Don't get me wrong. Even without GAJ Geelong are an immensely talented outfit. But nobody would dare to accuse them of being possessed of dangerous pace.

And yet they made Hawthorn look slow. Geez.

Hawks will embarrass a few low ranked sides, and might get over the occasional better team on the back of their top few having blinders.

Contenders? Nope.

You mean beating Melbourne, Richmond and last years wooden spooners West Coast didn't impress you?

Pace is hardly a necessity to win premierships, as you said in your first post with regards to Geelong, one of the greatest sides of the modern era might I add. We still have a lot of improvement set for us during the year, and a lot of stuff to change, and of course this looks more evident when we're losing. I'd be happy for us to be slow if we were winning games like the ones today. :D

Yes, but Geelong always had a better spread of classy ball users and contested ball winners.

Cheers absfab i'll take note.

Its more the fact that they have the weapons to be contenders- when they are on they can fire but they are too inconsistent at this stage.

Maybe not, but I notice you waited until AFTER we played the Cats to make that statement. Typical Carlton cowardice.
.

I did in fact post several days ago that the potentially most significaant outcome of this match was if one side were exposed for lack of pace. Question answered.

You know the funny thing? It's been the media and bookies carrying on about that rubbish, I haven't heard anyone from Hawthorn saying it.

You don't seriously believe this? Bookies and media follow the dumb money.

Oh really?

You obviously haven't been listening too closely then ...

HAWTHORN'S list is "amazing", if the team doesn't win a flag soon it is a "waste" and if the Hawks don't make the top four this year "we are kidding ourselves," star forward Lance Franklin has boldly declared.

"With the talent we've got and with the group we've got, it will be a waste not to win another flag in the next three years," Franklin said.

The result of this game means precisely **** all at this stage of the season.

All it provides is bragging rights to a supporter group that is still smarting from the '08 GF loss.

Hawks looked very good at different stages of the game, finding some alternative goal scorers with Franklin being well held. The margin wasn't huge and I would still consider them a serious contender. The injury to Rioli is a worry though.

Not saying I think they are a contender.

However, how does how Hawthorn matchup against Geelong, have anything to do with how they matchup against Collingwood?

I agree with this.

Even I wonder why some people in the media continue to talk us up and create hype. We are ok, but we have serious deficiencies and we are very inconsistent, even within games.

So no, I do not expect a flag this year and today did nothing to change my mind.

However if Carlton fans want to spend their time creating threads and gloating about us not being contenders, then that is up to them. Personally I think they'd be better off trying to think of ways to beat Collingwood.

I'd still rather have our recent history than most other clubs.

Well done! Ground breaking stuff - player talks up teams chances.

Jimmy Jess was doing that back in the early 1980's (or so my dad told me).

I think there were some massive positives to come from Hawthorn today.

IMO they are too reliant on too few players. Franklin, Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Sewell, Rioli, Roughy. They often seem to be carried by these guys, but today only Mitchell and Sewell (great games from both) fired, and they still got within 20 points of the Cats.

Gibson was solid, Birchill looks like he might get back some of his 08 form, Guerra and Bateman were team lifting at various stages, and Shiels and Savage were impressive. Also Suckling, who was probably their no.1 player.

The defence and ruck departments are issues though, but I think Hawthorn showed enough to suggest they're a threat

No one is a contender in Round 5 you noob. Hawthorn have plenty of time to work on the areas of their game that need improving. Just like every other club.

Shhhh. Don't tell the OP, you'll ruin his/her buzz.

Agree with the Ruck more than the defence, Ruck issues created clearance dominance for Geelong - a big burst of it in the last quarter - that even the best defence would have had trouble coping with.

Sorry? Was the reason for posting what I did not as obvious as mud? Really?

Umm, ok, well in case not, let me explain it very simply:

Adelaide Hawk was rubbishing someone else's post and implying that nothing had come out of the Hawks' camp in terms of anyone there talking up their chances as a contender.

So I found an example of their star player (well, occasionally he stars anyway) not only talking up their chances as a contender but going a hell of a lot further than that. Given I found it in less than a minute on google, I'm guessing I could have found other instances of it happening if I'd looked hard enough too.

"We're kidding ourselves if we think we are not going to be a top-four side" was another thing Franklin said btw.

So shoot the messenger for correcting him if you must, but I can't help it if your fellow Hawthorn supporter was wrong.

Quality call CmF. :thumbsu:

At the start of the season I thought there was 5 teams worthy of seriously challenging the Pies. Hawks being one of them. OP just too naive to appreciate the fact that the season is a marathon and not a sprint. I wouldn't be surprised if the Hawks turn up the heat at the business end of the season like they did in 2008. Pies are just building up their confidence with every win. It's IF they become complacent at the wrong time, which will be the killer blow. Otherwise a worthy back-to-back candidate if their winning ways continues.

I seem to recall Buddy Franklin saying exactly that earlier this year
