Other than Rioli yo'd be hard pressed to say the others were better than Wingard who is an out and out all Australian star.

Things aren't all lost - If we could snare Wingard and a Dom Tyson type we'd have improved our midfield and added some class up front. There's also Scrimshaw and Finlayson as possible HBF's to release Hardwick, Burton and Sicily to different roles

I must over rate DS compared to most posters on here. Makes no sense to me that we bailed on the deal over 2 first rounders.

In my view it was a bigger gamble to invest 2 first rounders to get a bloke who had barely played for 2 years and had big question marks over his knee vs a bloke who made the all Australian side in 2017.

The only reason I can think of as to why we would walk away from the DS trade for 2 first rounders (assuming he had indeed agreed to come to us) is we have committed to using one or both picks elsewhere. Ie either we are very keen on a draftee that is sufficiently left field that we are confident he wont be taken in the top dozen or so picks, or GW and his team are working their magic on a higher priority than DS.

I can't believe that people think Smith, Hill and Burton are better than Wingard. To begin with completely different players - Smith and Hill are Wingers - din fine ones at that and gave us the ability to cut teams to ribbons. Burton is a third year player who has shown a bit. But Wingard is an goal kicking forward who can win matches like Rioli did. In fact he's the one closest to him. Though Cyril had more tricks and could make everyone else look like they were standing still.

I hear what your saying overall but I just wanted to clear up that we didn't use 2 1st rounders on Jaeger.

Adelaide & Essendon both missed the finals last year after making it the year before.

I don't think it is unreasonable to say we may slip a bit next year with a harder draw and opposition teams improving.

Don't get me wrong I rate Brad Hill and was livid when we traded him for pick 23, I still think Wingard is the better player however they are completely different types of players though.

I reckon Winguard is better in his role than Shiel is in his. Small forwards with midfield minutes are important in today’s game. At least five of the last six premiers. Even the AA selectors are realising

Fair call HODGEYROAD ... 2 first rounders was me using short hand for the below for the sake of brevity!

In receiving O’Meara, Hawthorn sent Pick 10 from the 2016 draft and its second-round pick for the 2017 draft to the Suns. That came after handing St Kilda three draft selections (Picks 23 and 36 in 2016 and its first pick of 2017) while gaining only two (Picks 10 and 68) in return.
