Hawthorns premiership hangover....

Hawthorn didnt win a flag because of talent, they won it because of tactics. 6 months later the coaches of the league planned a way to overcome this and Hawks have become ineffective.

2008 will be Clarksons premiership.

Anyone think it has anything to do with the fact Hawthorn can no longer rush behinds and their defensive zone has been exposed?

I'm tipping Hawthorn to lose to Richmond and Essendon to finish with 8 wins, that's the same as Essendon in '08 and we used more players than any other club in the competition.

An issue with the quality of depth down at Hawthorn perhaps?

Bottom line is ...Hawthorn will always be remembered as the 2008 Premiers.
If you were to ask me now .... I'd happily take a wooden spoon next year if we could only win the GF this year .......

this.

while this year has been woeful from all areas, we should only really improve from 09 with better preparation, new assistants with energy & tactics, less injuries & a fire in the belly to get some respect back.

One thing we will always have is the 08 flag.. how many of you have drunk from the cup recently? :p

hope saints win it.

I was happy enough to see them win in 08 but never again.
The majority of their supporters were ungracious big mouths.
They can suffer in the off season and suck it up I say.

If my team cant win it, I'd love to see the Saints or Doggies get up.

Well here we are- the Hawks didn't make the 8 after all - I would like to say "I told you so" but I always thought they would scrape in.

Comments (without gloating as my mob didn't make it either)

Injuries- didn't help, but as I have written 6000 times, was only one of many structural issues. Is the youth policy that reaped the 2008 premiership also partly responsible for the poor performance in 2009- ie. young bodies don't cope well with 25 game seasons.

Funny how footy smacks you when you whinge too much (Buddy was stiff IMO) - but the whinging and complaining on talkback and here sheesh!! However quickly got forgotten when a player did a similar thing back. Is it the offence or the player that goes down? Would I get more angry if someone belted Kirk vs Hall- absolutely.

Will the Hawks come to this year's trade table with realisitic value on their's and oppositions players. Hawks were gloating that Pelchin was a "legend" for holding out on the O'Keefe deal- but how ironic that "hard bodies" is what was sadly lacking this year. Further- would Zac Dawson have been delisted with hindsight?

As above did the Hawk's already have definciencies in the ruck and defence, but got covered by the strength of other "zones" in 2008?

Is Campbell Brown a dinosaur in today's game? We all (except bombers fans) love his aggression and take no prisoners approach, but if you can't get a kick, does it matter? How can he impact a game if they have taken so many physical aspects out?

In 2009 Hawks lost the so call architect of the zone (Viney) will Hardwick be as big of a loss?

Finally- there is still plenty of talent for the hawks to rebound in 2010 and I would expect them to make the 8, BUT- only if they can fix their defence and ruck stocks....quick.

lol clarkson and campbell brown throwing some manly tantrums at the end of a woeful season just capped off how I think of this club...

lol

You must lay in bed to the early hours of the morning thinking how the hell did the Hawks beat us in the 2008 GF with Croad and Young off for half the game, with Bateman injured, Brown injured, Hodge injured, Franklin injured, Lewis injured and with all the umpiring going Geelongs way. It really must burn. Ouch! Suck it up.

Youth policy didn't produce the 2008 premiership, a very fortunate run with injuries at the right time in the season allowed us to keep a very competitive team on the field during the finals and avoided exposing the shallow depth that was natural consequence of the youth policy.

This year we were not so lucky.

Have a look at the following link and sort the teams by average age:
http://afl.allthestats.com/teams/teamlistavgs.php

Those who think hawthorn overplayed the injury card this season are kidding themselves. When your list is this young, injuries are going to be a major issue when the guys coming in to replace hard bodies are 17/18 year olds (as was often the case). Even Geelong has shown that a few injuries down back can lead to a dramatic drop off in performance, and they have a lot more depth than Hawthorn.

I don't think Viney leaving has had anything to do with the zone crumbling, it again comes back to injuries, the zone took a reasonable amount of discipline to execute and a high degree of co-ordination between the members of the team implementing it. With young inexperienced players on the field and a lot of turnover in the starting team during the year, the cohesion required simply wasn't there.

Defence and Ruck is still going to be a concern, and if Croad doesn't return we'll still be exposed down back, although hopefully some of the other defenders will be available and fit, but structurally he'll still be missed. Our maligned Ruck division are also young and improving (Renouf and Taylor anyway), losing Max is a big disappointment, but hopefully the existing Rucks still have room for improvement.

It hurts not to make the finals , but we had no realistic chance to go deep into finals with the team we had available anyway. The coaching staff appear to have reached the same conclusion with Mark Williams played at Box Hill on the weekend instead of being rushed in to bolster our forward line in the Bombers clash. Early start to pre-season is probably the optimal outcome, although it hurts to admit it.

Any complacency after this years performance should be well and truly gone, hope to see a fitter and hungrier group next year. Assuming the injury aspect is kinder to Hawthorn in 2010, and some of the young developing players given a go this year start competing for spots with the regulars from 2008, then top 4 shouldn't be out of the question in 2010.

What has the writer of Bolero got to do with anything??
Keep crying those cold and bitter tears from 08...and get the hankies out for this year

Shocking season for the Hawkies. Hopefully we'll be much better next year.

Not sure why Browny and Clarko lost the plot after the Bombers game. I thought the hit was worth 2 weeks at most, that's football, sometimes people get knocked into next week, as long as it's not malicious, bit of a melee on the field is where it should end.

I'll be barracking for the Dogs and the Magpies this finals series.
