Minister for Corrections, Lisa Singh MP, said today that a visit to Risdon Prison by players and officials from AFL club Hawthorn provided role models that have a positive influence on prisoners.

Hawthorn players talked with inmates about their careers and then took to the prison football oval for a social kick.

“I believe events like today’s achieve three important goals for prisoners, Ms Singh said.

The blurb from Hawks:

an unfortunate turn of phrase from Shiels: "It was my first time at a place like that. Walking in, you see the big gates and barbed wire fences but once you get in there everyone is quite nice. We had a kick of the footy with the boys there and I didn't expect them to have as many skills as they did. They touched us up on occasions."

hmm, touched up in prison? No thanks !!

I think its great that the Hawks cover all bases as far as the community is concerned. These guys have made a mistake in life as we all do ( in varying degrees of course ) and are paying the price, the club provides a good experience to these guys and no doubt would lift the morale.
The club continues to impress me with innovative ideas, not just on field and financially but to the well being of communities Australia Wide and overseas as well - Great Work Hawks

Matt Suckling, Ryan Schoenmakers, Liam Shiels, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Michael Osborne all went to the prison.

Brief run down of the day's activities for all the player groups.

Think you'll find this group was at the Ashley detention center, not Risdon...

That 3rd pic of the Hun's gallery made me laugh... Osbourne taking a hanger over some poor incarcerated teen...:D Sent his cap flying, knee up in the back... The guy obviously takes his footy seriously.

Very funny.

No doubt Sheedy will be taking notes and will probably add this bloke to his GWS list.

Prison Warder are you Noose?;)

What was it screws v inmates game, get to even a few scores out of the uniform?
NO Bulls mate just prisoners V prisoners elbows knees coat hangers no rules alot of blood but alot of Fun Dipper this was in my Youth mate by ahh the memories....;)

id love the club to have an intra-club match at the prison, with the inmates spectating around the ground. would be possibly the most vocal and intimidating practice match crowd ever, and get the players in good nick for the season
