Lewis and Mitchell would have been on double what the combined Hodge, Gibbo and Burgoyne were on.

I find that questionable. (talking about their Hawthorn salaries, not what they will be paid at WCE/Mel)

Also not sure how much those other 3 will give you in 2017 (and definitely not beyond that), vs 2 guys still playing at a very high level.

Lewis and Mitchell both had regular contracts - Mitchell was on 1 year contracts, Lewis still had 1 year of a 3 year contract to go, then when Hawthorn re-signed Hodge, Gibbo and Burgoyne they admitted to taking big pay cuts.

Do you even BigFooty? Outgoing players are always on way more than incoming or existing players.

Sydney created cap space by getting rid of $300k players like Mark Seaby and Jared Moore, but Adam Goodes, Josh Kennedy etc. play for love.

With Bradley Hill likely to depart for Fremantle and veterans Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Shaun Burgoyne and Josh Gibson taking pay cuts to play on in 2017, the Hawks are understood to have the salary cap space to accommodate O'Meara, Mitchell and Vickery.

Lewis indicated that in certain circumstances he’d sacrifice his own pay cheque for the betterment of the club and would be open to the idea if it meant landing O’Meara.

Lewis said while he’d never personally made a financial sacrifice in his time at Hawthorn, rival clubs had offered him greater incentives to jump ship. He could have been making more money elsewhere but chose to stay in order to chase premierships.

But also:

“If a player was to come in and they strip other players of money, but then that player who’s coming in becomes the highest-paid player at the club, there’s obviously circumstances that you probably would not do it,” Lewis told Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

Totes awks.

Its not without irony that when Melbourne summarily sacked McDonald they were broadly criticised for doing so for ripping apart their heart and soul. Now everybody is doing it and they are now on the other side of the fence, picking up Lewis.

Demons and Eagles have got the biggest steals in trade history. I can't remember the last time the 2 best players from a club went for a set of steak knives. Sure, Hawks need to unload some cap space, but my god.

Mitchell and Lewis are the 2016 B&F top 2, not the 2 best players. Steal definitely, but there's a distinction.

Mitchell would be top 3 for 2017 (no idea if he is considering playing beyond 2017), Lewis probably 5-10. Lewis I also think is on the decline so if he stuck around 2-3 years would fall into in the bottom half a dozen or so in the best 22.

Lewis may have finished second in the Hawks B&F but he has diminished a lot as a player over the last couple of seasons. It'll be extremely doubtful that he will play the entire length of the Melbourne contract. He's either going to be playing out the last year in the magoos or his body will break down and not stand up to football at all. He's already slower than a turtle.

Mitchell's trade is the head scratcher!

Some odd moves, Hawthorn giving up

- Sam Mitchell
- Jordan Lewis
- Brad Hill
- 2016 first round selection (14)
- 2016 second round selection (36)
- 2017 first round selection

For a return of

- Tom Mitchell
- Pick 10

Don't forget the pick in the 40's and 60's

Vital picks that could unearth the next........... Zac Dawson :)

This is all riding on them being able to get JoM without giving up another quality player - and, more importantly, that he will be healthy and gets back to his best form.

For all we know, JoM's development may just completely bypass the 2 years of missed footy, and he becomes Gary Ablett 2.0 for the next 10 years. If that happens, then these moves will be genius and the Hawks probably win another 3 flags.

But if GC continue to play hardball (I really wish they do), or if he never really overcomes 2 years of lost footy - then this could be a really difficult transition after their elite period.

It was the wise move. It is only one more season and we have blooded many kids. The youngsters will learn from having experience around the place. Hawthorn is by far the greatest sporting organisation in Australia since 1960.

2016 was a free hit for us. We still managed to be relevant and were a kick after the siren away from another preliminary final.

Our record speaks volumes.

KOLOKOTRONIS

Who will the youngsters learn from now?

Also, call me when you've made the finals 30 years in a row.

They have a guy to do all this. He's not called Graham Wrong.

They're bringing in Mitchell, Vickery and O'Meara this year and Fyfe or Martin next. Possibly both.

It's all part of the plan. Signing guys up mid year was just a ruse.

The Kool aid has made its way to Perth too ;)

Not since Hird have a set of supporters been so delusional like the Hawks at the moment.

I guess Hawks are just making plays for free agents only. Next year, they'll unload Hodge and another player for pick 85 and 106, and suddenly have millions in cap space to offer 2 guns lucractive deals, and within 2 seasons Hawks will have acquired O'meara, Mitchell, Fyfe and Martin and win the flag in 2018.

No one will take Hodge at 33. Freeing up cap space in 2016 doesn't really help the 2017 trade period either.
