Hird barred by Channel 9 from appearing on Talking Footy

Hird and the EFC accepted Channel 7's request for Jim to appear on Talking Footy tonight. Hird called Channel 7 today to confirm his appearence ... HOWEVER at the ninth hour Channel 9 threated to sue Hird if he fronted up tonight on TF. Hirdy's bank account has already copped enough. Ironically, it was Hird's comments on TFS that handed them a whole lot of free publicity and RATINGS ... this is how Nein like to repay the favour? Buy threatening legal proceedings.

The EFC has a commercial arrangement with Channel 7. James Hird is the captain of the Essendon Football Club, but as he has a contract with Nine, he threatened not to appear on Channel 7 as the captain of the EFC.

Its real shame that this is what football has become.

Perhaps 7 should sue EFC for breach of contract. I'm sure they have a few $$ left in their war chest to pay another 'fine' and Eddie can 'break the exclusive and air an 'apology' from 9 to 7 on TFS

Dopey bugger shouldn't have signed the contract in the first place. Or at least demanded a bit more flexibility in it.

If thats the case tell James not to accept the cash 9 paid him to appear on their shows.

Hird took the cash so he has to honour the agreement.

The AFL aren't happy with Essendon going alone with their website. Has been one of the best commercial decisions the EFC has done. There would be quite a few clubs out there that would lament on signing a web-hosting contract with the AFL/Telstra.

I just don't believe footballers, especially captains, should be made exclusive to ANY television/radio network. Thats my point.

It should be noted that Eddie has been on talking footy in the past in his capacity of Collingwood president. There is likely to be more to it they meets the eye if its true. Always suspected that Hird expressed his Mclaren/umpire feelings to Eddie and Sam before the show and they knew where things were going they went straight at. Channel nine will never be thrilled if James starts talking about the pre show chat one would imagine.

If this nine weight throwing is true it probably reflects badly on James. Contractual obligations aside, he was prepared for a public line to be drawn between the umpires and he but not nine and he.

If anyone should be sueing someone it should be Essendon getting stuck into Hird for signing a secondary contract that makes him unable to satisfactorily perform the responsibilities of the Essendon captaincy.

Fair point. Just hate how the television networks have taken such a stranglehold on footy. A commercial agreement is a commercial agreement. Just doesn't make it right thats all.

What about Hird's Manager? Is it not part of a managers role to get all this sorted in advance. That if Hrd has some clause in his contract that Ch9 can invoke last minute........then it Hird's manager to blame.........not Hird and not 9. This is the exact sort of thing that managers get their cut for..............their not just there for wage negotiations.

It's no wonder that players at now looking at getting a seperate Media Manager as well as having their own Player Managers and their Clubs Media Manager.

If a contract is signed that allows ch9 to veto a ch7 appearance, it isn't Hird's fault, it isn't Essendon's fault............it's the player manager's fault by most reckoning?

One thing this thread demonstrates is how much closer we are becoming to the US in terms of litigation.

I agree - this is just stupid. He should be able to appear on other channels in his capacity as a footballer.

Still, Talking Footy is a crap show so maybe this will convince Ch 7 to take it off the air!!

The only thing like is Price's media review. At least they've got rid of the Hunt/Brown rubbish.

Danny Frawley seems a decent bloke, but jeez he can talk in cliches and mixed metaphors!!
