read it as people in authority manipulating young men/people that are malleable and able to be coerced. See it happen all the time in business/life.

I think it'll depend on if this is only limited to indigenous players. If it turns out it happened rampant across the playing list it probably speaks to different systemic issues (not racism but still horrendous). If it turns out that it's just indigenous players, there's definitely racist overtones for sure. Will need to see how it unfolds.

Either way it makes for shocking reading.

Alright, if we can ignore the strange man tilting at windmills over there and focus on actual details, it's interesting that three people are named outright and no more.

Plenty of other coaches went through those ranks, including the Dogs and Eagles premiership coaches. You'd hope all parties are seeking as much information as possible on any knowledge or involvement.

Yes thats what I said.

Its what all journos do when rushing a story to beat their competition.

BTW they released a completely one sided story. Is that good journalism in your eyes?

We have no idea the foundation of any of the claims nor do we have any response from anyone accused. Again, is that good journalism ?
Know it's your club but this is well past 'if there's smoke there's fire'. Just because you don't like the content doesn't mean you can question the integrity of the journalist.

Plus I strongly doubt you provide the same level of scrutiny for Murdoch owned media when they blatantly are always one sided.

I would argue that an institution pressuring termination of a players' unborn child or pressuring a player to end a relationship on account of said player being indigenous is about as racist as it gets.
Wait and see how rampant this is imo. If its solely targeted against indigenous players i can see that angle, but if its happening across the whole club probs not. Have to see how it unfolds.

You didn’t have an indigenous player between 1966-1999.

Absolutely shocking. Devastated for those players and families. This is the worst thing I've ever read in AFL football.

Forget the Essendon drugs scandal, this is worse. Dumbfounded.

Agreed.

On a purely selfish level I wish these allegations came out either a week or two earlier or next week. I feel like the Grand Final is going to be a bit drowned out now since this is such a big story.

Absolutely disgusted but not surprised.

I'd bet my left nut that this would be rife across all clubs let alone workplaces. I know of colleagues of mine who roll their eyes at the annual cultural awareness training but this is the reason why we must have it.

Racism is a blight on society.

If this blows up like it should hard to see Kennet, Clarkson or Fagan surviving.. and if the AFL were aware of this prior to North signing Clarkson then surely they are culpable…

Not just that. How much did the leadership group of Hawthorn back then know? I mean think of all the former leadership group Hawthorn players who are now in coaching or media roles.

"Clarkson just leaned over me and demanded that I needed to get rid of my unborn child and my partner. I was then manipulated and convinced to remove my SIM card from my phone, so there was no further contact between my family and me. They told me I’d be living with one of the other coaches from that night onwards.
He felt he had no choice. "He told me to kill my unborn kid."

What in the name of living fck balls ?!.

Sickening if true.

Beyond comprehension.

This doesn't seem like a rushed story. Jackson does investigative pieces.

Hawthorn commissioned First Nations consultants to learn more about their experience at the club...this raised disturbing historical allegations. This story is the allegations.

And Hawthorn sent it straight to the AFL Integrity Department after learning about how damning the allegations were

Relax. They're allegations. It's not a 'guilty until proven innocent' system.

If they did that now they would owe him $5m and it would count to their cap.

I would hope they wait until the actual report is released and those accused have had their chance to defend themselves.

Let's be clear: The whole 'If allegations proven to be substantiated' preface should go without saying here. That's how these discussions work. Everyone is currently working off the sentence starter that 'if he is in the wrong then...'. Kinda weird that needs clarifying otherwise every comment would only be 'okay, noted. I will update my thoughts once there is further investigation'.

Let's be even clearer, if North haven't called an emergency meeting to agree to rescind his contract should the allegations be proven then there is a catastrophic failure and no they wouldn't need to compensate him.

Labelling Jackson in with other journos tells me you don't know what kind of stories he writes.

He ain't competing with anyone, because he touches stories no one else does.

Fagan has been nothing but great with building Brisbane's indigenous culture and supporting the players, including young Dad's. Still, reeks to me of a man knowing what was happening is wrong and against his core beliefs, but not speaking up against his good mate. Makes him just as guilty for letting it happen.

Very sad state of affairs for the victims.
