The results are in. Hawthorn's best first year player is:

Xavier Ellis. Yep, you read correctly. Weighing in at 35 kilos, Ellis played a full 13 games this season. Averaging 11 disposals and 0.2 goals per game this year, Ellis was streets ahead of his nearest rivals, which included Mitch Thorp (1 game, 5 disp) Matt Little (1 game, 6 disp), Travis Tuck (1 game, 13 disp) and Gary Moss (1 game, 10 disp). In another year, these numbers may have been enough to claim the best first-year player award at Hawthorn, but with such strong competition this year, Ellis was the obvious choice. Beau Dowler would consider himself unlucky to not be included in voting, after having played 3 stellar games over the last 2 seasons. Thomas Murphy also finally hit double figures, playing 12 games over the last 3 seasons. Hawthorn assure us, however, that every one will be a gun.

You know they could have had Pendlebury...?

Could have had Joel Selwood too. :p

i would be interested to know how many games geelong's albert namatjira played this year?

you know that new kid that you picked up with your no.25 pick from the Northern Territory. He is apparently a freak. I would be interested to know his statistics at senior level this year.

i would also like to know the average disposal per game of travis varcoe this year. pretty sure he might have been taken very early in the draft in 2005. the games i saw of geelong this year he really knew how to find the footy. He would have surely averaged at least 15-16 disposals per game.

Also how's stepehen owen and ryan gamble going?

taken quite early with picks 35 and 47 in 2005, did they see much of it this year?

Oh, Nathan Djerrkura. He was suffering from hamstring injuries at times this year. Varcoe was an emergency for the grand final side, Owen broke his collarbone in the VFL finals, and Gamble was another one who was injured half the year. Nevermind though, with the exception of Owen, they all won a premiership too...in the VFL, but thanks for asking. :thumbsu:

Must be scary for opposition fans when you consider we won the flag by a record margin, yet still had players like Egan, Blake, Varcoe, Djerrkura, Gamble, Davenport (who will be elevated off the rookie list...or at least should be) and Hawkins waiting in the wings.

Strangely quiet from hawks fans here. Kooley should keep his mouth closed for a while, his team does not deserve any draft selectons, blues are even more disgraceful than the hawks and that says something.

Its not even worth discussing the Blues draft blunders, thats not speculation, thats just fact. Russell, Hartlett, Walker...Gibbs the squib. Now they're trying to piss Kennedy off (# 4 pick a few years back) because he's a proven failure.

Luckily disgracful tanking gets you nowhere when your recruiters have NFI. :)

Selwood > Gibbs

Selwood > Gibbs

And how good do you think Gibbs would look if he'd played this year for Geelong. Not putting Selwood down, he was fantastic and deserves his accolades. But put Gibbs in a team with a modicum of talent and he would shine. Unfortunately he has been playing with a pack of Duds.

Cograts to Xav on winning the award. That's about all that needs to be said. Bagging a bunch of first and second year players is about as low on the food chain as you get.

It's the problem with a lot of my threads. I haven't said anything that isn't true. There's nothing to argue with here :(

Wrong. Selwood became a permanant fixture in one of the best midfields in the league. The midfield wasnt helping him as much as he helped them, he was the one getting the clearance and putting his head over the pill. Gibbs the squib, was pulling out of contests, its not Carlton's fault he doesn't want to get the hard ball. But on second thoughts, Carlton doesn't care about winning that much, so maybe that mentality has rubbed off on him and it is their fault

As i said, Selwood well and truly earnt his spot. The Carlton side has no one willing to protect their younger softer bodied youngsters the way the Cats do. That is the difference. Selwood plays in a team of hard men. Gibbs is unprotected in a side filled with Marshmallows. With a bit more size and some spine out at Prinny Park we will all see what he is capable of.

Agreed, looking forward to seeing him at his best.

Same goes for those Hawks players mentioned, I hope they all get, and take, their chances, wouldn't wish failure on anyone. This isn't really a crack at them.

Obviously you didnt hear right. Xavier Ellis was our best first year player. He played 13 games. Damaging in the midfield, a bit unlucky when kicking goals...but he was still good..
